building fortress

Salvete Omnes,

That is Latin for hiya all.   What do  you guys do with those spear throwers?  What is the first critter to shoot for in fortress?
I am just looking for ideas I guess on how to get to money makers the fastest.

Upgraded bear riders especially if you have rune of charge.  Paw strike is pretty good against shooters.

With the spear guys you want to split them to cripple flyers and fast walkers.

Does this help at all?

Getting ammo cart soon can be important..

So does upgrading defenders to sheildguards early on especially if playing ingvar , Those little guys alone can do very much fighting..

Most of the things can be crept with shieldguards with good use of shieldwall and the bears can take care of good slow hitters/shooters - spear throwers are just support for the crippling. With these you can survive for the first 2 weeks though luck does play a role. An extra enemy morale or a failed paw strike can turn things around when facing multiple stacks.

That's why I try to get soldier's luck... or start with karli, he already has it. Crippling and paw strike are great, and if you're afraid paw strike may not trigger you can steal retaliation first. Once I have enough bears I may split them to get more paw strikes, I usually split the skirmishers too to get more cripple shots. Haste is also great to get them trigger more often of course.
Might be all known I have played just a few games with them so I'm not an expert either...and naturally runes are great if you have them

Somehow many of my fortress games failed because of desync/empty bar error

Ahh Thank You Guys,

I do get the ammo cart right away, but I am having trouble overcoming my fear of splitting troops.  I will try that though with those spear guys but it is only the upgraded ones that shoot to cripple right?

No, the Spearwielders also could. The difference is the Skirmishers have no melee penalty. In a short game I normally won't upgrade them, money could be spent somewhere else. Just protect them with enough Shieldguards then you won't really need the "no melee penalty" ability.

Ahh, well thank you for replying Duncan.  Though I am an old player this is really my first time at being active on the boards.  I appreciate that you responded.
