I always took Jezebel when I had the chance in HOMM II. Ah, my sweet, sweet snow of babylon.
Of course, this is from a guy who will quite happily play halfling fighters in D&D and once used a half-orc bard, so min-maxing has never been a strong point of mine.

Well.... I keep trying to matchmake my heroes 4 heros. during elwin and Shahira, I just got him a new girlfriend...lol

I've decided for me, it depends on the game... But many times I find myself choosing vanity over efficiency when I can.
I say this primarily focused on looks VS stats.

the way I would start this thread today.. (more comprehensible)
I've sometime's found myself to like certain character's because of their story, or appearance.
I rarely like a character w/a boring appearance, unless he has outstanding statistic's. I usualy favoritize a character like Gelu, and put alot of focus on "his/her" stat's, item's, and army strength, before other characters.
Do you look at stat's, or personality with your character's?
IE: Would you pick someone who is cool but slow in conditioning, or would you pick someone bland who is quicker/better in conditioning?

I always go on personality  But try to find one that is a blend of the too - that is, not a complete loser in the stats, but still sexy.
Ashrah's avi is my fav in H5 {not that I play it often}, and she comes with a unicorn too 
{or in the limited games I played}
The stats aren't that much different to make it esential to go for bland, lack of personality types
