Two months of work down the trash bin...
This is unbelievable...
When I try to save the trailer with Movie Maker, it doesn't want to work. My used RAM goes up to 2 GB+. The thing is, all the video scenes I want to put together are uncompressed and are 12 GB. I don't know what stupid algorithm it uses but I fear I don't have enough RAM (I have 2 GB + a 4 GB pagefile), because I tried to delete more than half of the scenes and it worked (obviously that was a test). Why the hell does it need to load the whole scenes to memory at once?
Does somebody please know of a program or something that can create 'virtual' ram from the hard disk space? I don't care if it will be much more slow since I need it only to save this trailer. I'm thinking that if I'll give 12 GB of RAM to my PC (virtual obviously) I'll be able to save the trailer. If there's no such program I worked two months in vain
But this is typical for my life, it was kinda too great to finish the trailer, I was really wondering what happened with my unluckiness...
I so hate my life at this moment, I don't even think I'll be able to sleep well this night...

That's bad Ashie but why uncompressed data, thats no no.
Not sure what trailer are you talking about but anyway you should perhaps use different program than movie maker, Camtasia Studio is quite similiar easy to use and better (not free tough), should open unfinished projects and most video codecs.
... Or you could just make short clips if that works and later put them together after the clips are compressed of course. It's pretty late so it's possible this didn't help you at all but atleast i tried

Movie Maker is really quite poor to many other similar programs out there. I usually use a program called Magix Music Maker 2005 for the videos that I sometimes make. It is supposed to be a music maker but you can also create movies on it as well, and it usually works quite well.

Obviously just temporary, I didn't want to compress it to not lower the quality since it will be compressed again after I save the movie.
I just don't know why it has to load up the entire movie before starting to save it. Can't it just load up the first few scenes, write them, then as it goes further away load some more scenes while discarding the old ones?
And unfortunately using another program will be a pain at this moment, I have around 80 clips which need to be 'split', organized, and on top of that I'll have to add the fading effects, etc as well, again. And the hardest part will be to synchronize it again perfectly with the music.

do you have windows vista because i thought it automatically created virtual memory from your hard drive when you needed it. as far as movie making programs go, i hate to say it because i'm a mac person, but i love sony vegas. you can't get the pro version in america because it can be used rip dvds but a friend of mine got it for me. if you're really into making movies on the computer i would really suggest that program.

Yes it automatically uses Hard Disk, but I did some research and apparently an application can't use more than 2 GB of memory under a 32-bit XP. There's a special trick to increase this limit to 3 GB, but I don't know if that'll be enough either.
Does anyone know of a program or something that surpasses this limit and allows an application to use unlimited memory? Provided of course you have sufficient Hard Disk space (I do)

true, Sony Vegas is one of the best there is. I even tried making movies on it, but due to lack of time I used it to rip of soundtracks from games/movies

Asheera,
I have tried to send a message to you on youtube. I saw your movies, subscribed, and sent you a friend invite. I have been making movies for some time now.
Your problem with data compression is most likely due to the fact that you are not using the "import" button in Windows Moviemaker. Windows Moviemaker is the easiest and simplest way to make a movie and upload it to the internet. One of the things Windows Moviemaker does for you is: it automatically compresses the data for you when you import a picture or recorded clip from another location on your computer. Once you "import" the file to WMM then go through do all the other stuff you want with it. Then when you are done with your movie project click the "save to my computer" button. When you do this WMM will render the project in the format you choose. Most projects are saved as a .wmv format.
If you want something with a lot more power and versatility I can help you get the Sony Vegas Pro 8.0. But that program requires a great deal more patience as rendering your movies and uploading them can take as long as 16 hours while WMM only takes as long as an hour or two. The quality and special effects are much higher for Sony Vegas Pro 8.0 and worth it in my opinion.
My computer is 2.39 ghz and has 512 megs of RAM
I use my real name for my youtube name: JakeBatchelor
Edit: Asheera if you have ventrilo or teamspeak I can simply walk you through it by telling you. It's much faster that way.

Yes I've received your messages and friend invites.
But the problem is when I try to render the movie, it gives me an error. I'm sure it is the fact that it uses more than 2 GB RAM (and an application is not allowed to do so in XP 32-bit) because if I cut half of the movie it works (and uses less than 2 GB memory - I've seen with Task Manager)
I don't know if I'll try Sony Vegas in the future, I'm not that much into making 'professional' movies. For now I just want to finish this one.

Good luck then...sounds like you arent going to listen to me.
You keep talking about gigs of ram. Last I checked a gig was bigger than a meg.
My computer only has 512 megs so if my computer can do it then yours should make it a cakewalk.

It depends on the video sources. Mine are 12 GB because they are uncompressed. If I cut half of the video scenes, it works, if I cut less than half it won't work, because I think it has to load up all the scenes in memory first before saving the movie, which is a silly algorithm in my opinion.

10 Easy Steps
1. I record something with fraps
2. the footage gets saved in a folder
3. I open Windows Moviemaker and click "import video"
4. I find the folder with the footage and click on it
5. I then drag the new clip brought into the Wndows Moviemaker timeline
6. I click "import audio"
7. I find the folder with music I want and click on it
8. I drag the music brought into WMM down to the timeline
9. Click "done"
10. Click "save to my computer" (which also compresses the data)
Ten easy steps. It doesnt get any easier than that. Upload time to youtube is about 30 mintes to an hour. (that is blazing fast)
Edit:
Aculias I have become a much less forgiving person after being stabbed in the back by people I thought I could trust. Now I can't trust anyone on the internet. I'm very paranoid nowadays.
