Funny??? Analogies
I read in one thread (don't remember which), where one of the european guys mentioned an analogy from his language translated to english (something about dying = shooting the cannon, or something).
I find lingustic idioms and distinctive characteristics quite interesting, and would love to hear some other analogies (both of english origin and other languages translated to english)
So to get things started, I'll give you a few from my language:
To die - to hang up (how's your grandpa doing? He hung up.)
To throw up - to call for the elk
To get the worst out of a situation - being left with the beard in the mailbox

(no jokes, btw  )

Sure, I'm norwegian, and that "biting the grass" is in use here as well, if in a milder sense. We use it when someone loses in something, like "Borussia Dortmund had to bite the grass in tuesday's match against Liverpool".

Ah, I see... like "Stavanger has been biting the grass agaisnt Hertha BSC Berlin" ? (not that I'm a fan of Borussia or Hertha )

There always has to be a slang term for dying in every culture.
Kick the bucket? Heard of that one before?
We also have slang terms for people's houses. We call them joints.
Getting angry is also called throwing a wobbly.
To smoke is called having a spliff
So a simple ocker term from some of the guys I know goes something like this:
G'day maaate! Ya wanna go back ta Robbo's joint 'afore he kicks the bucket and throws a wobbly 'n' have a spliff wiff 'im?

Thank you, DonGio, I really haven't hoped of such an advertisement that you made to me! Because the "European guy" am I and it was in my thread "Mystery"... Actually it wasn't "shoot the cannon" but "throw the cannon". This is in Bulgarian. For other Bulgarian phrases you'll have to wait. Either I will decide to remind myself some or Milena will decide to post here... I think she can give you more than me.
