WIth the soon-to-be released HoMM4, you will soon see Heroes 3 on budget title everywhere. I just came across HoMM 1 2 and 3 in a compendium box the other day for $25A dollars ($12.50US).

Heroes Complete
If you want Heroes III with AB and SOD (incl.latest patches), Heroes Complete might be your choice.
I bought it recently for around 50$ US and I must say I'm a little disappointed - cheap box, no artwork, manuals on CD - I wouldn't call that a "Collector's Edition".. LOL
But it definitely is worth its money - and I also guess it will be much cheaper as soon as HoMM4 will be out

I think HoMM(all versions) should be legal to download.
Then some people who don`t have enough will able to download it and they will be happy.
Unfortunately, autors can`t do that.

Should it be legal?
lol this isnt an opinion type decision, Kings Bounty isnt "legal" if your definition of this is free to d/l. One can always find "cracks" of popular games to d/l.
I prefer to buy the game myself to support the development of more games like the one i support with my money "Thank you Zud for HMM4" lol
If you do a search on the internet, I am positive you could find several outlets to "buy" this game, So I think ther the "I can't find it" is kinda lame, but the "I'm not willing to spend $XX for this game so I get it from my local hacker/cracker" is not much better IMHO, (well to each their own, but dont blame me when the company folds and doesnt produce the next installment of a game) I just figure the price of heros is very small to me If I compute the hours of enjoyment / purchase price.

That is very true.
HoMM3 is relatively new game and I think it shouldn't be made to download for free...
However games that are older than five years should get some kind of abandonware status unless they are possible to get example through Internet with reasonable cost. I find myself supporting those who are giving those older games free in their netsites because I think it's robbery to sold old game with high prices. Whether it is "classic" or not.

...do you realize how little that each individual programmer and designer gets paid for all their hard work, as it it?? ...it is quite pitiful, in my opinion, for what they have to show for all their commitment...it is already much too simple to obtain any single program for free, illegally as it is...what would happen if everything suddenly became legal? That would ruin the game industry? I don't think that anyone would like to see that happen...the reason people make games as a living, isn't just because it's "fun" and they're doing it out of the goodness of their hearts...they're trying to make money, and leave as good a life as they can...people who do the work should get paid for it...that is the way the world turns...and if it turned any other way, I believe that it would crash into the sun

underpaid programmers
Programmers and designers get only a tiny percentage of the revenues. Most of the money are either wasted(not invested in game development) or go to the business elite. As for the rest, you are right.

Once again..
Heroes3 complete come's up.
I got that one a year ago, (in the state's) for 20 buck's.
I can get it here for 20 buck's too.
Same w/the heroes 1, 2 & 3 set..
I got that, gave away three, and played with 1 & 2.
It's funny how I looooved 2, even more than 3.. Because when I bought 3 (looking for 2 mind you)I cannot stand 1 or 2 anymore. They're just.. blegh to me
The music in two was good tho'.

Programmer's underpaid?
I'm sure they get some kind of kick out of *Creating* these game's, and I wouldn't be so sure about them living any less than comfortably.
If you have heroes3 complete, check out what the designer say's in the first few page's. He talk's about loving what he's doing, and how it's alway's been a dream!
(I relate to that)
HoMM3 free?!?! nah, it's worth more than what I paid for it.
It's a seemingly never-ending game to me.
Unlike other game's, heroes is still fun after a splurge of a new game (bauldur's for instance).
You can't really pick up mny RPGs after not playing it for a month, and be as happy as you were when you played it for the first week!

I would have preferred that he showed his love by convincing his publisher to put a printed manual and some goodies into the box

I don't want to be rude, these are really dumb questions.
Anyway, Heroes III Complete is like $20-$30 US, and that has Heroes 3, and both expansions. It's not that much. Maybe it's hard to find in some countries, but NWC still deserves money for their work.
If it wasn't so huge, a download (that you pay for) might be a good idea to help people who can't find it in stores, but it's too big for most people to download anyway.
Ok, the Pros and cons of making it a free download.
Pros:
A bunch of kids get to play a game for free
Cons:
New World Computing makes no money and goes out of business
There is never another game set in the Might and Magic universe. Ever.
People get used to the idea of getting high-quality games for free and stop buying games from other companies.
Other game companies then go out of business.
The game industry dies, because it is apparent that nobody feels that a game is worth spending money on.

You know, my immediate reaction to the title of this thread was "Maybe not ..the dern game is addictive enough to be a controlled substance."
Then I found out people wanted to download it for free. Well, that's something completely different ....Nevvvvermind.
