HOMM 2 On Windows XP

Hi, I need help and there is no topic for this as far as I can see in the forums.

I want to play Heroes of Might and Magic 2 again.  It installs fine, it opens fine, but ALWAYS, after a few moves or so, it freezes and I can't click anything. They only way to stop it at that point is to shut it down from the task manager.  Interestingly, after that point, the music keeps running.

I can play heroes of might and magic 3 no problems, but I really want to relive HOMM 2.  I'd appreciate any help possible.

My system is fully up to date with drivers.

Win XP
7800 AGP card
Creative Audigy 2.0 card
etc...

I have sound acceleration set to off in dxdiag, but that didnt help.  I know there's a patch to get MM7 running from Mok. Wondered if I need a patch for HOMM2 or something else.

Have you tried running Heroes 2 with Compatibility mode turned on?

To turn it on, right click on the .exe and then go to compatibility and then switch it to Windows 95 or Windows 98.

It might work then.

You can also start the game in a different way.
Do not click the H2 symbol on your desktop, but open a DOS prompt. Change to your cd-drive (where the H2 disk is inside) go to your heroes2 folder and then type heroes2w.exe

How to open DOS prompt:

Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories...there u will see it.
When DOS window is open, u type the letter of the cd-drive where your H2 disk is inside followed by a doublepoint ( : ) and press enter.

So if your cd drive is "e", u type this: e: and press enter. You should know see E:\ at the start of the next line.
Now u type: cd heroes2 followed by pressing enter.
You should see E:\heroes2\ in the next line now.
Now u type: heroes2w.exe followed by pressing enter.

Game should start now....
