Poll Question: Races or Themes?
While I have my personal opinion on this matter, I'm curious how the general community thinks about this question:
Would you rather see towns or factions based on races, themes, or something else?
Personally, I think race-based works for Haven, but I firmly believe if you utilize the same system for more factions, you simply get the same types of lineups and creatures, with the only differences being the abilities and the species. You could argue it's always like that, but I personally favour more mystic creatures.
Fortress is, in my opinion, the embodiment of race-based towns gone bad.
So what do YOU think of this? Should (most) towns be race based, theme based, or something else? (if the latter, explain it!)

I like the race system in H5. Human, Necro and Inferno are already good working races imo. Nothing wrong whit Sylvan and Academy either (well i still would kick those blade dancers out of my squad). Dungeon is fine for H5 but in next heroes game i would want to see something different than those ladies, maybe Harpies and Medusas but most importantly Minos higher level! Little changes for Barbs lineup and maybe Dwarfs as some part of race or just hero, no more than 2 Dwarven creature needed imo.
= H5 is good but as i don't wish too see all line ups the same i vote for theme based system

Don't get me wrong, I'm all fine with factions being race-ruled But I just don't believe that means that that same race needs to be occupying more than 2 or 3 slots in the creature lineup.
Sylvan does just fine with woodelves and druids. Academy only has mages. Demons and Undead are a seperate case, really.
Dwarves are crap and only Haven is valid as a race based town. I never liked the dark elf-based dungeon Furies are a cheap replacement for harpies.

You racist! You are a human so it's ok for haven but not for dark elves and dwarves, that's almost a breach to the CoC!! Hater!
Seriously though I rather like both of these as they are. At the same time I would not like to see the same lineup but furies, raiders, bears and thanes are just cool.

Long live Race based towns!!
I like each 'town' to have a base-race that constitutes almost 75%-80% of the race, or even more! There should be some "extra" creatures not part of the base race (like e.g Unicorns and Treants for Sylvan), but the remaining part should be filled only with the base race. In fact, Dwarves are for me the best designed race (which have Dragons as the "extra" unit and Thanes as a "combination" of an extra and a dwarf). Of course I do not like dwarves to be fire-based or have dragons, but that's it. Sylvan would also be OK (in my taste) if it didn't have that Green Dragon (moved treant & unicorn upwards), and had a new elf unit, something like a healer

I don't see why races and themes need to be mutually exclusive. I like the idea of races overall, as it makes the game feel more realistic, although I don't like the Dwarf town for being so filled with Dwarves. If they renamed thane to Giant it would be okay.
But seriously, the races presented as they are makes the game have a bit of unity. I mean, it was hard to find a way of describing a faction in Heroes 3. What do you say after loosing, "Bloody Elves, Dwarves and Centuars!" or "Bloody Rampart Troops!" Neither has the effect you want. But "Bloody Elves!" works quite well.

I vote Race Based (surprise ... or ...) - anyway, I have to agree, though, that obviously a race based town should not have exclusively units of that race - I think H5 works excellent in that regard in that some of the towns have more beasts (Sylvan, Dungeon) and some have less (Haven, Fortress) to give a bit of variation.
Also, there are some towns which do not have a "race" as such - Necropolis, Inferno, Academy - but rather a profession. I think that's fine.
Actually I wrote a rather long-winded essay about this once in the Altar (where this would probably belong), but I will agree that for me, the big no-no are towns that mix humanoids - Heroes 3 Rampart is a prime example of this, mixing of Elves and Dwarves that simply has nothing to do with each other.

Time for a Sith_of_ziost Monologue
Most people disdain the Fortress for having too many dwarves. The they that the beloved theme-based Fortress from Heroes 3() was how the Fortress was supposed to go in Heroes V. But, in all actuality, the Fortress fits better in Ashan by not having it be a loose band of refugee creatures strung togetherby a companionship. Fortress in Heroes was supposed to house the Dwarves that had already been alluded to in the Vanilla Heroes V. So, pon making HoF, the Fortress was purposely overpopulated with dwarves to show that, in fact, they are a huge and powerful confederation. How else would they have helped in wars before? Now, concerning the population itself, the 6 of 7 Dwarves in the Tiers was to make it a completely racial faction. Furthermore, the dwarves did not employ other creatures, like the Unicorn with the Sylvan or the Griffin with Haven. They only had bears, and that's no fun with a creature. Sure, there were possible creatures, like the incomplete Snow Ape among other things, but that would take away from the overall appearance of short, bearded drunkards that are runic geniouses. They were meant to be that racial, with the Fire/Lava/Magma Dragons as Arkath's creature, like Elrath's Angel and Urgash's Devil.
In conclusion, the reason why Dwarves are heavily racial is because that is what they are. Too many players still wish for the traditional Fortress with just a bunch of themed creatures. What people must understand is that the Heroes V Fortress is not Heroes III Fortress. they may share the name, but they do not share the theme.

Yes they are
Anyway, like some before me, I don't think that race and theme should be separated. Though it's ok with me if a town consists of a few races, I like the way it is now.

They are huge, mindless, evil, clad in dark, chaotic armor and they serve only the Demon Sovereign... That doesn't leave much space for discussion, does it?
But maybe they are some corrupted spirits of fire, bound to serve the Sovereign. I don't know. Rakshasas also come from some other planes and dimensions. But Devils still have a rather demonic appearance that fits well with other demons.
