Barbarians = unfair
WHY THE snow do they get more health and damage per level?
Because thay cannot learn magic in their home town, stronghold. SO snowING WHAT!? They can learn it from other places. And they get more creatures per week don`t they? Its absurd, man! They are far too powerful. I don`t magic will be SO good that it can even be compared to the skills of a barbarian. Yeah, he doesn`t learn magic skills in the start but he learns other skills. And magic is mostly for getting more creatures. But barbarians get more creatures from a castle every day. But a level 10 barbarian is about 3 times better than level 10 whatever-what-hero. Damn... Somebody calm me down...

it's just the way the game is - i reckon NWC are testing extensively to see if things are balanced. Starting from Heroes1 -> 3 the game goes more balanced and balanced - so I expect Heroes4 more balanced than ever

Actually, if I remember correctly, Barbarians won't be offered magic skills at all, but just have to make do with potions, etc. And their creature lineup, while formidable, may not make up for that lack entirely.
Especially the Berserkers ...merrily charging in, no matter if it's a single peasant or a horde of dragons ... hopefully they have a good growth rate, because I have a feeling you'll be replacing them a lot.
And remember, that hero is just one more stack in the army. If he has 2000 hit points, and hits a stack of 2500 peasants, there'll be a little tombstone on the map.

...let's just hope that balance doesn't mean "all XX level heroes are basically the same".. HoMM3 really suffered from this...

I'm not sure if the stronghold will be unbalanced or not. personally, I think the barbarian class will be unable to use magic at all (except for potions) but will have higher hp-stats. I've heard the stronghold will be able to recruit each kind of hero class, and so including those who can cast magic, but they still will have to capture another town with a mageguild in order to cast magic. The same counts for the other towns who will have to capture a stronghold in order to get strong and a lot of creatures.

I think the reason stronghold screenshots took so long to be released is because there are so many things about the stronghold that make it vastly different than the other towns.
It will be tricky to balance pure might against the mixture of might and magic that is present in other towns.

Do you think the Stronghold creatures will be balanced by having special abilities different and maybe less useful or effective than other creatures? So let's take the preserve for example. (I am making this up.. just to set up a theory of how the Stronghold will be balanced)
Sprite- flying, unlimited retaliation
Wolf- double attack
Elf- double ranged attack
White Tiger- first strike
Unicorn- Blinding chance
Griffin- unlimited retaliation
Fairy Dragon- spellcasting (beneficial? offensive?)
Phoenix- fire magic immunity, ultra swift (fastest creature) resurrection ability (?)
So the stronghold could be set up like this:
Beserker- n/a or maybe a "hazard" ability of attacking the nearest enemy creature automatically?
Centaur- n/a
Nomad- n/a
Troll/Harpy whatever- I don't know yet... probably some kind of specialty
Booger Magi- Has to be a magical melee attack, because they have to be a walker... not a ranged attacker because the thunderbird definitely is not a walker. So I think it would be a magical melee attack that maybe automatically casts bloodlust on the boogers when they attack (too powerful?)
Thunderbird- flying, thunder attack perhaps?
Cyclops- shooter... has the "spread" attack
Behemoth- I don't know if they reduce enemy defense anymore.. if so then this will be their specialty
So as you can see, the stronghold does not have as many specialties and abilities as does some of the other towns.. which I think will compensate. For example, Preserve will be probably more expensive per creature, but their creatures will stay alive longer because of their specialties and will be a more efficient fighting army. Because the stronghold creatures have little or no specialties, they will be cheaper to buy, but will not be as "effective" in combat perhaps because they don't have special abilities like double attacks and first strikes. This will be balanced out perhaps with their cost and growth... but maybe this will balance them out so they will not be so powerful.
As you can see... magical heroes have magical creatures... barbaric heroes have barbaric creatures.

well, since each creature will have a special ability, I think that will not be the case.

Might be a good idea to tag a barb along with your party with the other hero. And if you have a stronghold town, perhaps it would be wise to include a casting hero with the barb.

It is a bit unfair. But maybe magic will be very good. You could summon (Preserve - wolfs), do masive damage (asylum), heal (Haven) and raise dead (Necropolis).
