All towns got a native terrain:
Academy: Snow (like Tower)
Haven: Grass (like Castle)
Preserve: Forest (woohoo! new forest terrain!)
Asylum: Swamp (like Fortress)
Necropolis: Volcanic (like Inferno)
Stronghold: Rough (like Stronghold)

I don't like it. Asylum in swamp! Since when are the Hydras attended to like they're the only creature in the town? It's true - Hydras are the only Fortress creature in Asylum, so why are they all of the sudden being catered to? What's more, that means that Black Dragons are becoming swamp Dragons! Aaaaaaaaiiiiiiiii! This can't be happening! Whenever I make a Heroes IV map, Asylum is going underground.
Now that I'm done fuming, I wonder - how do you get an interview set up with someone at New World Computing? I suppose you'd have to have some website or magazine you're doing it for...

well, you can always e-mail Mara.
She's replied to every e-mail I've ever sent her, but I've never asked her for an interview either.
The interview was good. I was a bit surprised to see Asylum in the swamp as well... but...
...well, I suppose after we play the game, we will forget about about the fortress connotations.

Yeah I'm pretty sure rough is about the same as dirt. I think it was in H3.
Don't have too much problem with the asylum liking the swamp, orcs have always been sort of swampy types by tradition and bandits seem to fit in well too. Same thing with medusa. Only the efreet really seems an odd fit in the swamp, but hey this is a chaos town. Not everything has to fit in there.

" Yeah I'm pretty sure rough is about the same as dirt. I think it was in H3. "
well, in h3, there was rough, and there was dirt. rough was pretty much like a wasteland, while dirt was rich soil, and had almost the exact same adventure and decoration (actually had the same as grass plus some others) objects as grass.
they probably have more terrains than towns in h4, so some didnt have a native town.
in fact, im not sure the h3 dirt had a native town either... unless it was necro.

The swamp suits Assylum allright
First of all, hello everybody, my first post.
I think the warlock belongs to the swamp. The town that built the swamp in HOMM2 was the warlock town, adn it had THE feel, with music and everything. I even think that gargoyles and griphons belong there as well, as does the mystic tower of the dragons
That said, the efreet look strange in a swamp...

Battle
Hi!
Is my English really that bad? What does Maranthea mean by saying:
"Far as damage is concerned, there is no difference. When it comes to strategy there is a very large difference. The angels, who have a higher speed and movement can choose to wait until after the archers have done their attack, taking less damage. The dwarves on the other hand will have to move, and if they don't want to take more damage from the archers they would have to forfeit their turn."
What is the very large difference to HOMM3? In battle, my angels can wait until the archers have done their attack, taking less (or no) damage. The dwarves will have to move... I also do not understand the second part of the last sentence - why do the dwarves don't take more damage, if they forfeit their turn?
I think I don't understand how battle works in HOMM4.

It's a pity that the heroes won't change their alignments - the bribe idea was not bad... But maybe they don't want to make the game too complex.

It's not that the bribe idea is too complex, it would be pretty simple. But it might be pretty unbalancing if you could steal your enemies heroes like that. They are going more for a hero always being loyal kind of theme.

native ground...
since it's back, shouldn't the town chage a small area around it to it's native ground? I can't quite picture a necropolis in the middle of a green forest...

I'm really surprised nobody has commented yet on the removal of the 'Fly' and 'Dimension Door' spells, and that 'Town Portal' will apparently be toned down ...

But I still can`t think out why are prisons useful. It woukld be much more effective to kill enemy heroes.

Dajek, why didn't you like Dimension Door, Fly and Town Portal?
They are my favourite spells for using in the adventure map, and can be a real asset when you need them most.
I had a situation where a hero was about to attack my town, and i had nobody near it. I used Town Portal to get there quickly. Previous to that, i used to recruit a new hero from the Tavern, and used all of my castles troops to defend my castle. There was a better way. Oh well. The best thing i can hope for is for Town Portal to be improved so you can Teleport to the town of your choice. I would like that, even though it could be too much of a help to you, and hinderance to your oponent.
The new town terrains surprise me. The Necropolis, since it has merged with the Inferno town, has lost its feeling of being 'undead' at the hands of the player. It has now taken on a more firey feeling, with the introduction of Devil and Cerberus, and assorted buildings which only add to the blazing. I sometimes like to call it the Infernopolis. I'm sure many die-hard Necropolis fans have been disppointed with the change. Asylum's move to the swamp as their native terrain has also startled me. The town is made up of predominantly Deungeon creatures, which were they called the underground home. Although i like the change, it doesn't necessarily mean it is the right one for Heroes of Might and Magic IV. IMO, it is not.
Heroes IV really has been a surprise packet, with a new spell system, heroes in combat, no horses, no army needed, isometric 3D Game view, and larger, more detailed maps.
3DO must have really thought put the changes they undertok, otherwise they could really have messed the game up, or disappointed many fans by not making the right decision. But we don't know that, because the decision they didn't make, could have been the better one.

Um, huh? I thought I could teleport, blegh.
I thought asylym was a bad choice to name the place.. I would expect nothing but mental case's, if it were a different game.
Town portal, and dimension door are helpful, but should be knocked out of every game where it's *too* helpful.
There are time's I've played where they are *nessesary*.

there's nothing wrong, maranthea was talking about damage differences to the attacker and the defender, not difference from homm3.
hmm.. did the inferno creatures go to the necro after their own town was destroyed, or did the necro creatures go to inferno? argh, as far as i understand, it will be quite uncomfortable to start as an asylum now that your first town is probably going to be placed in a swamp.
the cementery in an active volcanic area must be a really peaceful place, r.i.p.
about the efreet in swamp, i guess i have little to say from the point of view of humour.
[rant]remove the 'chaos' from the name of the hydra (cannot recall what's so much about chaos in the hydra anyway?) and move it to preserve (should be at least one free, i.e. replacable, slot there on lev 3 or 4) and devil to asylum, put grim reaper in the necro.. asylum = volcanic, necro = whatever gray-colored plane area.[/rant]

When it comes to removal and weakening of spells. I hope the TP we get is similar the Heroes 2 "Town Gate", which took you to the nearest town, or perhaps you should get a choice of the 2-3 closest towns or any town within X tiles.
I hope they keep a less powerful version of Fly, which would affect only the Hero and not the troops. This would give the Hero the same ability as creatures with Flying.
When it comes to flying and terrain, some terrain should "stop" flyers. For instance mountains could be unpassable so the map-maker has a way of keeping players out of certain areas. Other terrain types could be passable by flyers but not by ground troops.
About Asylum... I believe it's a place for criminals seeking shelter from the outside word, or put in another way a place where there is no law (The word which has synonyms shelter and sanctuary).
For the creatures native terrain being swamp fits at least for the level 4. Hydras are swamp creatures and Black Dragons are native to swamp, jungle and subterranean terrain.
If the Nightmare has inspiration from MtG then swamp is appropriate since the card is black. Efreets are a bit strange though. Most of the lower level creatures looks a bit odd for swamp, but then again why not. Creatures from the other towns are not a better fit for the swamp terrain. I can certainly picture both medusa and orcs in swamp.
Some of the creatures have been brought here because they're opposite to the creatures in the academy. That is, they're brought here because they're chaotic in nature. (Genie vs Efreet, Black Dragon vs Titan)
