Quote: for a final battle that lasts 10 minutes tops
Um, my final battle take at least 45 minutes to and hour. And not to brag, but I am a pretty amazing player. And my computer handles the game with no problem. Final battles take a long time. But I agree that watch opponents move is boring, but I usually have something on my computer desk to do while I wait.

Or you could simply tab-out and do something else on computer while its not your turn.

So the minimized tab actually blinks when it's your turn again (HoMM5)? Hmm, maybe I'll give MP a try...
It would be cool if your opponent could control the creeps whenever you fight them. No more freebie/exploit creeping for anybody!

there is a reason why it lasts a long time
TBS fans are slower than the ritalin popping, mouth foaming, twitching Online FPS players. A hell of a lot more slower! its like comparing BlueBird to a snail with a fridge on its back.

the problem is not being slow... the problem is it consumes too much time.
I mean, I like heroes a lot. But in order to enjoy it properly I have to spend too much time on it.
I think some compromise has to be reached for the next installment of the game in order to shorten the game length of a multiplayer game.

And I was not talking about the length in itself but of the ratio between the satisfaction and length.
Basically, in an average 6 hour game, you spend 3 hours creeping, 3 hours watching your screen while your oponent makes his moves, for a final battle that lasts 10 minutes tops.
And sometimes you can get so badly owned that there is no satisfaction.
Anyway comparing this to a RTS, like Warcraft, or DotA, I think the main difference is you can enjoy all this pretty quickly and still have time to get some sleep. If you make a mistake and you lose, it will cost you only a few minutes of play, and not hours.
My point is, I think heroes should have more RTS elements, and the game time should be drastically improved. Turn based battles are fun, but turn based map-exploring is just killing my sleeping hours and eventually my social life...
Simultaneous turns (even tho it doesnt last long) is a nice improvement over h3.
IN such games, i don't spend a minute just "watching" the screen. When its not your turn, tab out and surf or do some "prepared-for-this-occasion" work (Im doing some seminars for university when i play, i never play if i dont have anything else to do in my opponents turns). So just use your browser... and when your turn comes, the game will blink on your taskbar so you can immediatelly respond. (H3 had nice feature of instantly tabbing-in when your turn comes, but this blinking is not that bad either
does that work?
when i tab out in the wating screen for the opponent the whole game pauses and the opponents turn does nothing until i open it again.
once had the game taped out half an hour waiting for the opponent to finish his turn

So you guys actually don't play Ghost Mode, because you prefer to just tab out during others' turns in Normal Mode (and surf), rather than waste your time messing around with Ghost Mode?

@MLai, yes exactly.
I alt-tab out, and it flashes when it's my turn. For the early part, sim turns the turns come very quickly.
There was a recent post explaining why ghost mode is a failure.

Ghost mode is handy at times, but I prefer to not know exactly where I'm going, because when using ghost mode usually you've uncovered most of the map early so you know where to go. Also after a while ghost mode turns into the same as just waiting because there is simply nothing you can do after possessing and exploring everything.

I can understand where the poster is coming from.
Slow to get going, slow to build up, and you can lose it all with a single misjudgement. It's seriously depressing.
There isn't much in the way of give-and-take: either you crush your opponent, or he steamrollers you. I've never encountered a battle where both sides end up too...broken....to continue.

It's depressing because it's rather realistic. We all know that it's the final battle and eventually a victory that's most satisfying in any game and so for this game in particular getting to that part simply takes too long. Compare it to Warcraft of any RTS for that matter.
That's why I like to play with the best pros here... they play faster and we get to the fun part more quickly...

Oddly enough, fairly often RTSs feel too QUICK. It's a button-pressing contest.
And yet....Civilisation and other games in that series are also 'slow', but it FEELS right-it doesn't irritate me like it does here.
It's odd.

RTS have a component related to the speed of reaction. But it's not the only skill needed to win the game and enjoy the fun. And games like DotA, take around an hour to play and they are entertaining all the way.
I haven't played Civ so I can't really say. What I can say is Heroes should be made faster. At least on the Adventure Map. If not it's doomed to disapear in this faster and faster age.

I rather find it long and satisfying I don't mind comsuming lot of time for game i love. Only bad thing about it is that you need lot of free time to play one game.
Competive gaming is fun and can be fast or it's faster anyway than normal Hotseat games whit your friends. Only what can be rather depressing is when you already know the outcome of the game. Not fun to play againts nooby player or otherwise againts better player, but i like the saying "you can only become better player when playing against one"
If you find games too long there are good alternatives out there, like the ones mentioned before.
