...hmm, I think you've really hit it on the mark with these avatars, Hexa! I'm sure that Val will love them, and most definately pick one...I'm thinking it'll probably be one of the later ones though, lol

HOWEVER................
...........something you might want to know is that sometimes some artists get VERY annoyed when you don't ASK them if you can use their work as an avatar.
I am an artist an I know several artists, so believe me, I know. It is THEIR work and if you have not been given permission, then you technically are in violation of copyright law and they would be within their legal right to sue you... and possibly even the owner of the site hosting the pictures!
Naturally MOST artists, even if annoyed about it, generally don't pursue it... but I'll warn ya, I know some who have! Consider yourselves warned.

I can say that...
If some artist really has problem someone using his picture as avatar...
I can say where that artist is from...it's not nice place at all.
I think artist should be proud if one takes his picture to be used as avatar.
And what comes to copyrights...they are way too mixed up laws already. Someone is getting way too much power that way. Of course it's nice to warn about them...
Next thing is probably that you cannot possible draw picture without getting lawsuit using certain pen to make it.
Geez...
Anyways...

In response to Icedragon...
I'm aware that some artist don't want their 'stuff' to be used in this kind of way. The sites were I got these pictures are all free of charge and will in one way or the other imply that they are free to use.
The authors might even get a good spinoff from more exposure. Next I'll post some pictures .... where people can realy take good headshots of.
These will be foorm a site that also sells them at poster format. So indirectly I'm really helping the artists .... !

Now I'm really impressed Hexa. Can someone please hand him a quality point? The work he's done here is pretty selfless I think! Val, he's just done an incubus on us! LOOOOL!
I don't know what to say really. Except it's about time someone stopped whinging about avatars and went out and found some! Hexa has done your job for you!

PS: Just when I thought I had you sorted out, you go and change my mind again...
PPS: There is no breach of copyright here. The work of other artists is not being downloaded/printed up and re-sold under another name nor is there any profit being gained off this. If anything, it makes you want to go out and buy a few posters! When I buy a house, I want to have a nice dark den where I have pics all over the walls just like Hexa has posted here and I want them lit with nice soft light. It's really atmospheric stuff and very conducive to a good game of Heroes too!

You probably are all thinking that I'm being very picky here for bringing this up but SO MANY of my friends have had their art ripped off it's not funny... so I'm quite sensitive about it.

That's not true. Just because a picture is in a "free of charge" site doesn't even mean it's there with the artist's consent! (S)he may not know it's there and it's just a "fan site", or even a picture ripped off of a fan site, or a rip-off of a rip-off... etc, til it gets to the point that people just take the picture and post it "because it's COOL!". A lot of art I've seen on some "free" sites has been requested OFF the web by the artist just because of shenanigans like this. Before long, the work is SO far beyond the grasp of the artist that a lot of artists just give up on putting their art on the web. If the site is DIRECTLY FROM THE ARTIST and SAYS that they are free for use and distribution, then it's OK. Dee Dreslough (www.dreslough.com) is one such artist who has graciously put her work all into the public forum (relinquishing the copyright), and my (someday) custom avatar for this place is from her work. I don't know of any other artists who are like minded.

How can they do that if you've shrunk the pictures down to such a small size that you can't see their "copyright of ME" insignia? nobody can see it! And style isn't always easily recognizable at that size either, assuming you're familiar with many, MANY different artists' styles.

Ouch. Artists are quite often okay with resizing and sometimes even distributing their work as long as their copyright info is clearly visible... but CUTTING IT OFF (as in getting just the head shot) is a BIG no-no, without permission! Alteration of a work like this is definitely illegal according to copyright law.

You haven't posted the website of this site, so how do we know where it is so we can buy the artists' stuff? If you're really promoting the artists and trying to help sell posters as you say you are, then every one of these avatars NEEDS to come with a link to this site. somehow I doubt you'll do that.
I think it's unfortunate how many people justify this kind of thing on the basis that it "helps" the artist. Through all my friends, I cannot see one bit how any of them have been helped when their work has been used in this (or any other copyright infringing) manner... if anything, it just encourages MORE people to take their art, leaving the artist with nothing... just angry and jaded and wishing they'd never put their art up in the first place, because this is how many of my friends MAKE THEIR LIVING. Stealing pictures is stealing their food and homes, in a sense. Some of my friends do custom avatars for a small fee, and you can HAVE the avatar to use wherever you want, as long as their info is visible.
hey... I know a lot of artists don't care or don't mind. But my point is that SOME of them DO, and I want to speak up for them right now because they ARE upset, but they're too nice, shy, or jaded to say anything and I feel like playing the "mean ole draggy" tonight.  And because some of you here may not be clear on copyright. Ain't trying to jump down anyone's throat.
EDIT: and Shae, "profit" does NOT have to be made from a work for it to be in breach of copyright laws. Just ask all the fans being sued by Anne McCaffrey for their free, web-posted interpretations of her Dragonriders of Pern and fanfic (which I think is definitely overkill on Anne and her lawyer's parts, but that's another story entirely. *grins*) Like I said, I'm just bringing this to light.

Icedragon, I'm an artist too and although I don't make a lot of money off my work, I'm wary enough about copyright laws to keep any originals and just sell copies of the stuff I do.
I don't mind a group of people taking a few pictures of my
artwork and using it for simple avatar useage. These are not the kind of people that rip me off.
Unless Val doesn't like it, then I say Hexa is helping out
He's not making any profit or taking away anything from
the artist. If an artist was so tight as to kick up a fuss about people on a free site discussing things about a game, then I wouldn't
buy their artwork on the basis of them being far too greedy
We do not sell pictures here, we are just putting a little
pic in the corner of our posting boxes for fun.
You will note that none of us had to pay the NWC artists
for their copyright of the pictures they drew for HoMM.

I know you’ve got some valid points there, and I think its nice that you’re ‘sticking up’ for the artists…(yes there’s a but coming)
BUT:
* authors can protect their artwork on the net (to some extend – for instance disabling the save as option of the pic);
* I AM gonna post the links where I got the pics from.. I already posted one which you might have noticed if you’d bothered to read past posts;
* I’ll post the other URL’s soon (when I’m bloody well feeling in the mood and have posted some more pics here first.. OK);
* if however you’re so curious you can’t wait I’ll recommend looking at the properties of the picture (there you have your web address);
* I for one ain’t responsible for the actions of other webmaster – page owners (where they get there material is up to them);
* the picture’s are here for non-commercial reasons (yes I know that’s a bad argument).
And don’t be so ‘downgrading’ on us. I for one know a lot about the copyright law…..OK?
PS: If you really care as much as you are saying I suggest you check all the links and ask the appropriate people where they got the images. If they are illegally obtained I’ll edit my post … how’s that for being fair he?

After some surfing, I found a few sites where U can order stuff from the artists.
Hope everybody is happy now! There are a few sites I haven’t mentioned (the ones I got my material from). Just check out the properties of the pictures and follow the links [sighs].
Taking a trip to those sites might also show you who’s custom avatar is copyrighted heheh
