Heroes 2 is still the best.
I joined this board specifically to give a shout out to this classic and one of my all time favorites, and to talk some trash about Heroes III which I've always thought was a disgrace to the first two games.
IV was cool, the dynamics of the game were totally re-hauled (not just the class structure like in III) and excellent looks. I actually found this one fun to play, where Heroes III drove me to playing civilization. If I bought one of the new games it'd IV, but I don't see the need to buy another Heroes until HOMM2 gets re-released with hi-res/HD graphics(which will obviously never happen).
As for 5, I've never talked to anyone who played them all and said it was one of the best, so I could care less (I know that makes me ignorant but I don't care)

II - The Champ
IV - The King
I - The Innovator
III & V - Who Cares? (And thats rhetorical, obviously some of you do, but WHY?)

H3 a disgrace? Not likely, it was more successful and ushered a new era and many dedicated fans. I know that some still prefer H2 but let's face it, its predecessor was superior in most things. In any case what does it really matter? I enjoyed both and had many many hours of fun in hotseat or single.
H4 on the other hand is almost universally considered the black sheep of the series. Fun? Yes. But it failed on so many things and did not keep true to the spirit of the previous games. But even so it was an interesting experiment that I was glad to see even if it could not win me over.
About H5 it indeed is one of the best if not the best but it's up to personal preference. Not caring is fair enough but borders on close-mindedness, you could give it a shot.
As for who cares the cold facts show a lot of people. Heroes 1 was indeed an innovator but it's not something the vast majority of players would spend much time on. Heroes 4 is also a lot less played/liked than the rest.

I agree II is frequently over looked, it's a good game. But I think the ranking is like this.
Heroes III
Heroes V
Heroes II
Heroes I

I can't decide. I like all HoMM games equally.
H1 had an interesting artistic style and was simple, yet very entertaining.
H2 had probably the best artistic style out of all the games, and was balanced.
H3 sucks. I'm not going to talk about regular H3.
WoG 3.58 is what H3 should have been. It has the most content out of all the games and is very fun.
H4 had HEROES IN COMBAT! And they had troops independent of heroes. I liked it, but it had a horrible art style.
H5 has the best graphics (unfortunately for me), and has good gameplay.
They're all good. Except for non-WoG H3.

I have played HoMM I, III and V, and for me the best is surely V. It innovates on the right direction (except for restricting factions to one hero), and keeps the great HoMM III style. It is just a matter of taste I guess, those games work right for me. But, what does Heroes II have of special when compared to Heroes III?

Well,for me,I have played all the homm games,inculding king's bounty(which was fun btw ).
And the games that I enjoy the most is HoMMV,and people may disagree,but I think HoMMV has the highest strategy of them all,and
I never really liked HoMMIII,but once I got WoG,it became enjoyable as much as HoMMV but I still prefer V better,but WoG is fantastic.
HoMMII was great,simple and very entertaining but let's face it,it still lacks features and I think we all agree that the more features there are,the more game fun there is,long as it keeps the game fun.
HoMMI was just entertaining,but HoMMII is way better and just as simple and fun.
HoMMIV is...very diffrent,I think the reason many people didn't like HOMMIV is because it introduced many new features,but left nothing of the old ones including taking the units updates away  and aswell as taking the balance between factions.
Anyways,these are just my opinions and my ratings would be
1-HoMM V
2- HoMM 3.5(WoG)
3-And the rest are all really the same for me. ^_^

But HOMM2 was the start of it all. Sure HOMM1 was before that, but HOMM2 improved on many things with that game. I think the most of the fans may have actually come from HOMM2 since at that time, the game was very good.

Everything Well except a few things on the skillwheel but as a whole it is a lot better. In any case Vlaad's point stands, times pass, things get old.

Although I haven't played 1 and 2 extensively, I can't split 3, 4 and 5 as to which is better. So maybe if I play more 1 and 2 I'll notice a similar trend with them.

At first I thought homm2 was better than 3, because I was used to 2. I liked the art better, I thought it was easier to play (not nessesarily easier to win) but then after playing Homm 3 for quite some time I couldnt possibly see, what I saw in homm 2.
Maybe you need to play that on campaine with Gelu, or mightymage (dranos was his name mabey?)

Yeah some campaigns were brilliant and challenging. Armageddon's blade was great just as was new beginning and rise of a necromancer - I forget the title of Gelu's mission. In heroes 2 the ones I remember were the mission to save the dwarves, the search for the crown and the final battle that I liked a lot
