XBox... whadday think?

Personally I think it flopped. Like there were not as many people rushing to buy them as I thought would (not as much as PS2) And plus, I think its really sad what they did to Halo... it was going to be so much more than what they made it into. But at any rate, I think Halo is just another victim of commercialization... you want the game to sell, don't break any standards and stay with the same old boring stuff, to make it easily marketable.

I think each X-Box game should be titled DOA...

I would never buy one.

The only reason the damn thing was created is because Microsoft wants developers to all use Direct 3D instead of Open GL.

And for people who don't know, D3D and OGL are the two most commonly used APIs for 3D graphics.

D3D was invented by Microsoft, is owned by Microsoft, and is maintained by Microsoft, and only works on Microsoft systems.

OpenGL is an open standard that is used on GameCube, Unix, Linux, Macintosh, Playstation 2, SGI workstations, some Windows games, etc.

For all practical purposes, they can do the same things.

Microsoft pushes D3D because if developers design games using D3D, it is harder to make a version of those games for other systems because D3D is controlled by Microsoft.

On windows some games use Open GL, and some use Direct 3D.  Tribes 2, any Quake 3 engine game, and Neverwinter Nights all use Open GL. Unreal engine games use D3D unless you're using a voodoo card, and all games published by Microsoft use D3D.

Anyway, aside from my rant here, who would want to own a console that crashes? Ick.  I'd get a gamecube if I had enough time to play games that it would be worth the investment - and if I had a TV.

Somehow I knew you'd say something like that.

Sadly, D3D has more organization and money behind it - plus the mammoth marketshare of Microsoft.

...but if the X-box flops like I hope it will, none of that will matter too much.

the X-box is going to flop...

at least that is what will happen if they continue to treat games like the did Halo... a shame... as for the power behind D3D... don't forget who is behind OpenGL... SG... not to mention my favourite geek, John Carmack... (he may not be "behind" OpenGL but I havent seen any ID game using D3D)

I was looking forward to Halo at one time. Really looking forward to it. So much that I actually felt sick to my stomach the day Microsoft bought Bungie.

And yeah, I believe X-box will flop, not many people seem to really care, and most people make fun of it, but there's a handful of people in every discussion who seem to think it's great.

Hmm... none of them seem to be posting here though.

As for SG - they're actually a struggling company. They gave up development on their own processors, and are looking into using the 64-bit G5 processor in their future workstations. I'm glad to hear that, because, as a mac user, I'm obviously interested in the success of the PowerPC architecture.

With Apple being so in favor of OpenGL, I would imagine they're probably helping SG with funding and/or developers to advance the OGL protocol. I know updates have been more frequent recently, probably because D3D is finally catching up.

John Carmack has been against D3D so far, but he said for his next engine, after the Doom engine is complete, he will look into the possibility of using D3D. Of course, he also said he would look into using Mac OS X as his development platform instead of Windows 2000. So, I guess what he's really saying, is that he's going to evaluate all of the technology that is available at the time and choose the best of everything.  (well, obviously Mac OS X and D3D won't mix...)

I think he'd lean towards Open GL unless D3D somehow became significantly better because OGL is cross-platform which allows it to reach more platforms.

As for what OS he uses - well, Mac OS X is based on the NeXt OS that was created in the Early 90s, and him and Graeme Devine were both big fans of that, so I could see him leaning towards Mac OS X as well. Plus I haven't read an article yet that compares X and 2000 and said 2000 was better. Of course, now it's X or XP... but we don't need to get into that now...

...and I sure ramble on, don't I?

OpenGL extensions are a mess, and doing pixel/vertex shaders through D3D is much more easier. Also D3D is lower level, while OpenGL is more of a geometrical abstraction - well done for architectural or kind of programs.

Also there are already two or three wrappers of OpenGL based on D3D (the opposite is nearly impossible) - so big deal.

And GameCube and PS2 - there is no such thing as D3D or OpenGL (there are some third party OpenGL library - but they sucks big time).

Also D3D to implement takes less space and memory consumption. With D3D and XBOX UMA you can easily control the textures, while with OpenGL they are not in your hands - OpenGL controls them. Also stuff like locking/rendering to texture and such are easier with D3D...

just my 2 cents

(I still love OpenGL - but when comes to realgames - D3D is the best)

Out of curiosity what did they do to Halo? Not being a fan of action games that much I haven't been following it too much, though I always knew it was supposed to be pretty huge when it came out.

Yesterday at work some guy broght his new XBOX and HALO and DOA3... DOA3 was good but HALO..

HALO is just bad - not having a mouse - is a miss for FirstPersonShooters on consoles (I'm glad i don't like many FPS-s). The looks are like in HalfLife or "Alien vs. Predator". The framerate is about 30fps - sometimes going jerky. VoiceOvers are well done - music - not so good.

Don't worry about HALO - Get PS2 and MetalGearSolid2 - that's the game! I've just got it yesterday - it's just probably the best game ever created for Playstation or for consoles. Even replaying it is fun.

What Microsoft did to Halo was horrible I think. What Halo was originally envisioned as was a superior PC/Mac game that would thrive on a multiplayer experience, with players combining to do things like drive vehicles (one person drives, another mans the turret) and it the previews for it looked teriffic.. it was supposed to play as if you were watching a movie. However, Microsoft just turned it into another first-person shooter... much of the innovation was lost when it was bought by Microsoft and further when it was converted to XBox.

Yes, it sucks that halo had to be made to be less than it's original intent, but they had to work within the limitations of a console.  I mean, everyone here will agree with me that a computer isn't as limited in function and purpose as a console, right?

As for the D3D/OGL comments:

D3D is low-level because Microsoft made it a part of the operating system. OpenGL functions the same way on Mac OS X.

As for your other comments, (Pixel Shaders, et) I know those features are available in OpenGL if you're using a card that supports said features, though that is handled by extensions to the OpenGL standard that are created by the video card manufacturers at this time.

I would like to see OpenGL become more organized and focused in the future, but it's obviously going to be a higher level API than D3D on windows, because Microsoft is in control of what goes into Windows.

However, I do not program in OGL or D3D, so I am unqualified to have an opinion from a developer's perspective.  However, many big games are using Open GL, so obviously their developers have some reasons for choosing it over D3D.  And like I said, If you're not using Windows, you're using Open GL.

Well part of the reason why Halo may have moved away from the whole ultimate multiplayer experience is because that market may have become more saturated since the game was originaly released. There have been an alot of team games like that with turrets and the like lately.

Moving it from a PC game to a console game though, that seems quite disapointing. Certainly consoles will never be PCs. Still I'm reluctant to criticize them without knowing the details. Often a game that looks great originaly will turn out to be horrible with further programming and developing. Some of you may remember Battlecruiser or Daikatana. So who knows was MS had to work with when they got the game.

I think the most important thing is not what it was hyped to be, but what it is now that it's available.

Is it fun to play, or is it "just another FPS"?

That will be what makes or breaks it.

Also Internet for XBOX is coming Spring 2002 - currently only LAN is available - so multiplayer is probably skipped.

It's just bad that best popular PC genres - like Real-TIME STRATEGY and FirstPersonShoooters require MOUSE and more keyboard commands + text_console sometimes - which is not found on regular console. The only other popular PC genres that may succeed are sports and RPG games (Diablo 2 for example).

As for moving HALO from PC/Mac -> XBOX - well it's known that CONSOLE sales are 10 times larger than PC ones (well maybe not quite right - but it's about it).

For example in Quake's best days it solds in one-two million - while Metal Gear Solid 2 - has currently 1 million PREORDERED!
