Finished Macross Frontier. Not that great, IMO. Started off as sort of a poor man's Gundam Seed, then a fairly boring slice of life, and the ending didn't resolve the love triangle. The songs were meh, too, and some of them were overused. None of the characters were particularly likable. The mecha designs were unimpressive. 7/10.
____________ Eccentric Opinion
Unimpressive mecha designs? Huh. That's funny cuz I find almost all other mecha designs inferior to Macross' valkyries. They're stylish as ****.
I agree about the love triangle, though I think it's fairly obvious who Alto chose anyway. Alto does a salute to one of the girls in the final episode, which is a reference to the original Macross, implying his choice.
I plain disagree about the music. The only one I don't really like is the GODDAMN My Boyfriend Is A Pilot tune that was so overused in SDF Macross that it makes me cringe just thinking about it... god it's so annoying. Kill with fire.
The main theme of Macross imo, is how culture and love can persist in times of war, and eventually even defeat warfare itself. Frontier takes this to the next step, with culture being perverted and used as a weapon, causing a great war that could easily have been avoided. (SPOILER: Seen with Grace rewriting the lyrics to Aimo, which is a love song, into a patriotic war tune)
That's kinda deep though, for me the series is more about mecha beating the **** out of each other synched with J-pop.
Well anyway the anime relies heavily on nostalgia, the whole anime is basically a tribute to the original SDF Macross, celebrating the 25th anniversary.
If you haven't seen the previous series then I imagine the experience becomes a bit lackluster. Though it would of course be better if the anime could stand on its own feet without relying on nostalgia, I believe that is the reality of it. Many of its smaller annoyances are in fact just tributes.
____________
As for the music, most of it was bearable, but nothing stood out as good.
My main problem is how annoying the characters were. Alto was indecisive, Ranka had no self-confidence (and later, no will of her own), Sheryl was a spoiled brat until she got Space AIDS, Michel flirted with nearly every unnamed female character, Klan was a generic tsundere, etc.
Nothing compared to superior characters such as in Gundam Seed or Code Geass.
____________ Eccentric Opinion
Gundams tend to look like they're built out of LEGO for me, but they have their highlights as well
Valkyries also have an ultra sexy almost plausible fighter -> robot transformation system. It's sleek as ****, Gundam has nothing on it. NOTHING!
You evil you Of course you had to pick a Valkyrie in GERWALK mode, the most awkward looking mode (yet I find it sexy as well because of its maneuverability)
Better.
I simply don't agree about the characters either. It's generic but it works, Frontier uses these stereotypes well.

That mech is overcompensating.

The giant has awakened
You drink my blood and drown
Wrath and raving I will not stop
You'll never take me down
Man so far the second season is even better than the first. Nice plottwists.
One of this series' greatest pleasures is watching a radar filled with units all go LOST at the same time, followed by Lelouch's manic laughter
____________
Now that's the kind of anime I like. Mecha can rot as long as there are shows like Cromartie High.

If you ask like that, how can I not reveal it?
I have been exposed to too many gundam motivationals.

Wow, in the end I have no complaints. This was a perfect anime.
Second season was dimensions better than the first one, and I thought that one was awesome as well.
So many jaw-dropping moments that my face is hurting. Insane.
The mecha designs and fights improved substantially as well.
@Mvass: That episode was like "Wow, everything is ****ed. What happens now?"
The later episodes all felt like the story could end at any moment, and then they just introduced yet another plot-twist and got me completely hooked again. It never let me go even for a moment.
This one goes in the imaginary hall of fame in mah head.

I disagree. The second season had Rolo, Ohgi being an idiot, and introduced a bunch of new characters without doing much with most of them (e.g. Gino, Bismark, and Xingke).
____________ Eccentric Opinion
Well yeah you like gay gundams, your opinion is invalid.
But maybe I will discuss anyway!
* * * YOU ARE NOW ENTERING THE POTENTIAL SPOILER ZONE * * *
I really sympathized with Rolo for some reason. I liked him.
Xing-Ke was pretty cool, but his fricking disease never seemed to have any real impact whatsoever. Yeah he coughs blood at sporadic intervals, but it never really seems to hinder him or anything... I thought he'd at least die dramatically, like "Uhhh... Tianzi-sama... uhh you got to see the world after all uhhh... our promise" *dies while coughing blood* or something.
Bismark... the Knight of One huh? Yeah you'd figure they'd have made a bigger show outta him, ultimately he didn't really matter that much. Honestly I had to google Bismark to remember who he was. His appearance didn't really diminish the quality of the show in any way though.

I still consider the anime flawlessly executed.

^I've heard that's worth watching.
I've been watching Hourou Musuko, if you want something completely different, I recommend. It's a nice little series.
