It depends
on the level of difficulty you play. On expert and Impossible I go for Capitol while on lower levels- for the creatures. If the map is rich with resources, I'd go for creatures. The problem is I just love money a way too much.

day7. castle
Dungeon build
day1. guild

I can never get Dragons first week on Dungeon. Not unless I'm playing on super super easy with Harpy Loft already built. I need too much sulphur to get a dragon cave. 2 sulphur for guild, 3 for manticores and 20 for cave. That's not impossible to get first week, but it's very difficult most times. And considering that a lot of time is wasted on chests and finding gems for the minotaur labyrinth (2 gems for guild, 10 for labyrinth)
You need some 30,500 gold bits just to get dragon cave. Most players hire three heroes to begin with which takes 7500k away from a normal 100% difficulty starting gold of 20k. Boom, down to 13,500k.
Now go out and find 16,500 bits of gold so that you can come up with the balance. No, count in the effect of the village hall (500 per day) and that's 13,000 gold you gotta get your hands on. Plus at least 2 gems and somewhere in the vicinity of 15 bits of sulphur.
All in all it may seem easy to do on paper, but I think it's near impossible to get dragons on first week with dungeon. Not without some days of saving and not building. In which case, you'll have them built Day 1 of Week 2 at the very earliest...
Either that or you're getting pretty lucky...

Shae, I guess you aren't talking about ToH maps, are you? Cause on nearly every ToH map you will find a trading post which should help you in getting the necessary sulphur / gold.
Without trading post, it is hard to do, I agree (marketplace in 2nd town is usually too expensive)

Not that I play many ToH maps of course. I'm talking about randoms and non-toh maps.

This MOney & Troops business
Quote: Which is why You will notice Shae, I said "except on random maps"
LoL, yep, on ToH maps u can almost always buid dragon cave and Shae is right also because on random maps it really, really hard to get Dragon Cave . But sometimes on toh maps I like to leave the dragons alone and go for Castle .
Quote:
I think building Capitol straight away is madness, unless on 160% or higher. Even on pathetic maps, I still find it's better to have an army to fight with than no army at all. Hell do I care if I have no gold, I'll just STEAL IT FROM YOU!!
Ok I'll give u an example : I started a random map with Wiggy(and we didn't finish it yet ), I got fortress he got Castle. First, I started building for troops but then I saw that I had no way out of there except fighting a pack or lots of 6th level creatures.
So I started building for Capitol, what, is that silly?
LOL, I'd like to see u Shae on that map with your building troops strategy, you would get your BEHIND really kicked, lol, I'm probably getting mine anyway .

Thank you
having your creatures is fine but you have to have MONEY to buy them, don't forget. No money, no creatures. No creatures, no victories! No victories, no cities, no cities, no money, no creatures! LoL

Quote: it's not really a matter of who has the most money wins in HoMM, it's a matter of who has the biggest army. And the sooner you build that army, the greater your chances are of defeating your opponent. If it takes you too long to build, then an enemy with a stronger army will come right in and take your town fairly easily, castle or not.
This generally seems to be correct, however, I have found a counter-example:
Hit & runners don't really need creatures, they need money. All Solmyr needs is one dragon fly, and 2620 gold.
By the way, please show some respect for others who hold a differing strategy.

Im one for building the infrastructure before the creatures. Get some cash and some castle defence and then build creatures, I also tend to get at least the first level of each creature before i build the upgrade, something is usually better than nothing.
But a lot of the maps i have been playing recently are really rich in gold, which has helped a lot and means that i can build creatures first and then worry about castle defence later.
Though building a citidel and a castle does increase the amount of creatures produced as well!

Me as well! But this is because I usually play Expert. Now, if the map is rich in money, I'd build the creatures. But this rarely happens.

Thanks again to all, but for me, it's a matter of playing the comp. I have a pay-per-minute connection (not for much longer though, so who knows, maybe you ToH'ers out there will get a chance to open a can of whoopass (yeah, I know it's a lame expression) on a rookie soon!), so I can't afford playing games over the internet. But by all means, don't stop talking strategy in ToH games, I'd just appreciate it if you would specify if it was TOH strategy or single player strategy.

I alway's, alway's alway's build the accessibility first.
That is the soul way to achieve strength.
Granite, you'll be low on *resource*.. You will get that back w/a garison full.
How many time's do you start a senario, where a little bit of strength wont get you mine's, or resource's?

as for upgraded structures concerned:
- I usually build upg. gremlins day 1 or 2 ... just so i have 100 m.gremlins reeking havok.
- upg. pit lords i usually build week2, day2 ... (first 7 days build as many structures as possible, week2 day 1 build mage guild lvl2) why b4 capitol? to convert all my unused or useless troops into demons ... and eventually get over 100 demons week 4 (done it 3x so far ).
- upg. medusas, harpy hags, crusaders, marksmen, lizard warriors, T-birds, ogre magi, efreet sultans, cerebi, naga queens, g.elves, s.pegasi, upg centaurs, vampire lords ... I recommend upgrading week 2 / week 3 depending on how much u need them.
- if i have Shakti on a random, it may be smart to go with infernal trogs early week 1.

hehehehehe
I tell you on 160% random maps.. I will go for a city hall in first week MAYBE 1-15 games.. if I see an extremely poor map.
In a 200% hmmm maybe I know long before I played online in the me vs the comp days I would go for city right away.. and I always played 200%. Havn't done that much vs an expereinced player.
I tell ya one thing though if I am playing a random map and I am still building creature dwellings into week 3 LMAO.. I am losing that game about mid week 4.
but to each his own I suppose. at 160% I can normally get level 6's and castle out with a town hall.. (of course depending on the prebuild) and on stronghold and fortress level 7's are not much harder

Worst strategy, you can get much more resources by fighting. Getting an army is top priority.

Then change, my advide is to try it in a Jebus XL map on SoD or any HotA above XL. You will experience first hand how much more territory you are able to explore and how these small battles will provide you with all you need to continue building and fighting for the entire week. Another tip; buy as many heroes as you can as soon as you can, the two guys with army are just enouch for first day, when you have eight heroes week one your exploration ratio is basicly twice AI's one.
