Sarcasm
I have recently seen people who seem rather oblivious to some finer aspects of sarcasm, such as a blatantly obvious use of it in an extremely fitting situation. Confusion usually follows, and that often leads to a person disagreeing with another person with the same opinion.
In these situations, the person who used sarcasm usually turns out as the negative one, the cynical individual who is responsible for the entire misunderstanding by using his dark schemes to bring chaos into a discussion whenever he opens his vile mouth. People look at a sarcastic person and usually think, "Why won't this bastard just stop being so ironic all the time and simply lead a normal conversation?".
This saddens me greatly.
I am also feeling downright sad when people mix up sarcasm, skepticism, cynicism and other stuff that end with "ism" (like prism, Confucianism or the Great Schism). They are far from same, and their uses are varied and colourful.
It also saddens me when republicans win the elections or I see an emo in the street.
But let us not stray too far from the subject, our main theme right now is sarcasm.
See, sarcasm is not a bad thing. Far from that. It is not a negative trait, a sin, something unnatural or impolite. On the contrary, sarcasm is a wondrous thing; a powerful weapon and yet such a relaxing sport. Much like fire, it can be a perfect friend, and yet a deadly enemy.
Allow me to elaborate.
Sarcasm can be regarded as an ancient spirit that is impossible to tame, hard to master, and yet so rewarding to befriend. Sarcasm is an ideal, a gateway to the better future of intelligent communication where men would fight by verbally outwitting their enemies instead of hitting/shooting/poisoning/raping/bombing/throwing in a pit with hungry jaguars/zapping/stabbing/tossing those small, sharp ninja thingies at each other.
It is an art of calculated cleverness, a perfect IQ test in the huge job application form that is life. It is a spiritual skill of channeling raw wit through your body and using your brain to forge it into mighty spears of thought with which to find the right answers and show them to the people (and stab the unbelievers from time to time). It is the ability to write miles long posts of utter bullcrap on internet forums and making people go "wow, I don't get what he was trying to say at all, so he must be right".
That said, this is not one of those "Join our cult, give us $250 and live forever" pamphlets (this doesn't mean you can't send me 250 bucks if you want, of course). This is just my small contribution to the sarcastic individuals out there, brave smart men who fight for their survival in the cruel and unforgiving ocean of stupidity that surrounds all of us.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling people who don't understand sarcasm dumb. There are perfectly smart people who just haven't been introduced to sarcasm in the right way. Thus we should enlighten them and teach them the truth. The time for a change is nigh. Idiotocracy, the rule of the morons, draws to its conclusion - we can either try to save humanity or wait until idiots from all over the world finally start sending nukes at each other.
But whatever happens, sarcasm will always remain as pure and beautiful as it always was. A perfect science and majestic art in its own right. Spread the word, my friends. Teach people of the wonders of sarcasm, and do not let fear or greed stand in your way and stop you from using it at times. Never kneel to senseless authority of dumb people just because they're bigger; instead, lay them low with sarcasm in a way that they don't even understand.
Leave now, and bear in mind what I've told you. Do not misuse sarcasm as there is no honor in that - use it to protect the weak and defeat the dumb and mighty. Thank you.

Impressive. That's one thread I enjoyed reading and I'll have you know that I am of the same mind. It's been some time now that my best friend considers sarcasm as a conduit to the plane of negativity and I'm sad for two reasons:
One is that she cannot appreciate it and instead considers it a way to release your inner poison which is hardly what I have in mind everytime I do it.
Secondly that because of her past interactions she is always wary of sarcastic people. I guess she has grown up in a place where almost everyone digs the other's hole and verbally backstabs others when they are not around which has not worked well with her trust issues.
In a way I do understand her - besides if someone keeps that up nonstop he will become tiresome and annoying - but at the same time wish she would become more open to the idea that it's not a negative trait by its own.

It's not so much a political as a moral view but never mind.
Quote: Well that is just racism!
Nonono.
When you say you don't like black people, that's racism.
When you say you don't like emos, that's just common sense.
Quote: Emos are people too, they have all the rights just as you!
You forgot to add "unfortunately".
Elvin, I know that a troubled past with backstabbing arseholes can be a great factor in disliking sarcasm and viewing it as a sort of dishonesty, and I fully understand your friend. But on the other hand, try to explain her that sarcasm has nothing to do with saying things about someone behind their backs. It's saying things about someone in their face, and doing so in a fashionable and gentlemanly way And that's just one of the many uses of it.

Is there a form I can sign or something?
Although, to the defense of the dumb I have to say that recognizing sarcasm on internet forums can be a problem. You don't hear the tone on which it's being said, and if you don't the person it can be difficult to understand whether his being sarcastic or just plain idiotic. *cough*NERFDUNGEON*cough*
That is why I vote for introducing a new smiley to HC! The special sarcasm smiley! Still no idea how it will look though...

Damn, and I thought one person with a mind like Baklava was enough, now I have found out that you are similar to him?!?!
Seriously though, I like this thread. However, on the internet, Sarcasm can sometimes be hard to express. I guess it is easier in Real Life because of the body actions that we do and the way we say things.

Closest to a sarcastic smiley I have seen is this: The internet does need that extra little hint that you are not serious unless you know the person a bit. Not necessarily a smiley but something as exaggeration, wording etc. Unfortunately some cases as nerf dungeon() are hard to tell so it's up to people's interpretation. If nothing else I consider such cases a bad attempt at sarcasm.
That said in the specific case it could be just for his own amusement and not for others to see through the sarcasm.

Sometimes if I am being sarcastic, then I might put a "" smilie at the end of my post.
Usually with msn Video Conversations it is easy to tell when someone is being sarcastic, but with forums, there should be some smilies to express that you are being sarcastic. Or the poster could just put a note at the end of his post saying the post was sarcastic or whatever.

I use sometimes too, but ti has too many different uses to be identified as sarcasm.
I've seen this trick used several times:
**************
**************
[/sarcasm]
That sort of works, I guess, but it's just so much to type.

Sarcasm of course comes in varying levels.
Generally it shows a extreme lack of caution to be sarcastic in situations where you dont know how someone else will react.
Of course, bad sarcasam is far far far more idiotic then bad conversation. Likewise sarcasm used properly can be intellegent. Even then its something to avoid unless you think it will actually help the conversation.Either through wit or a point. Sarcasm is not nearly as much a sign as intellegence as you think it is. And in fact it can be extremely annoying, especically when a serious matter is discussed or a person has frayed nerves. Many people can be idioits yet be sarcastic at will.
