Defense of the Ancients (Warcraft 3 Custom Game)
I think this is a pretty cool game. It's definitely not for the casual gamer tho. There's like 80 different heroes and it takes a long time to learn all of them. But once you get an idea of how a majority of the moves work, it's pretty easy.
Who else plays this game? I'd like to play on Bnet sometime.

If you really like dota, try GGclient. Why it's better to play there?
+ Ladder. Yep, you gain levels for winning in dota there. Good thing for those crazed about stats
+ Leavers get banned. I don't play dota myself, but many of my friends do and they say leavers are the worst thing you can get in the game. This problem is minimized on GGC.
+ Less laggy
+ Less noobs

I admit it's hard to be pro, and since I quit plying it regulalry, I am no pro. Now I just pop in from time to time for two or three -arem .
@ Doom
Leavers are realy a pain in the @$$ . But so they are in most of team games, shooters excluded(?).

Actually if you have a really good late game hero, one leaver can be good. Cause you get all of his items and you'll get stacked.

I truely LIKE playing Dota, but don't like all the people who hate "stupid n00bs"... They seem to forget that they were once n00bs too... And the dependance on items to make your hero the "best" is absurd! I presonally believe it should be the ability's of the selected hero and the player, PLAYING the hero which should determine how good they are.... NOT some item that grants +250 damage....

I play DotA casually, but mostly only in-house games. The game is pretty unbalanced, so if you're drafting or randoming, then the outcome is often determined simply by what hero you happen to get. If you're not, then pubs will just pick the same heroes with chance-based skills over and over and it gets fairly tiresome very quickly. It's also nice to play with people who you know won't stack, leave, or backdoor.

TFT is also great but, it's very micro-intensive. You have to do a lot of thinking in order NOT to suck. Dota is somehow more relaxing With a proper strategy, you don't really need an extra pair of hands and eyes.
Best dota players have apm around 90.
Best TFT players reach 300 apm without extra unnecessary actions taken to improve their apm score.

I play DotA sometimes, to be honest I once decided to get "good" at DotA. It was actually at Dreamhack. Any way, after playing 5-10 games I realized it was quite fun, the first three games was a nightmare. My point is that most people that claim that DotA is boring is either people that haven't REALLY tried it, you haven't tried it until you can play 30 min on Bnet without being called a noob. Most people find it boring cuz' they, frankly, suck or have played it way too much. I've played a LOT of wc3 maps and made many, and to be honest; I haven't played with any one of my "wc3-friends" that haven't enjoyd a good DotA game after they've learned the basics.
Sorry for the long post folks.
Tips for n00bs: If you want to learn DotA you should first try out the "Tank Commander"-like maps, they are basicly the same and you learn the "character control", which actually is very important in both DotA and TC-maps. In TC though you don't have to be as tactical with the lvls (it really helps though, but if you put your skill point in the wrong skill at lvl 7 you won't lose the game (which you might do in DotA)) and money is easier to get (but it's more important to) and you usually don't HAVE to get the combo items. At least I found the TC-maps very useful and helping, you could also get an AI version of DotA, even though I just think that the AI is just a pain in the [PREVIUSLY MENTIONED IN EARLIER POST]!

yeah, well said.
Tips for newbs:
- play skeleton king most newb-friendly char there is.
- Stay close to the tower early game
- don't charge
- If creeps start hitting you, go back immediately.

Problem: XP. And the fact this is kind of harder to pull in the side lanes.
And the Hydralisk hero is better imo.
AoM >>>>>>> Dota.

The sentinel bottom/scourge top are the most melee-friendly lanes.
XP won't be that low if you keep close to creeps without actually getting hit and do not die a lot, which is a problem for all newbies.
I didn't mean Leoric is the strongest or smth, just most newb-friendly.

Fixed!
And watch out for the towers in early games, they can turn you shreds, unless you're a tank guy or has >700 range.
Isn't this getting a bit (just a bit or maybe not) off topic, there's tons of guides and hints out there, the AI version usually have tips for what to buy for each specific character (it usually says the same for most character though(maybe it's depending on primary attribute?)).

yeah, but most of the guides focus too much on last hitting/denying. it's not that important for a newbie.
And most people forget it is a team game. You can get lots of kills if you pair yourself with a proper character. Ezalor/Zeus, or Mirana/Earthshaker, for example.
Oh, and the ultimate tip, unless you're Nerubian Assassin or Oblivion, do NOT get dagon. period.

I made a test with two friends, I don't remember what character we used (it was a long time since I played), we edited the map so that one of us started with a lvl 25 char and I and the other friend was able to take him down when was at lvl 7, both of us died to though and one of the few creeps got the kills (that's truly annoying!). I think I just wrote all this just to strengthen your point, even though it's quite a bad story since I don't remember the details. Actually, when I read it, it really looks like a fake story, don't it?
EDIT: Is it only me that thinks that denying is low? And when playing with AI bots, they are just too good at denying, it's all they do. Almost.

denying just doesn't make a damn difference unless you're playing a pro game. Better to focus on last hitting.
