It's not so important haste or slow, it's more important who will start first and how the battle will run..
I like Haste more.

Quote: Hmmm...the poll started with the idea of "big battles" not main fight between 2 human players (final fight or more than 1 final fight). I guess big battles means against AI so as to reach your opponent in the end. In my opinion, i say again, slow is better than haste referring to battles against AI. 90% of game big battles mean fighting guards not human player
Cheers
He said - (classic 7 stack army from one town). So its either human player, or computer hero. It cant be guards.
Since almost nobody play with computer players when playing online, its understood that its the main fight against your opponent.

I mainly play with Stronghold. It's all simple:
1) Cast Mass Haste
2) Since speed differences between Stronghold troops are llow, your troops will go in a row. ( If you have Tactics Advantage even Hasted Ogre Mages can reach the enemy in the first round.)
3) Kill everything. By the time it's the opponent's turn again, I don't know what be saved out of the battle.
However, the ideal situation is when the opposition is Mass Slowed, and you are Mass Hasted. This can be obtained, if you play Stronghold, when you get the Armor of the Damned. As a matter of fact, I think this artefact is most useful to Barbarians.

Every town enjoys Armor of the Damned, but it's the perfect artifact against barbarians who can't get Water magic by simply levelling up.
You need a scholar or a witch hut to get water magic with a barbarian and without it, you will be crushed against a guy with Armor of the Damned.

Yes. Every town enjoys armour of the damned, but maybe none so much as necro. Necro can have armour of the damned AND cloak of the undead king wielded at the same time!

I had Cloak of the Undead King, Armor of the Damned, Bow of the Sharpshooter, Elixir of Life(For dragons and Titans in the army) and Shackles of War on the same guy. That was pretty cool

In HOMM 3, the one who can deal the first blow always have the advantage. So HASTE for the wind.. I mean win.

That's assuming after your haste enough of your units moves before your opponents does. If your opponent mass slows you, you are definitely definitely screwed.

Best move is to cast mass haste and then wait with first unit...

NO. WE Barbarians love it most, cause it's vital for us to have the first strike. The Armmor helps a little, and the Mass Curse and Mass Weakness make the retaliation less dangerous.
However, Sandro's campaign was fun to play.

If you wait with first unit, and then that unit gets slowed, and they wait with a unit that has a faster speed to yours, won't you have to go before them?

Definitely Haste over Slow
I agree with the comments made in the previous page - You can't be sure whether your opponent has magic resistance. So Haste is definite, whereas Slow isn't.
To think about it in another way, there is "minimum speed" of 2(or is it 3? I can't remember exactly) whereas there's no upper limit of maximum speed when a unit stack gets the beneficial haste spell.
Assuming everything else equal, mass haste is almost always superior to mass slow. Because this is a debate on spell haste vs slow, not about strategy play. So the idea of whether to take an action, or to wait first, is not really applicable to this debate, I think.
With such presumptions, I'm absolutely sure that the verdict is haste over slow, when deciding to cast either of the 2 mass spells.
Proponents for slow over haste, what's your defence?

Both the same in the aspect.
One side will basically get you two turns.
Just that a more offensive hero would most likely want Haste as a more faster but not as offensive would rather stick with slow.

Even though i voted for Expert Haste(long time ago),now I think both of them are about the same.Playing Stronghold I would want expert haste, playing Sylvan-expert slow.

for me, missile units determine this.
if i plan to be a range attacker, i specialize Slow. and vis-a-vis.
but generally i'd favor haste.

Haste unless prayer is available.
I usually use prayer instead of haste and slow.
I voted haste though; I almost allways charge the enemy, and haste is the only way to get Royal Griffins, Champions and Crusaders to the other side (unless you have Prayer of course )

If you don't have any artifacs that provides speed or fight on grass, your Crusader won't come over the whole battlefield.
If I don't remember wrong, prayer increase your attack, defense and speed by 4. Your Crusader will then have 10 speed... Not enough.
But Haste gives you 5 points and will not get your crusader over in one turn neither.
I find prayer better than haste myself.
