Quote: The_Death, are you involved professionaly in music or is just a hobby for you? Just wondering.
Just a hobby, actually it's pretty new (I am also a very skilled 3D modeller, texturer & programmer). But my knowledge about sound (in general) is far greater than the music, and thus I had no problem to understand any 'technical' details when I started to use synthesizers or samplers (I even know how to program a sampler myself, of course it takes time which is why I didn't yet, but I plan to).
Also by the way (@william), most synthesizers are not entirely useful by 'themselves', to create interesting sounds, you'll need to mix between many at arbitrary volumes, etc.. Or manipulate the waves -- for that you'll most definitely need a sound editing utility. Cool Edit (now called Adobe Audition), Goldwave, SoundForge (very overrated though), and even free ones. They allow you to zoom in waves and manipulate them at the sample level, and allow you to draw envelopes for the volume (to make mixes with a lot of different synthesizers).
So in conclusion synthesizers, especially less complex ones are best if you combine and mix them to create interesting and warm instruments. That's basically how I do it.
I also recommend image-synths (free ones), which are not real-time unfortunately (but have greater precision than the VirSyn Cube, which is also a similar kind-of-synth). Of course you'll need a good understanding of sound spectrums or "image-editing" software because you'll then draw the spectrum with an image editor, and use the free image-synth to convert it to sound.
Coagula and Audio Paint are among the best ones I could find (and free).

I listened to them, but I had difficulty finding distinctive differences between the songs. Mainly due to those constant violin-sounds in just about every song. Perhaps it makes them sound a bit too much movie-music like ?
That aside, while I find them suitable for soundtracks somewhat, they didn't manage to touch me on an emotional level. It didn't got into a specific mood from them.
Dungeon Siege theme sounds eerie, but I'm not sure if it is fit for a siege. For Dark elves, maybe.
Sylvan theme was VERY nice and very fitting in my opinion. Distinctive Irish sound near the end as well, reminded a bit of H4 general themes But it would have gone better without the violins in the beginning of the song.
Sylvan 2 sounds a it more jungle like. While I like it, I'm not sure if it fits a sylvan

The Haven theme had horns and brass (I think it fits), something which others didn't

Well of course I selected it for dark elves, I don't know how Dungeon will be in H6.

I did not compose the music, yes I agree here
Thanks for the review

Here are some great songs from Spellforce 1 that fit the H5 ambiance. It's around 35 MB but I promise you it's worth the download, the songs are superb!
linky
And please I would like some feedback, or at least say that you don't want to download 35 MB (although I promise it's worth it!)
Oh and I know both of Dungeon don't fit too well (I even made an alternate)

Combat01: Decent enough, although I didn't experience any peaks of emotion or thrill in it.
Combat02: Dito.
Combat03: Again, dito. It's as if they deliberately try to avoid giving moments in the songs where you actually get an adrenaline rush Instead, every time I feel it could reach that level, it changes the tune / melody into the wrong direction. It's like almost getting an orgasm, but then, not.
Dungeon Siege: The warchant voices are perfect - especially for a dark elf faction, based underground. But like the previous three, it doesn't reach "orgasm" xD
Tavern Academy: Decent.
Tavern Haven: Call me strange but, I found this one a LOT more suitable for Sylvan But it can work for Haven.
Tavern Necropolis: It sounds distinctively forlorn and eerie. Not too sure if it suits a tavern though, even Necro.
Terrain Sand: It has an arabic touch to it, it can work, although it doesn't give a distinctive feeling to me. (Sorry, I'm a picky, tough crowd )
Town Academy: Arabic, it would suit such a ground-based faction.
Town Dungeon: Sounds a bit like the H5 Dungeon Siege theme. Only worse XD
Town Dungeon Alternative: It could fit, but it sounds very movie-like and has the same issue as all other themes so far; it doesn't reach
Town Fortress: I've probably listened to this one for hours without realizing I was even listening to it... Didn't really strike me.
Town Haven: Suitable, but again, it doesn't reach, for me
Town Inferno: Seems a bit too calm and soothing for Inferno really.
Town Necro: Calm and soothing, but not eerie enough perhaps. Could do though.
Town Stronghold: Doesn't sound very orcish like to me really; the voices are too high. Actually, I think it would have been PERFECT had the voices been deep, low, manly, like warchants.
Town Sylvan: Quite fitting here
My appologies for the overal cranky and deminishing opinion, but as I said, I am hard to please Feel free to listen to mine and return the 'favour'.
