My favorite games (with all the expansions)
Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, Lineage 2 (not playing anymore due to some reasons - because it's not free, because of time and because of other RL problems), Heroes of Might and Magic 5, Spellforce 1 (2 sucks IMO), etc

cuz normal HL kinda sucks
You should try out The Specialists or Firearms -- the former has bots incorporated, the latter has the "Marine Bot" (quite good bots). Yes I like to play with bots, I play mostly offline (cuz i have WON not Steam) and it's always nice to know you can fill in the seats when you can't find enough people to play with.. and the bots are very fun and good.
Heck, even Counter-strike with PODBot (very good bots, even take cover and assist each other!) is OK -- don't get me wrong, I'm not your usual CS maniac, I play it tactically not to "own" them with 'da big gunz' (I crouch, I handle recoil, I use tactical advantage (not just shoot & pray for headshot), etc.)
The Specialists is very cool, it is somewhat an action-style mod with Slow Motion (in multiplayer) and Matrix-style characters/stunts. You can flip off walls, kung fu your enemy (beat the crap outta him) and disarm him, and has a lot of weapons.. Not to mention the models are kinda cool (player models). There's Castor Troy from Face-off (movie), Morpheus from Matrix (additionally you can download Neo and Trinity as well, from non-official sites; it's called the "Matrix Pack" if you want to search for it), Action Gordon (gordon with a trench coat), an Agent (Matrix or FBI?) and some Mercenaries & Seals that look cool when you perform stunts. If you don't have Steam, use the 2.1 version rather than the 3.0 one
EDIT: Oh yeah I forgot about Hitman, he's a model too
Firearms is a way-mod, with cool weapons & stuff. It's kinda cool if you play with a whole team, 16 vs 16 (use marine bot to fill the gaps) it gets into the war feeling. Anyway I'm not going to advertise anymore, if you are interested check them out, although by today it's kinda hard to find all the pieces together
by the way, they're free

I loved all the might and magic games from mandate of heaven to day of the destroyer. I never played the latest one and glad I didn't as I read it was a bit of a flop.
I can go on about older games that just isn't accessible anymore such as urban assault battlezone jagged alliance sindicate dungeon keeper terminal velocity zork nemesis bladerunnner baldurs gate gabriel knight old ass games but fun as hell
I always wanted to play these games on modern portables but guess the modding community never thought it was worth converting these classics imo... shame really. I think adventure games would have rocked the psp consoles socks off.

About time another person who came along that plays old games. I have Terminal Velocity too. My favourite game is actually a DOS one which I have said in many threads, but I shall say it again, Crusader: No Remorse (also No Regret is good, maybe even better).
I think games back then were great. Even though the graphics weren't the best for some of them, the gameplay and fun factor was good. I could play the games for hours on end. In fact, when I was about 7 years old, I was playing Crusader: No Remorse, and I had been playing it for maybe 1 or 2 hours and then I started to get a headache and it got worse and worse until it became so bad I went to hospital. I was in there for 3 days. When I got out, straight back into the game
That is why I also think that HOMM2 is the better game in the series basically because it was the most fun to play. The graphics were not as good as HOMM3 but in the long run the graphics don't really matter when playing the games. Kinda like the saying Quality over Quantity, but in this case it is Gameplay over Graphics. That's my opinion anyway.

Graphical quality could be better utilised in some type of art games or something. But the term playing games means its supposed to stimulate us, by testing our mental capacity and think on your feet.
I dont like this 'best game' topics, though its very interesting to hear peoples opinions, I believe that old school ness cant be summed up in a handful or even a dozen of titles. You need an entire thread dedicated to it imo. (hint change this forum name to : older games exist too lol)
Just thinking now I could have trippled my first list with more titles. Which were equally entertaining, oh what the hell here they are
Dark forces,
Tie fighter,
Liero,
beasts and bumpkins,
lords of magic,
full throttle,
freddy the fish(yar),
men in black,
goosebumps,
wacky wheels,
theme hospital,
hexen,
carmageddon,
nox,
diablo,
dark reign
etc etc
While doing research to find out the names of dos games that I've played, I stumbled upon a company called gt_interactive(creators of Unreal tournament doh)
just look at this company's track record for publishing games; untill it was bought by infogrames and then later by sierra..
