Advance Wars.
The series includes Advance Wars, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising, and Advance Wars: Dual Strike (that I know of).
It is turnbased, and is very addictive. Since it is on the DS, means it is portable too, so you can play it just about anywhere. Like most turnbased it uses a rock, paper, scissor like theme.
There are three 'factory' types from which you can buy certain units from. Each unit has its own uses. Advance Wars has the least, AW2 adds a single unit, and Dual Strike has the most.
Each round you get funds from each building you control. There are factories (all 3 kinds), cities, and your headquarters. With these funds you can buy units from any captured factory. (You either have to start with a factory or capture one to buy units).
However, everything can be turned on its ear depending on which Commanding Officer (or CO) you have. They each have a special ability that can litterally change the rules of the game.
Some give you extra money and reduce costs of units (but their units are weaker). Some have extra strong units (but each unit cost slightly more then normal). Some can change the weather, damage all enemy units, or increase att/defense, or a number of other things. Some of these they can do from the beginning, some they need a meter to fill up to do.
Anybody played this highly addictive game?

I've played them a bit, but not the newest one, Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. It's playable online, so maybe you ought to get it if you liked the others.

That's the best part.

Beaten the first two with perfect S rating from the first and second campaign.
Plus all the battleroom maps in the first.
Addicting, how come?
I don't actually like the second so much because of the supers, they break the game too much. Sami super=instant win.
Never played the last one.

I played the first almost non-stop (even snuck it into work). The second is just as addicting, but at least I don't bring it to work. Play it as much as possible. I've gotten S rank on all but a few of them (mostly green earth AW2) and I am working on getting S on those . I kinda like the old pilot's super. A free machine gun or rocketlauncer (Soldier or Mech) on each city you own that is not occupied. On large maps he that can be a whole lot.
Collin is fun too. 20% reduced cost for 10% reduced attack. Though I like his normal power over his super. Normal gives you 1.5x your current funds. (so if you start with 40k you have 60k after using it). That is for AW2. Havn't played either Dual Strike or Day of Ruin.

Yeah, I am still trying to finish it. So far I can get 2 of green earth missions S rank, but the last 2 they thrash me so soundly. I can't figure out how to even win with a C rank. Yet.

i have advance wars dual strike and days of ruin
dual strike pretty good but a tag power is very strong.
i prefer days of ruin as the co's don't have as powerful abilities.
days of ruin adds several new things to the mix but loses some of the extras in dual strike. never played the gba ones before though.
anyone beaten days of ruin? i'm stuck on the insanely harsh last level.

Hey Mytical, I went to Italy meaning I had to be in a car for 14-16 hours both ways from Denmark and I brought along with me my: GBA!!!!
And I thought: what the hell: Ill play some Advance wars: black hole rising, it is tough and hard but ill give it a shot.
Man was I positively supriced! I finished the last blue moon map and won Yellow Comet, then today (on my way home) I came to green earth and thought: This is just TOO HARD and now I shall not play it until next roadtrip
But the game has become easier, I think it is because of my age as I was very young when I bought it, and AW:BHR needs some really good tactics which gets easier to figure out, when the age takes it mental toll on you

Advance Wars DS is one of the best gaming deals I've ever seen. I got more hours of pure gameplay excellence out of that game than any since... well, since HOMM3!
The next game I'm really looking forward to on the DS is Disgaea DS, the latest release from old-school super-publisher Atlus. After watching the preview at DS.IGN. In a nutshell, it mixes turn-based strategy with a sort of chain-attack system. The previews are almost universally favorable so I'm pumped.
I'm not too sure about the fairly recently released Final Fantasy Tactics A2 though. Has anyone played it?

Best Game Boy games ever!
I hate the direction the new game has taken (CO powers did need to be nerfed, but the complete cosmetic makeover, GENERIC ANIME APOCALYPSE storyline, and total neutering of COs is appalling.)
Advance Wars 2 was the best of the bunch I think, they all have overpowered COs but BHR has none of the tag-team silliness that can arise in 3, whilst having much more variety than Advance Wars 1 boasts.

tag co's was a good idea but using a tag power is overpowered...
But the only co's who need fixing would probably be kanbei (ridiculous stats since dual strike), Sensei (The co powers define broken), Grit (automatic stalemate or victory on most maps), colin (my tank may be ten percent weaker but it cost nearly 50% less), Hachi (like colin but with an even more ridiculous co power...[lol my city became a piperunner])
Dor/dc seems experimental... Although it introduced a large new strategic depth it forsakes what the previous series built up...

AW2 fixes should be, imo:
Grit nerf
Kanbei nerf (more expensive)
Colin nerf (worse units or more expensive)
Sturm M-m-m-m-MONSTER NERF
Sensei slight nerf/reworking
Sonja buff
Adder buff
Jess buff
Sonja and Jess got buffed in DS anyways, so it's partially vindicated.

well sturm is fairly balanced the only reason why i'd play him is to recon rush... a firepower boost and movement speed of one on all terrain... what about him makes him so overpowered?
Kanbei, his units should be 30% more expensive imo
colin, the normal co power is extremely broken... replacing it would ease most of the troubles
Grit, choose either your range bonus or the attack bonus... both is ridiculous
Hachi, Barter and merchant union reduces prices to 70% , Normal price reduction becomes 10%.
Sensei, Lengthen co bar, spamming his power is the only problem.
(mechs=2000 gold, with 10 cities you get 10000 worth of infantry for free or 20000 worth of mechs for free... and with such a small co bar the powers pay for themselves.)
as of Dual strike adder was made near useless (Koal has everything adder has and an attack bonus on roads...)

Sturm? STURM?
You mean you don't find 120% ATK/DEF with 1 movement per square over all terrain, and NO additional cost, overpowered?
He doesn't even have any drawbacks!
