Birth of a Barbarian
How do I beat the third stage? I'm up against a hero with a ridiculous meteor shower (kills 30+ wolf riders!) and the enemy gets an insane number of reinforcements. I don't have any magic at all. I never skipped any stat boosting buildings or chances to advance levels, and I never went to scholars or witches who might give me nasty magic skills, so I only have good combat skills. I only play on the default difficulty.

Artillery skill and a ballista helps a lot in that campaign.

Well, I did manage to win this stage with this strategy: I attacked hard on week 1 by taking the first available town and then killing 1 of the 2 uber enemies (the one with meteor shower). Dividing up my units and spacing them out with tactics minimized the damage his meteor storm did to me. From there, the northeast and northwest towns fell in just week 2. In week 3 I took the southeast town but lost northwest, and in week 4 I retook northwest and killed their last hero.
The thing is, I only used barbarian units the first week. After that, I stuck to using fortress, which I think made me move well in the swamp (couldn't really tell due to expert pathfinding anyway)
The artillery and estates skills were very nice, obviously. Attacking so early wouldn't have been possible without all that early gold. Speaking of gold, I never took experience from chests, since there is always ample experience from baddies, but even with that gold and the estates gold I would still often run low. I would often hire all the available troops, even in a town I knew was doomed to fall, only to keep the enemy from hiring them, and to do as much turret damage as possible.
Overall, the map is winnable by sheer attrition if your first attack is done really, really early.
