And I disagree with you saying that an instrument played live without any amplification or use of speakers will sound better in most cases. I think they are both needed especially for live. Could you imagine the guitar band member playing their guitar without speakers or amps in front of a very large crowd? Most of the crowd probably wouldn't be able to hear it.
Better =/= Louder

Also I was thinking along the lines of a full orchestra. Not a concert with everyone screaming. You can hardly listen to the quality of the music in that case.

and of course i was talking about acoustic instruments.

Lol. Well I guess what I said applied to Electronic music as well. Since keybaords kinda need speakers and amps to be able to be heard well.

And a full orchestra, well I guess speakers or amps really don't apply there lol.

Now, onto another topic if some of you wish to do so...

What year do you think was the best for music and why?

For me, the year when the first movie-like score was made (well I mean by the today's movie genre, not the ones in 1910s ).

Why? Because it added a whole new dimension to orchestral music (which was classical before). I'm not saying classical music is not enjoyable, but the movie scores are for me much more "touching" because that's what they're supposed to be (since they're in a movie). For example, when someone dies, you (usually) have a very sad or tragedy music. Or when something bad happens. Or in action scenes, you have action music. All of these in orchestral thematics. It's wonderful. It really touches you (me in this case).

Electronic ambiance music is also relaxing too

Nice. For me, it is the 1980's because Electronic music was really at a high point at that stage. Ever seen the movie Scarface? That movie has a wonderful soundtrack to it (in my opinion) and it really puts me in the mood. I know what you mean by when somebody dies for example and then the music really hits you. It does that to me as well, but when it is in the Electronic form. I really can't imagine Action scenes having an Orchestral soundtrack going with it. It just doesn't seem right, in my opinion. Are there any movies actually that have that?

Although I must admit that I enjoy the 60's for bands such as The Beatles and also the 1980's again for bands like Depeche Mode, A-ha etc. That time period was great for Techno-pop music, since Digital had been introduced (before that it was pretty much analog).

And I agree, electronic ambiance is really relaxing. Sometimes i like to just lie down and listen to it. It really calms me down.

I'll upload two music from Assassins and Terminator 3 (action music) and the game Planescape Torment. By the way, "orchestral" music has a lot more instruments than usually you find in classical music (percussion for example, etc). The music I'll upload will have mostly percussion, but they're all acoustic instruments.

For example, in the Terminator 3 one (Hearse Rent a Car) you can hear at the beginning some horn

Get it here.

ps: The Assassins "Cemetery" music has a lot of non-action at the beginning. Skip to 1:20 or somewhere there.

Nonono, you don't avoid making mistakes in improvisation, you hide them by playing the entire tune a bit differently, thus dragging people's attention away from the mistake itself.
And you know perfectly well what you'll be doing next. You'll improvise

Oh and...

But if it is improvisation, then wouldn't it be difficult to try and hide the tune? It isn't as if the person knows what they will be playing next, or if he/she even remembers what he/she just did.

Actually most improvisers do remember what they just did (to avoid repetition), and have a pattern on what they'll do since they're improvising using a certain scale (unless percussions are in question, and they're the easiest to improvise, as long as you have a good sense of rhytm). An interesting sidenote is that rock'n'roll and even heavy metal players most often use blues scales in solos and other improvisations.

See, in order for an improvisation to sound good, you can't just spray out random sounds (at least on real musical instruments ). The goal is to make it cool, not sound like a cat being sodomized by a two-headed ogre with Tourette's syndrome (except black metal. Sorry KD, I had to ). And that's what the scales are for. They are basically showing which sounds tend to go well with each other.

That's what improvisation is about, and that's how it's most commonly used if you want people to like it. At least on guitar. I am not really familiar with other instruments, but I'm guessing there are similarities.

Thinking...

Still, I prefer normal records and live performances over musics made by ONLY softwares. And I don't count speaker as software music.

Fully electronic made musics sound un-real, fake and and you don't have to be musician. You shoud go for playing real instruments, such as guitar, bass guitar, drumms, keyboards, piano, organ, etc.

How can it sound fake when it isn't even trying to emulate another instrument? Electronic sounds are unique. If I was to create a sound, it wouldn't be to try and emulate something. There are synths that do emulate other instruments, but I really don't see how you can call electronic music fake when they aren't even emulating anything. It is a unique sound.

How can you not be a musician when you make music? That doesn't even make sense.

Funny:

A keyboard instrument is any musical instrument played using a musical keyboard. The most common of these is the piano. Other widely used keyboard instruments include various types of organs as well as other mechanical, electromechanical and electronic instruments. In common language, it is mostly used to refer to keyboard-style synthesizers.

Okay, if they imitate instruments, and sound enough realistic, i don't have problem with them, but if they sounds like techno and disco, they sucks. I hate Synth Bass.

And Techno "musicians" are not musicians. They are computer freaks who use Fruit Loop Studio.
DJs are not musicians either, they are just computer freaks.

But the main point of synthesizers is not to emulate other instruments. that is NOT why they were made. I don't see how you could have a problem with something that is unique and doesn't sound like anything else. And what is wrong with synth bass? I am pretty sure a lot of the songs you have listened to have synth bass in them.

Yes they are. Stop giving me this stuff how they're not. And if they are computer freaks then what does that make you? I remember you once saying to me how you have used the program before. Oh well

Not all DJ's use computers, Drako.

Quote:

That was what I was talking about as well. I really am confused. do you like Hardware synths or do you dislike them? You have gotten your point about disliking software synths (for weird reasons, imo) but Hardware are pretty much the same. It's just that they are 3D, able to be touched etc. Although I must say that people can do MANY more things with a Software synthesizers due to all the things you can do within a computer.

I listen to mainly Rock, Metal, Blues and Classical.

And see.

Blues

Rock, Metal, Rap, Disco, Pop, Jazz, and many other popular music are based on Blues. As a guitarist, I say, blues is the eaisest to play.

Easist to play, isn't it?

And some guitar improvisation

Okay, another pretty easy blues lick

Some powerchords

And one of the hardest TAB

A great rock solo.

Do you think any other genres, such as rap, techno and trance can be good as this? No, cannot be.

And William told me on sykpe he HATES blues. But why? Cuz its not electronic?

Anyway.

Maybe 99% of popular music are elvolved from blues, lets not forget Classical music

Classical music influences on popular music

Classical music is a great infuence on Popular music, mainly Metal and Jazz genres.

Symphonic Metal, Nightwish.
William told me he can imagine them without snytheisers. Well, I cannot. With their synths they emulate a Full Orchestra. And its very hard. And classical music is a great influence on them.

Or Power Metal!
Power Metal guitarists guitar solos are mainly influenced by Classical music. See this.

And also, not to forget JS Bach's organ works.
Toccata... a great influence on Black Metal and Gothic Metal. And also used as soundtrack for horror movies. JS Bach's organ and piano works are great influences for Metal / Rock / Electronic music keyboardists...
Another proof that Classical music is a grat influence for many metal bands... and another one...

And, lets talk more about guitar later...

Now, go for The Beatles

The Beatles

Paul McCartney - Lead Vocals, Bass Guitar, Piano
John Lennon - Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Piano
George Harrison - Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals
Ringo Starr - Drumms and Percusions, Backing vocals

The Beatles... I think everyone heard of this band. They were very famous in the 60s... They were the main influence for every kind of music, from 80s disco and pop to hard rock and heavy metal.

And why?
George Harrison's guitar works were amazing (as people say), they made som beautiful and sad songs (yesterday)... Yesterday! Did you know this song has to most cover versions in the world?
They also invented Heavy Metal... the Frist Heavy Metal / Hard Rock was Revolution by The Beatles. Though Black Sabbath's ron Man had the firsts heavy metal guitar riff...

They were the must sucesfull and best effect band in the earth...

Okay, their discography

Please Please Me – 1963. march 22.
With the Beatles – 1963. november 22.
A Hard Day's Night – 1964. july 10.
Beatles for Sale – 1964. december 4.
Help! – 1965. august 6.
Rubber Soul – 1965. december 3.
Revolver – 1966. august 5.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band – 1967. juny 1.
The Beatles (White Album) – 1968. november 22.
Yellow Submarine – 1969. januar 17.
Abbey Road – 1969. september 26.
Let It Be – 1970. march 8.

The Beatles has disbanded in 1970 march 9...

They were the first band who used Classical music instruments, or a full orchestra.

And they have invented Beat Music. A kind of music you can dance to.

First of all, good post Drako. Maybe one of the best I have seen from you in the Tavern. Now onto what you have said.

Quote:

I don't think you can really compare two entirely different genres to one another. For one thing, they both have entirely different instruments that are used with them. They also are made in very different ways. They also sound nothing alike. Would you compare Screamo with Opera music? No. Because they are so different that I don't think they could really be compared. And Screamo isn't really singing anyway so meh

Quote:

I don't like Blues music because I just don't like the sound of it. So I guess because I like electronic, that means I dislike all other genres? No. I like a variety of genres. There are some that I don't like because they just don't appeal to me.

Quote:

Where did you get those statistics from, if I may ask?

Quote:

I told you no such thing. In fact, i never once mentioned Nightwish. You were doing the talking about Nightwish. You kept saying how synthesizers were the main part of Symphonic Metal music and I was disagreeing with you.

You do know that there are a lot of Horror soundtracks that have used electronic music as well, right? Take Day of the Dead (1980's version) for an example. Great use of Electronic sounds in that movie. In fact, many soundtracks from movies in the 1980's used Electronic.

Again, nice post. I am looking forward to some more responses by all of you

Jazz is elvolved from Blues, Ragtime, Classical and Folk.
Disco is elvovled from Funk and Soul, which has elvolved from Blues. And genres such as techno and trance are elvovled from disco.
R&B elvolved from blues, that's why its called Rhytm and Blues.
