SIEGE innovations
The new system of siege is a mystery for most of us. We haven’t any screenshots and there is not a lot of news.
Here are the few things I know (if you can complete the list, just do it) :
- No more catapult.
- You can have combat across a castle wall.
- You can put your own creatures or heroes in the towers.
- You can’t shoot above the walls.
There are some questions I can’t answer.
How can the non-flying creatures break into the castle ?
Must the walls be destroyed by the creatures ?
Does the drawbridge still exist?
If you have any ideas about how works the siege in Heroes4, or any suggestions, tell them here !!!

Ballista will be able to shoot over the walls.
On the gamespot videos, I paused the game to see the stats of the balista. Because of the low resolution that was impossible, but I've managed to read the specilaties of the ballista:
-no range penalty
-no wall penalty
that makes one hell of a conquering unit

- No more catapult.
=> Yes, it's gone with the other War machine. (Only ballista remains and it is a 'creature')
- You can have combat across a castle wall.
=> Yes, and I actually believe the defenders will stand on the walls if present, or they can climb them easily from the inside.)
- You can put your own creatures or heroes in the towers.
=> Yes. the towers provide protection and also boost the shoot power of the creatures in it.
- You can’t shoot above the walls.
=> I don't know about this, but I'm wondering if there will be any creatures behind the walls. Hmm.. well perhaps there will, and then perhaps not.
There are some questions I can’t answer.
How can the non-flying creatures break into the castle ?
=> My guess here is that they have to scale the walls. This will make them vulnerable to attacks and make the moat a real asset, as it should be.
Must the walls be destroyed by the creatures ?
=> Why? I'm actually inclined to believe that you can't destroy the walls at all any more. This solves the problem also of not needing to repair the walls between sieges, since the walls are never destroyed to begin with.
Does the drawbridge still exist?
=> Pure specualation on this one, but I believe it exists in the case that creatures from the castle ant to exit.
Overall, I believe castles will be harder to take because enemy troops will now spend several rounds in the moat and scling the walls which will no doubt make them very vulnerable. This will also make flying creatures very desirable in siege combat, at least for the attacker.

ideas
First I thought that there could be a system of loophole replacing the tourettes, but now I think the shooters just have to stand on the walls or towers of the castles to have boost and protections.
I would have liked to have an aris to break the wall, it would have been realistic and different from the system of catapult. The aris would have to move to break the walls instead of the catapult.
I hope the drawbridge will still exist, because it is also a realistic element in the castle sieges.
I think castles will be harder to attack. And it makes me wonder about some aspects of the game.
Will the difficulty for attacking castle make players play more defensive, and probably more boaring, or will it make them play pore offensive, and certainly more exciting?
Maybe you will be able to defend your castle with a few creatures in it, and with the others go to scoot or try to attack ennemies.

I think it works somewhat like Lords of Magic or Age of Wonders sieges perhaps. The ranged creatures gain more power and range when they stand on the walls, as well as the tower boosts for the archers. The attacker I think must destroy the drawbridge/section of the wall to get inside, but should not be too hard to break through and should not be too hard to rebuild after the battle. However yes, the defender will have a great advantage the way I see it.

Well, there`s many ways one can make siege battles work.
1. Some units who have blunt weapons and are strong or powerful magic creatures might be able to break walls down.
Walls could therefor have their own health and units their siege damage value.
2. Tunnels. Units could be able to break walls down with digging tunnels below. Moat filled with water or other liguids would make digging tunnels near impossible. Defenders could also be able to dig tunnels so that they could engage attackers in tunnels in case there isn`t moat. Digging tunnels should take numerous turns. And the shovels for the army could cost large pile of ore and lots of wood along with money.
3. Siege Machines. Ballista and Catapult aren`t the only siege machines invented. Siegetowers (one siegetower costs huge amount of wood) could enable attackers to climb on walls. Ladders also, but defenders could "push" them off from the walls. Sling Machine (Throwing Machine. I don`t know the proper name for those) works quite same like ballista. Wallbreakers could enable to break the gates, but if there is a moat it couldn`t be possible unless it is filled with something.
4. Spells.

Even if the new siege rules do encourage you to be defensive, the new rules on mines would encourage you to be aggressive. With mines that run out of resources, A defensive player could have serious resource problems if his mines deplete or keep getting captured (and depleted) by the enemy because he stays in his castle instead of going out and grabbing new ones. If all your minerals run out you may not be able to buy your lvl 4s anymore.

You have great ideas about siege machines, but who could use them ?
There are only a few creatures which have the ability to climb walls, to rise to a ladder or to use machines. Mostly the humans could do that (and the heroes too).
I have never seen any nightmares, hydras or nagas rising a ladder... I hope the Haven creatures would not have advantages in sieges : they already have 3 shooters.
Siegetowers and tunnels may be good.

siege machines
Why not ladders? Yes they could be used only by certain creatures. Of course the haven would have an advantage, and some other technics would be necessary to give advantages to the other castles.
The question which often comes to my mind is this one:
Will an armee be obliged to have flyers to attack a castle efficiently? Or a lot of shooters?
If I understood well, you have to choose between the two L4 creatures of your castle. If you are obliged to choose angels when you have a haven, I don't see the interest.
