Gargoyles should be evil....
i couldn't believe that the guys at 3do out gargoyles in tower when i first play heroes3....i mean gargolyes are evil creatures that turns into stone at the very sight of sunlight....this is total opposite in HOMM3...
i think they should be in Dungeons or something....or is it called Asylum now??
please to your comments

gargoyles...
...they were meant to protect the building they guarder from demons and other bad stuff so I guess they are more protectors than bad thing... ugly? maybe, but evil? I don't know...
btw: does anyone remember that cool cartoon from Disney(!) called Gargoyles? ...the last serious thing I saw them doing...

yes they are suppose to be protectors and they are not suppose to be expose to the sun....and as for disney...they are turning almost anything evil to good...for example the genies???
the genies i remembered r suppose to be sly and cunning creatures, not the funny fat jolly bloke in aladdin!!! that's just ...stupid...

will agree on that...
they can really ruin a myth... but they did quite a job with Gargoyles... more dark trhan anything they have done, more non-Disney too (personally, even as a kid I was disgusted by the good-for-the-whole-family feeling they were trying to give their cartoon/movies...)

Gargoyles evil? Well, they are good in the real world mythos. They were put as sculputres on the walls of the cathedrals in middle ages in europe, to guard the cathedrals from the demons, They were the protectors of the sanctuaryes.
As for the Gargoyles turning into stones in the sunlight, that problem can't be solved in HOMM How do Vampires don't die of sunlight in HOMM
But I don't have problem if the Gargoyles are portrayed as evil. This is one of the most flexibile creatures in the world of HOMM. It can be good or bad, and everyone can agree with the both options.

Well, we don`t know how evil are they, cuz they aren`t in any creature list... I guess they are summonable/neutral. They could guard some special building.

Gargoyles should be..
Neutrall... They are summoned by Warlocks and by Good mages. So they should be neutrall.. I think Good Gargoyles are better.

I changed my mind.
The gargoyles are evil and should be evil in homm4.
Gargoyles are EVIL demon spirits locked up inside statues. And demons aren't good at all..

err... wesley,
gargoyles were supposed to drive away the evil demons... does that make them good? no.... does the fact that they are demons inside statues make them bad? no, again... Gargoyles are neutral and their cause is whatever the one who made/imprisoned them had in mind

Hmm
They aren't neutrall.
They are made by warlocks(in the best version of fantasy)
They are evil. They should be in Necro. but then again. They should be in necropolis. DEVIL ONLY

Does this clear anything up:
The creatures we call Gargoyles first made a widespread appearance in European Gothic art. When Gothic Cathedrals were built, their roofs were almost covered with Gargoyle sculptures. They were following an ancient belief that sacred or holy places could be protected by surrounding them with ugly, threatening guardian sculptures to keep evil influences away.
Orthodox religion immediately explained away the presence of Pagan Gargoyles as symbols of the demons of the Christian hell. Therefore, in Christian architecture, Gargoyles were never allowed to occupy the center of the building (which was reserved for angels) and were relegated to the edges in keeping with their Christian-appointed position as slaves and minions of the devil.
So as Svetac kindly pointed out, they are one of the most flexible characters in HoMM4, maybe bit more toward the darker side.

Are you talking about the REAL time gargoyles(That were made by people that really lived) or the Mythologic/fantasy gargoyles (that were used in stories)?

Hmmm
It's more likely to be used by warlocks who created them. To guard their towers/castles from GOOD and EVIL creatures.
Warlocks are evil NOT GOOD.
So I guess it's evil/Neutrall.
Some Gargoyles even had riddles and stuff like that. Something like the Sphinx(the daughter of echidna version, not egyptian).

Mythology doesn't equal story. I am talking about mythology
--------
Main Entry: my·thol·o·gy
Pronunciation: mi-'thä-l&-jE
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural -gies
Etymology: French or Late Latin; French mythologie, from Late Latin mythologia interpretation of myths, from Greek, legend, myth, from mythologein to relate myths, from mythos + logos speech -- more at LEGEND
Date: 1603
1 : an allegorical narrative
2 : a body of myths : as a : the myths dealing with the gods, demigods, and legendary heroes of a particular people b : MYTHOS 2 <cold war mythology>
3 : a branch of knowledge that deals with myth
4 : a popular belief or assumption that has grown up around someone or something <defective mythologies that ignore masculine depth of feeling -- Robert Bly>
--------
and therefor I'm talking about myths
-------
Main Entry: myth
Pronunciation: 'mith
Function: noun
Etymology: Greek mythos
Date: 1830
1 a : a usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon b : PARABLE, ALLEGORY
2 a : a popular belief or tradition that has grown up around something or someone; especially : one embodying the ideals and institutions of a society or segment of society <seduced by the American myth of individualism -- Orde Coombs> b : an unfounded or false notion
3 : a person or thing having only an imaginary or unverifiable existence
4 : the whole body of myths
-------
from which the real life statues have spun off. So the answer to your question is both. The 'right' or 'real' or 'true' gargoyles should be defined by the definition above in order to call them the correct gargoyles. Others are just cheap fakes. This is what they were made for and should be used for no other means. There are other creatures to do other jobs.

so the gargoyles were used pretty much like gorgon heads in ancient greece and demon heads in asia? to protect from evil spirits, i.e. something like scarecrows, as far as i understand. i don't know what's the source, or if it is just my personal feeling, that the gargoyle sculptures depicted demons indeed, and were used to remind evil people of the hell that awaits them if they do their evil things. as i said, i may be wrong here.

Hmmm, one thing here though. I we are to put Gargoyles in certain relationship with any town in HoMM4, than we must think in HoMM4 logic. So if Wesley says that Gargoyles should be associated with Warlocks, than they must be associated with Chaos. If they're associated with Devils that means they're associated with Death. And there are two more options: Life - Cathedral protectors (my favourite) or Order - Alchemist creation. I don't see connection between Gargoyles and Nature. In fact they're opposed to the nature, because they're really live. So if we take that Nature is opposed with Order and Death, there we should search for the allegiance of the Gargoyles in HoMM4. And most likely it's gonna be death, because we seen them on several Necro army screenshots. I expect 2nd level death summoning spell that summons Gargoyles.
