Let's Debate
Debate are always fun. They test our ability to properly formulate solid arguments and ideas and defend them while finding flaws in the logic of others. And the team that can do this the best wins.
I was thinking that each week we would have a single debate topic. There would be two teams, where members volunteer which side they prefer to fight for, so teams are very flexible and will change from week to week.
Now I'm looking for ideas about how to judge each debate. My initial idea was that perhaps an impartial member can read through the entire debate and make a judgement. But this seems like a bit too much work for that member.
So I was thinking that perhaps at the conclusion of each debate, I would make a poll in the VW and people vote. Debaters can vote (they dont have to vote for thier side if they think the other team did a much better job at debating) and other people who merely viewed the debates from the sidelines vote too; whoever gets the most votes a week after the conclusion of the debate wins that debate. (If you can think of something better, please suggest it)
Possible debate topics
-Ethics should not interfere with science
-Religion is the main cause of suffering (I've heard a few people suggest this in RL, I dont know if it is debatable though)
-Internet downloading is greatly harming towards the music industry, television industry, gaming industry, etc.
-Some sports should be phased out with the extra funding being diverted towards the Arts (or some other merit good)
-Nuclear power is good/Nuclear power is the way forward
-all drugs should be legalised (I've heard some people in RL suggest this too)
-We could debate about abortion, euthenasia, etc if people want but it might become too religiously orientated.
-range of other topics, guns, death penalty, profanity, and such
If anyone is interested please do post, and if anyone has any debate topics or better ideas on how to judge the debate, please post those too.

Some people who might vote are not serious and may vote only because they like a certain member
And I don't think I'll discuss that much and most certainly few subjects since I already did so in the past and I'm just tired from it

Well, formal debates are always enjoyable. I thought about trying to initiate something like this for a while, but gave up because I decided it would be very time consuming to moderate. You'd certainly have to lay a lot of ground rules to avoid it turning into a quotefest.

Well it seems as though there is some interest.
So then, do people not want a quotefest/quote war at all? What about the occassional quote?
If nobody wants quote wars then I suppose I could input restrictions. But I would like these debates to be as free as possible, without word limits, specific and absolute time limits or posting order and such.
Or do you guys want proper and formal debates? Where there is an opening speaker, a closing speaker, time limits, word limits, kind of like the presidential debates? (personally, I think it would be more organised, but not quite as fun as a free for all)
Please do voice opinions at this stage. I'd like to know what you guys would like to do in relation to the more specific details of the debates.
Baklava: I'll fix it up. But we haven't yet started the debate so perfect logic and justification is not yet required.
TheDeath: "Some people who might vote are not serious and may vote only because they like a certain member"
Well I'd like to think that the people at HC are a little more mature than that.

It should be structured which means the debate shouldn't break down into half a dozen seperate debates about details, like, A is debating with B about a particular aspect of the problem, C with D, E with F. Additionally B is debating with E about another aspect and D does the same with G.
I wouldn't like that.
