Unlockable Content?
Would Heroes 6 be any better or any worse with unlockability?
So thinks me, in my own little mind... I see it as working like this:
Heroes 6 will have certain criteria for unlockable extra faction creatures, heroes, artifacts, and even buildings and spells. Of course, completing the campaign will be one unlock condition, and it would give you some new puny units and a small boost to the hero selection. But, for more advanced items, more would be required...
- Complete a certain Single Player Mission or Multiplayer Co-Op or whatever it is, you'd get a single unlock credit that lets you go to some Library of some cool word to unlock whatever you like. But there will be prereq's for certain unlockables. Like if you're wanting to unlock a new Lich Hero, then you must first unlock his artifact and his special creature and the such.
Some more ideas...
-Complete the "Sar Issus Regalia" Sar Issus the Hero
- Collect all basic artifacts in one game :arrows: Level 6 spells
- Find a Tear of Asha and build the Grail Structure in each faction 3rd Upgrade creatures unlocked
- Equip the Archer's Dream to a Ranger and acquire Absolute Luck unlocks Sylanna's Raiment
Stuff of that sort?

Should be unlocked from Singleplayer or multiplayer but should only be able to use in Multiplayer...

Maybe it should look like THPS, by completuing some scenario you can unclock new shoes fot your hero or short skirts for Blood Furies
Seriously, I find it absurd and not matching the original gameplay at all. In strategy game every strategy is supposed to be avaliable, it's only up to mapmaker what does he give to the players.

Like completing Campaign on Heroic difficulty to unlock all campaign heroes in random maps?
Or beat Dragon Pass within 2 months and unlock a dragon artifact?

I think it should be more fun stuff(alternativ textures to units, funny movies like in Snake Eater, lore, etc. But nothing that will affect the gameplay heavly in numbers).

To be honest, I never liked any kind of unlockable content in any game, so I don't like this idea at all.

The idea is alright imo. Could give new challenges to the players and give some extra replayability factor to it.

@Isabel - Yeah, like that! Things that improve your gameplay the more you play the game! It'll give you bigger and better things to use!
@will - Yeah, that's another thing. It'll give the player more reason to keep playing the game after they complete the campaign.
Some more possibliites -
-Complete the Campagin on Easy level Unlocks unit specific textures
-Complete the Campaing on Hard Level Unlocks Higher Artifacts on all maps
-Complete the Campaign on Heroic Level Unlocks Hero Specific Models
-Kill 500 dragons on one map Unlocks Tier 8 for Dungeon, Sylvan, Fortress, and Necropolis
-Defeat 50 Wizards on one map Unlocks Academy Tier 8
-Defeat 50 Barbarians on one map ....
You get the idea!

I think it should be the other way round= only usable in singleplayer or different unlockings (is that the right word?!) for each of them. Otherwise, I think people who play more singleplayer would have an unfair advantage...aaaand it should NOT be possible to unlock those things with self-created maps (I mean, you could jsut make it easy for yourself...)

Oh, yes, we need to encourage Nival to find cheap ways to lengthen gameplay, so they can excuse themselves if the campaign isn't even half-decent...

You know why I hate unlockings? That they're completely useless after you unlock them - just a waste of memory (since they have to be programmed)
Even a campaign has a replay-ability value (however small it is), but these unlockings become complete obsolete after they're unlocked.

Unlockable content sucks big time
It will only be a matter of time before people will put some config on the net to download it -- why would they download it if not for the fact that they are frustrated and don't like the idea?
it annoys people...

Seconded.
Why should I be forced to do certain things to enjoy the full contents of the game I purchaised and payed for?

Because you want to have a challenge to work for extra features that just add to the flavor, not to the game! Things that give you an edge because you took the time to better your gameplay by focusing your challeges. It gives you incentive to explore all aspects of the game, no matter how demeaning or seemingly worthless. Its not like locking away key components of the game for player's to fight their way through unlock conditions.
I think it will add more diversity and options to unlock some of new features. Ideas:
The Point value system: Upon winning against heroes or completing raids on Dragon Vaults or Vaults of the Magi, you gain points. Then, certain special items and spells can be bought using credit earned in the scenarios and campaigns.
The Certain Condition system: When completing prerequisites, the feature will automatically become unlocked. This is better than the first system due to its straightforwardness, but slightly deficient due to set conditions.
The Scavenger Hunt system: The discovery of certain special items during scenarios allows access to the unlockables. For example, finding a ruby stone unlocks the Ruby Dragon...so on so forth.
Which one would you prefer, if any?

I think that unlockable content shouldn't affect gameplay.
Such as gaining the cinematics so you don't have to replay missions or plot overviews for the game...
prehaps little ego things for playing online like a crown.
Unlockable content should never affect gameplay...
Look what happened to AOE III... to be competetive online you need a level 40 city...

Gaah, no, it burns, it buuurns!
Seriously, this isn't a good idea, as Alc said, you've already payed for the whole game, there should be no reason you have to do a particular thing with it to unlock a feature.

What's the problem exactly? This idea has been used in many games before so what would the problem be here? I mean with many games as you progress you might unlock something, like a new gun to help you a bit more or perhaps some extra levels. I don't know why most people think it is a bad idea when it works quite well most of the time in other games.
If you buy a game and then have to try and unlock something then it also adds a challenge factor to it as well since you will probably need to do a few things before you could unlock that particular thing, and it gives more depth to the game.

The problem is that the feature either isn't in the normal game, which I object to, because I've already paid for it, or it 'is' in the normal game, at which point this thread is redundant, unless it's about limiting a new feature, although this could probably be done with Events, Quest Guards and Pandora's Boxes (do you still get the boxes?) in any case.
About the one exception I see to this rule is fog-of war, which IMO has never been done properly in the HoMM games.
