I prefer open maps because a lot of why I like playing online is to interact with my opponent, but I played a game on HG2 and got my but kicked bad.  So I decided to try it solo and see if maybe actually hitting my utopia might have helped.  Sure wish that game had been multi, got armageddons blade and Titans cuirias from a 30k utopia.  Seems to me like arm blade is just too strong an artifact for a multiplayer game, and it isn't a combo artifact.
I think my favourite map so far is Boomerang because I almost won on it twice.  Even though it does seem unbalanced to reds favor a little.

Tristan you' had better prepare yourself when you are gonna play a ToH map. Most of these guys/girls could kill u on them blindfolded. Play the map a few times with the editor open and try out different strategies. Or do what Slava did....ask some veterans for strategies for a map.

Better yet .. play random.
That way only knowledge of the templates will help your opponent (besides skill and luck of course)!@

toh & Randoms

I would suggest that if your a new random map player in toh that you avoid the named templates.  Most random vets know those templates inside and out.  If one comes up ask for a restart.

There are some vets I know that have notes for all of the other templates they have played too, so be warned.  Just trying to give a friendly word of advice.

hehe, want interaction with opponent?

try HotSpot ... where everyday is a constant battle.

after you play that map, you'll be grateful to NOT fight your opponent for the first FIVE weeks!

(all people either love that map or hate it.  As for me, I'm scared of that map.  It's too intense.)

I did look at hot spot in the editor, and it seemed like I might like it, shoot I could do no better than lose faster.  I thought you (Wiggy_wam) made a map similar, with a mine area conected by one way liths.  sure makes for some interesting scout battles I would think

dw is not routine map , I m serious . Its just unbalanced stupid map done by mapmaker who did not know how to remove artefacts btw wiggy aka blub lover do you know that on dw there are many ways to achieve victory :
1 island->quest->utopia->2nd utopia ->siege
2 attack while main army of opponent went for quest
3 use 1st day rush as red on day 8 if your main hero is fast  or you are tower
4 attack in any time after you got good spell from guild

Hehe, you forgot 5:
5.Start with Dungeon

Cuz Solmyr gets lots of kewl spells from gild, and he can see whats going on.

btw, titans are kewl, but Solmyr is the kewlest!

I like, RANDOMS best, and open maps too. Some of the closed maps are not so bad either ...

Well my favs gotta be open maps.
I still like BfH alot, prolly coz alot of my best games have been on that map. Contrary to many ppl`s belief it doesnt have to be a rush map. Especially when both players know it well.
Boomerang is great aswell, but as Haile mentioned it needs an update, red has way to big an advantage there.
Warring Kingdoms and Fighting for turf is 2 great open maps ppl tend to forget. I dont know why, as most ppl tend to say that the problem with open maps is rushing. Well here u go Both maps are harder to rush than BfH, though Warring Kingdoms is still as easily rushed as boomerang. The nice feature off that map, is 2 red wood observatories which makes rushing alot harder, or at least u get a fair warning
Closed maps are somewhat harder to rate imho.
But I kinda like Giant war and Invader of the newer ones.
SD3 is also good.
But of the semiclosed maps, the Battle for Power series is often forgotten, I like them U get time to build hard to rush, but still a good deal of scout battles.
Damn Im getting serious in my ole age
