Keeping the game interesting
I don't know about you guys, but for me, the game essentially goes out the window after I've beaten the campaign and played a few Skirmishes. Which is why I've been brainstorming some ideas that might keep players from getting bored of it. Here is what I came up with:
Firstly, let me just point out what makes the game boring for me. It's the early game. It seems that every time I open the .exe file to play TOE, I have the late game in mind but I always neglect to anticipate the boring minutes or hours of early game. The fact is, this game is no RTS, and it takes extremely long for any one skirmish to properly develop. But this isn't something you can get rid of, is it? I mean you can't just skip to the middle or late game effectively unless you've been making a bunch of save files.
Instead, my first idea was one that has come up frequently in games. There is always the "core" part of the game, but then there is usually, especially in newer games, the "external RPG" portion, as I will call it. Look at Call of Duty 4. People would get bored of playing online if not for the fact that they get something from it, more weapons and perks and so on...
I propose a similar concept in Single Player, and essentially the same thing in Multiplayer, though it wouldn't be the same file as the SP one, obviously, because then people would just cheat in SP and get bonuses in MP.
But basically, imagine if for every enemy that YOU defeat in Easy, you get 1 point, 2 points for Normal and so on. Or maybe some alternative, where you get x amount of points for completing an objective, or extra points for getting the grail.
Then would come the external RPG part. This is where I essentially got stuck...I mean how could this effectively be put to use? Well I came up with a few things:
1) All selected bonuses affect the faction as a whole. That is, every hero benefits. In this case bonuses would be things like:
+0.5% EXP gain
+1 to a random primary stat at start of level
Essentially similar to the starting bonuses we get to pick, except now, you'd have to earn them. Then when you reach Level 100 in the external RPG factor, you'd have the better, but not OD, things to choose from such as:
+500 gold income every day
+10 upgraded Tier 2 unit to Primary Hero at the start of scenario
Of course there would be a limit. Let's call them LPs, Limit Points. This way you wouldn't have every upgrade, but you'd have fun experimenting.
And what happens at Level 100? Not the same thing as in COD4, I'm not a total thief...
At Level 100, you'd be able to fight for one more Level Up, I guess Level 100+. Then each faction gets one nice special, similar to the Ultimate Skill of each faction. So your primary hero in Haven would start off with an ability like:
-All units under Hero control always have at least +1 moral.
2) If the factor was hero specific, things would be made a little easier. You'd be able to spend you "LPs" customizing individual heroes, including stats you wouldn't normally see, such as:
-Chance of showing up in Tavern
-Chance of getting a particular Primary Skill increase (you'd be able to fiddle around with that)
-Chances of getting a particular Secondary Skill. Admit it, that is a must.
Soooo...what do you guys think?

I haven't even played the campaigns yet, and I've had the game and both expansions since first release date.
Sorry if that's not very constructive, just to make my voice heart that there are some of us to whom the campaigns are a less important part of the game.

Dunno about you, but whenever I was bored in Heroes 3 and just wanted the mid-game to come quicker, I'd cheat. I imagine a similar system would be less cumbersome in the next game.

Well of course cheating always keeps the game fun. In fact that's the only reason I still play it. If this idea was brought up before, I apologize, I haven't been on the forum in a while and wasn't exactly sure what the appropriate thing to search for was.
But still, I would think it would at the very least make the game more interesting, in any case keep some of us like myself from using cheats for that much longer.

Maybe there ought to just be a setting when you start the map? The progression of your town, the strength of your starting heroes, and the amount of the map that is open and controlled by you would be directly determined by this bar. So if you don't want to trouble yourself with creeping you set the value to "late-game" and both sides will start out with strong heroes, the local mines, and tier-seven units.

Personally I find Heroes games to have near-infinite replay value. Both III and V have RMGs available which helps and III also had a staggering amount of scenarios and campaigns, while V has quite a few itself.
I don't know, but I always felt these games had a lot more replay value then many of the RTSs out there, and I'd be a bit leery of something like unlockable content. Early game can still be interesting if you're clearing entire stacks of zombies with one sprite (H3 analogy) or some such.
