mvass, there's a difference between being poor because of being lazy and being poor because of bad luck. For the first case, I'm completely against helping them, but for the second it's another story.

If I find someone poor person living in a poor house I blame him first, and see if he's in this situation because of being lazy. If he's not lazy but didn't have much luck in life, and never had good opportunities, then of course I'll understand his problems and would like him to be helped. However, even in this case I wouldn't go sentimental. I'm not much of a soft-hearted, even when people die I very rarely go emotional, and only if it was someone who I truly cared about; but I do admit that it is very unfortunate for someone to die, I'm not that evil to say: "Heck, so what?"

Joonas has described Finnish politics. Now would someone like to describe their own country's politics? I'll add the US's later.

Edit: Started on US politics section.

Asheera:
I understand what you're saying, and I partially agree. And I wouldn't say "Heck, so what?" either. I would try to find the best way to prevent such things. And I think capitalism is the best way to do it.

The principal thought of liberalism isn't to keep the rich people rich and the poor people poor. It is to provide a job to everyone, so they can support themselves and no longer depend on society...

Of course, this is classical liberalism and before the time of socialism.

Yes, although I would phrase that somewhat differently: liberalism is about giving people the ability to obtain jobs.

But, of course, that's classical liberalism.
