Poll Question:
Vanilla or..

At the risk of starting a arguement..I am curious about something.  Do you prefer your games Vanilla (no cheat codes, mods, etc) or not?  If you do use cheat codes and mods..when do you?  Before you beat the game to learn the game, or after to see what all you can do?

Sometimes I play a game pure vanilla..other times to learn it I use cheat codes or walkthroughs, then do it on my own once learned.

Sometimes I use cheats/walkthroughs after I beat the game..to get everything I missed..what about you?

Edit : Note voting all cheats does not mean you use them all, just that you use at least one at all times.

Games like Kotor and Jedi Knight, no mods nor cheat. Unless going online.
For Morrowind its stawrberry
For however Oblivion and F3, they need mods(F3 only needed a heavy interface fix in comparision to Oblivion whom are litteraly unplayable without modzzzz).
It depends on the game.

So you voted Ham Sandwich?  Yeah, I agree.  Sometimes things just need modified..others they are perfect.

Great, a thread to flame the lamers who use cheats Depends on the game I'd say. If it's new and worthwhile I want to beat it on my own even if that takes several days of getting stuck as was the case with syberia 2. However if the game's design is retarded as in the case of paradise where most things made no sense I happily used the walkthrough and soon realized that it was better that I did not waste my time on that abomination of a game.. Generally I avoid walkthroughs and cheats are only after I have finished the game for the fun of it. If you try them before then you don't do the game justice.

I don't understand all the options...
I usually play without cheats / walkthroughs (unless it's gta, it's more fun to drive the tank than to do the missions )
and I'm very interested in users created contents (especially maps on multiplayer FPS)

I like to play the game original at first, and then perhaps use cheats and mods for another experience.

And I haven't used a walkthrough in my entire life.

Didn't play them

For some reason I don't like the strategy-game campaigns at all. I played only the Starcraft and Tiberian Sun ones and I was getting pretty bored. I don't know, probably it was the easy difficulty, but for some reason I don't enjoy the RTS/TBS campaigns at all.

I don't know if Spellforce counts as a RTS game (since it's half RTS half RPG) but that one was an exception and I enjoyed the campaign.

Strawberry sandwich would be nice.

I tend to play a game without cheats/mods (usually event without patches ), And after I have beaten the game I mod/cheat it.

I often enjoy Vanilla the most, however after a certain amount of time I like to flavour it up with mods....

I try to stay out of the "cheating zone" as much as possible. (Cheating on every single game as a kid lost its charm after a while )

Strawberry!!!Cheating takes out all the fun from the game.Even GTA is fun without cheating, but once you beat it then its borig and as Fauch mentioned its more fun to ride a tank then do all boring missions again. As for Heroes3 missions they are soo boring that cheating(mission complete) isnt prevented.Heroes 5 are better.

Heroes 2 had some good fun campaign missions. (not the expansion)

I'm a vanilla guy.  Mod stuff for games like Oblivion you have to read a book to get them all to work right.

How are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, rocky road and ham sadwich supposed to represent different approaches on cheating and modding in computer games? Sounds more like some dumb ice cream flavour poll in the VW...

[/semioff-topic]

I guess that playing with mods is like playing a game while doing some hallucenogenic drugs and placing your monitor upside down... Not my kind of thing really.

Cheating to beat a game is understandable if the game a bad level & mission desing (maybe even bad overall desing) that you don't want to bother playing through and just want to see how it ends, but otherwise I think it is just stupid.

P.S. The mission desing was **** in HoM&M5. Somehow it was worse than in the earlier games even though the objectives and other stuff were exactly the same as in the earlier games (get grail, capture building, defeat hero, defeat wandering monsters, etc.)

I Love Rocky Road!

On-topic:
In 90% of the cases I prefer to play pure vanilla, the way it's meant to be played. It's just more fun for me to do it all myself.

However, there are of course some exceptions like GTA that's much more fun with cheats and some adventure games that get waaay too confusing from time to time and are nearly impossible without a walkthrough.

I don't play too many PC games anymore.  Now that I think about it, I haven't really played any games lately except for a couple of Mortal Kombat games.

Either way, I don't use cheat codes on games until after I've played through them and so far the only game I've used cheats on was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.  I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to drive around in a tank.

I don't really use walkthroughs too often either.  I think the last game I used a walkthrough on was FF Tactics Advance after I had played through it once.  I played it again with the walkthrough so I could acquire a weapon that you only get if you place the map pieces a certain way.

They count but it's still strawberry, because I play with mods only after I play the game normally and understand it first.
