splitting up stacks
I got myself wondering (again). I wonder do you split up your units equally over all heroes, or do you have just one hero running back and forth you castle, with all the units? Personally I always use only one strong hero, 'cause if I would run upon a strong hero, I'd definetly lose without one.

A combo of the two
Usually I have a main heroe and a lot of weaker heroes to make heroes chains. In XL maps I sometimes have two mains, and sometimes even three mains, but by this time I usually have town portal so I don't need the chain.

I only use one hero. Even when I play XL maps, I just power that hero up with everything I have and give him logistics, movement speed artifacts, and other stuff.

Yes, I use only one hero. But when the hero is very far from the town, I may hire another hero to bring him creatures.

I usually have one strong hero, but after he's strong enough he's going to a C&C campaign, so if I see ANY enemy he can't get I first buy all the troops I can in the closest town to the enemy, and if I have some money left I hire a hero. If the enemy got close enough to the castle with the hero, and I'm sure that I'll win I attack him, get exp. and then go with that hero somwhere near the castle to visit all of the scill giving objects and stuff. Then I decide whenether I will put him in the castle or he'll go to adventure himself.

Of course this totally depens on the map....let's assume XL.
I'll have two - three heroes in the first week (if not playing on impossible - depends on the richness of the map). Usually I'll just equip the scouts with all slots filled with just a few creatures (should I run into the enemy I can alsways retreat and keep the artifacts). This also depends on how well stuff (mines, arties are guarded).
Are they well guarded it might be forced to equip scouts with more creatures. As you can see there isn't A single good tactic it all depends on thing that depend on other things ... LOL
Usually I'll end up with 8 hero's..
Let's now hear some serious questions!@

usually I make one or two main armies
I will make one army of my creatures week one, (this is for most maps, but varies) and take my main goals, passing the force to several heroes (i.e. chaining) so that I can get several things in one turn.
In week 2 or 3 I usually try to give my "main" hero a few High lvl 7 creatures so they can do what they need to get built up and get exp, while using the secondary force for scouts to pass between each other and clear arts and other goals out.

Fighting big fights with the Main and lesser with other heroes. Don't walk much more than a single step for reaching a 300 exp Fight, if I can kill it with another hero as easy. (Not if I am playing Necro)

I think Zud explained how most top players do in his post, u should get 6-8 heroes whom u can chain your troops with. Since u can use your troops in how many fights u want as long (if they not die that is)as the heroes u use have Movement points left to go to this fights u should use this. By chaining your troops u can "clear" larger areas much faster than u can do if u run back and forward with one hero.
And since speed is almost everything in this game you must learn these things if u want to get "really good".
My advice: play against a really good player and take saves every day, by doing this u will see where he moved his heroes and by that u also see what he/she have done during he/she´s turn. You will learn alot from this, another even better way is to play allied with one of those players since u see their every move by doing that.
Then u should practise this in other online games or just vs the computer.
Good luck!

One big hero?
Partly depends on distribution of Town types - i focus all devolopment (other than cash) on the first main town, then develop a satellite of the same type which produces unimproved creatures that i can run across to upgrade (brilliant with Town Portal). So i focus on boosting one good hero.
If i have lots of gold & take a developed town of another
type, then i will start building up a second hero with that towns creatures.

I will have just one super army in my best hero, and with my
other heroes I will have normal armies for conquering mines, but it still depends on the map.
