Warhammer Online
Some pals convinced me to start playing (though I thought it was a travesty to turn the Warhammer world into an MMO) and to my amazement it was quite different from WoW - better, that is.
Of course, that is just my opinion (please don't shoot me Xerox), and WoW had far more time to brush and polish everything, but for the first vanilla version it looks great.
Some stuff I noticed.
The game focuses far more on PvP than WoW does. It is also far more dynamic, you can engage in player vs player combat from lvl 1. PvE is still present, of course; far from neglected. But PvP is essential - you even have two different kinds of leveling (Experience - classic XP, and Renown - which is gained only by killing enemy players). Renown allows you better equipment - which, on the other hand, isn't as powerful as in WoW; you depend on it, of course, but you depend far more on your playing skill.
A dynamic realm versus realm system is included, which allows for the dynamic conquering of entire cities up to, theoretically, the enemy capital. I've participated in a few sieges (defending, mostly) and it's fun as hell. You can buy, make and use canons, boiling oil, ballistas, battering rams etc, and it feels like some sort of a minigame (wind, aiming etc. taken into account). Orcs can even launch themselves from catapults. Kinda fun, and it adds to the general feel of the game.
The general storyline is good, though I - as a traditional Warhammer fan - don't really consider it canon. Even some quests are sort of fun and have a story of their own, which is a travesty in the MMO genre (there's also a new system of public quests which everyone can engage at the same time). 30 years of lorecrafting leave a deep mark upon the general atmosphere of the game - you're aware that you can't know everything about the entire world in just about an hour of reading.
There aren't as many people playing as in WoW. True, some servers have "medium" population, but that's it - none reaches the "high" mark, and some other servers are even shutting down. As my friend said: "The game is deeper, more skill-oriented, more complex and less life-destroying than WoW. That's why more people will play WoW."
Of course, even though there isn't much bugs around, especially for an MMO that was practically just released, there's still the general feeling that the game could use some polishing. I can't put my finger on it, but there's some stuff that could be fixed, brushed or improved.
I'm playing on a friend's account, but there's still the irritating issue of monthly payment. I'm not planning on playing it for too long, I'm even using the account of a friend who's inactive, but it still kinda goes against my principles.
Any opinions? Anyone played it, or was interested? Or just heard some stories about it?
I'm no MMO freak but it can be kinda fun when you gather up the pals.

*shoot*
My wave of hate is soon comming!
No, but actualy I was interested in trying it after getting tired of WoW and trying out different MMOs.
I tried out the LOTRO trial but the community was so low, I barely saw any players. The graphics were beautiful, but the enviroments were boring and everything looked the same.
The UI was a rip-off from WoW but made a thousand times more messy and ugly.
I returned to WoW after three days.
I wanted to try out Warhammer Online too, but I dont know if there is any 10 day trial.

Don't worry Bak, if Xerox tries anything funny i'll pulverize him with
[Baseball Bat of Nolifer Smashing
One-Hand
Mace
DMG: 750-999(655 damage per second)
+1000 stamina
+1000 agility
Equip: +2000 Attack Power against Nolifers
Equip: +100 Energy
Chance on Hit: Reduces nolifers attack power to 0 for 6 months
Use: Instantly kills a Nolifer. The nolifer gains a Ressurection Sickness for a month.
Cooldown: 3 days
(NOTE: Blizzard removed this weapon from the game due to fear of suiciding nolifers)
I personally liked WAR. I like skill orientated games(thats why i played Guild Wars) massive PvP rocks too. But i've kinda lack Undead races. Hope they will be added someday. The games has bugs, but fortunately it ruins the game less unlike in Age of Conan.
Overall its a great game, and one of more serious concurents to WoW(like GW is lol)

Well, there are two undead factions in the Warhammer world, Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings, so I guess chances are they'll be added at some point in the future...
If it was up to me, I'd break conventional clichees by joining the Tomb Kings (who are generally neutral anyway) with the Order side. It could be possible to make it so in the storyline, and it would be fun to see the undead as good guys. Maybe an undead expansion, which would add Tomb Kings to the Order side and Vampire Counts to Destruction.
But I suppose that the Skaven and Lizardmen will probably be the next races, if an expansion comes out.

Skaven huh? Can you say "Ratman madness!"? The only thing i like from them are the Rat Ogres and those poison grenade throwers(whatever their name is) Although their assassins rock too.
When it comes to undead of Warhammer i'd pick Vampires. Tomb Kings are cool but i like Vampires more
Are Lizardmen are going to be in Order side? Kinda hard for me to connect them to it...

I would have given it a try (especially after reading your short summary Bak), if not for the monthly fee.

Same here. $15 a month (on top of the initial purchase) to play one MMORPG when there are so many other great games out there isn't worth it in my book.

Quote: Are Lizardmen are going to be in Order side? Kinda hard for me to connect them to it...
Why? They're constantly fighting the Dark Elves. Sure, they're not exactly in best relations with the Empire, but then again the Dwarfs killed the High Elven king once and stole his crown, and they're allied now.
Yes, the monthly fee is the greatest problem with the game. I agree wholeheartedly. But that's the problem with all mainstream MMOs... :\
Maybe they'll cut the fee if they lose enough players. Who knows.

Tried it.
Waste of money. It just does not hook you up like other MMOs do. Taking WoW out of the question, let's just say Lotro is ten times better.
The only thing that stands out in Warhammer is the PvP, which STILL needs some polishing.

@Baklava: i wasn't interested i Warhammer lore until recently. So it was hard to see how scaly, spiny, fangy and lizardly creatures could be at the good side.

@Doom
Meh. Opinions differ.
But I might get bored with it soon too. Who knows. I'm already playing far less than a week ago.
@Kip
Well there are no clear good guys in the Warhammer world really... Or, rather, there's very few of them. There are mostly just greater and lesser evils.

Nice, I might test it although im very busy with WoW at the moment.
I wonder if the game is balanced in PvE, since there are so many classes?
