When my brother and I got my mom to play H3 once, she picked a Tower town to start because she liked the scenery on the Advanced Settings screen. While we were playing, she looked at the creatures card and decided she wanted unicorns. I had to explain that she could not build those in a Tower; she needed a Rampart. By a stroke of luck, there happened to be a neutral Rampart just down the road from her Tower. I had to convince her to buy her nagas to get it (they had too many swords for her taste), and she was reluctant to kill the defending elves, but she ended up victorious. She then told me to build directly to unicorns. She didn't want to build anything unless it was a step towards unicorns. Why? She just really likes unicorns. If that's not "girl" playing, I don't know what is.
Edit: For the record, my own preferences are Tower and Necropolis.
