Trogdolytes = Cave-men or Insectoid?
I dont get what a Trogdolyte is.
Is it a caveman or a cave-dwelling insectoid or is it a WoW-nerd Xerox?
They looked very insect for me in H3 and H4. Maybe repitilian.

The term's coined from Greek words "trogle" (cave, hole) + "dyein" (to enter). So it sort of means "caveman".
Since there's no according creature in mythology, every author interprets them as they want.  From blind, squishy things of H3 to those lizardmendudes of DnD.

Nah, they weren't insectoids. They had no eyes
Heroes III-IV states they can "see" through a sort of infra-red heat seeking sense, combined with "sound-vision", like bats.

Well, as others have said 'Troglodyte' technically means 'caveman', but 'men' they're obviously not. DnD and WoW have them down as lizardlike, but their appearance in those sources id different from their appearance in Heroes. All in all, I'd suggest that 'our' troglodytes are somewhere between amphibians and reptiles, their appearance is a little too 'bloated' for me to characterise them as true reptiles, but I also doubt they would be full amphibians living underground.

I always thought the old universe Trogdolytes was Insectoids, guess I was wrong then.

Maybe, maybe not. I any case, here's a big version of the H4 troll from Celestial Heavens, make up your own mind about its lineage.
Personally I'm still hovering between amphibious and reptilian.

If you study the artwork of H4 long enough, you can get to the conclusion that Behemoths are mutated gorillas and that Unicorns are mutated Gay Pride Parades. So I don't know how reliable H4 is for that matter.
They could've been some sub-breed of humans, changed by life in perpetual darkness and moist, shadowy, vile conditions of the Dungeon but that can't explain the tails. So I don't know. Maybe they are some sort of reptiles, maybe not.

I *think* that Troglodytes are some distant cousins of the humanoid cavemen. You know, just a different attempt of evolution. So it would make sense for them living in caves and it even would make sense of them being amphibian since every life evolved from them.

Don't forget that the Heroes III Warlocks inspired the Heroes V Wizards - they both enjoy crosbreeding. Guess how Minotaurs came about  So it's not impossible that Troglodytes are part-human part-frogthing, or something, but I think it's a bit more likely that they were just dwelling there in the tunnels before Warlocks ever came along.

So many versions...
...my own thoughts on troglodytes, from my subterranean/insectoid faction:
The Wizard Farouk Al-Jiza travelled most of the known world to get specimens on which he could experiment. After he heard of the pact Tuidhana made with a Faceless he travelled to her kingdom and managed to sample something of that surviving eldest. Using this (tears? blood? toenails? nobody knows) and combining it with imp blood and large subterranean fungi he created the blind troglodytes in 545 YSD.
So... they're basically faceless, sentient mushrooms
