Sure I like it. I spent lunch at school just today discussing that stuff with some people. The person I was against wouldn't use reason, and would just change his words around to make no sense, very difficult.
I probably wouldn't have stayed at HC so long if it wasn't for the politics, history, etc. threads. So sure I like it. PH is a good guy to go up against, I enjoy it. Or I enjoy stress...one of the two.

You did say no matter what...
If I could have anything, I would ask for one second chance, valid for use whenever I want, be it past, present, or future. The ability to completely remedy one mistake of my choosing would be more valuable to me than any material thing I could ever get for Christmas. It'll never happen, but it's a nice dream.
Next question is to the first taker. What is your earliest memory that has survived until now?

Well jeeze.
Let's see how do I put this?
I guess in this Community I am pretty much a moderate, although my ultra-conservative family thinks I'm a flaming liberal. Both the men you are talking about are so intelligent, and develop their arguments so well, (except for a few times when they've sniped at one another), that I respect them both tremendously.
Wolfman is much more conservative than I am, but that doesn't stop me from both appreciating and even agreeing with his points much of the time. He will be a person to watch over the next twenty years as I think you will see him go far and perhaps achieve some visibility in the real world.
Private Hudson could do the same if he were only so inclined. He is a good personal friend to me and has been from the get-go. I think one of the reasons we gravitated to one another is because he so eloquently expresses points of view that are so similar to mine most of the time. So from an overall perspective I would have to say it's PH that I agree with more often.
As far as being "politically correct," well, I think that term is misleading. There is no true correctness in politics, just different social and economic theories. The term can't be claimed without claiming that someone else is "incorrect." When you're talking about theories, correctness doesn't seem to be part of the picture. So I guess I don't think any of us is "politically correct."
Thanks for asking Acu, and Happy New Year to you.

What's your New Year's Resolution?

I don't really make New Year's Resolutions. I'm not sure how to answer that. I always try to make myself better, but making a resolution isn't going to make it happen. So I always try to make myself better, not just around New Years. I hope that was an ok answer.

I'm not in this thread, I resigned Therefore I will answer but have no intention of answering any further ones or asking.
Hard to say, Churchill gets a lot of credit for his early realisation of the menace of Hitler and being the perfect man for the role of running the UK in WWII. The war was as much his finest hour as it was ours. He also had an excellent way with words and charisma by the bucketload. He also recognised the threat of Stalin throughout the war, but had enough sense to realise that Russia was vital to victory and took steps not to antagonise them throughout the war. Then again he totally screwed up Gallipoli during WWI and nearly as badly the African/Balkan campaign in WWII.
A good comparison is with Lincoln who was also very charismatic and had a very eloquent way with words. His gettysburg Address is a good anthem for necessary conflict and a excellent tribute for fallen soldiers. I personally think his own morals were compromised by the reality of the politics of that era, but his decent morality and sense of justice ring through clearly. If he had a fault it was in his consistently bad choices for command in the early war years and his constant interference in campaigns when he himself knew almost nothing of millitary matters which lead to some of the disasterous campaigns and battles of the war through Generals doing anything as long as it got Lincoln off their back. I think had he lived the reconcilliation with the south would have been far less troblesome.
All leaders have their faults and abilities. Ghandi or similar would have been a good choice, but I pick on their affect on the world at the end of the day. Ghandi's form of non-violence may have been brave and well performed, but was it more important than the man who was the major part of stopping Hitler? If I had to choose from those 2 I mentioned above I would choose Churchill. His lone stand against his own party and later his lone leadership against the might of Hitler was vital to the survival of Democracy in the Western half of Europe. He stood alone and defied logic and reasoning. Lincoln comes a close second, but the way had been trod before, emancipation was becoming more and more normal by his time, other countries had lead the way. I admire Lincoln for taking the bull by the horns and ending slavery in the USA, but I don't personally consider the effect of this to have been as essential as stopping Hitler and also stalling Stalin to some extent. The only close thing to this is to preserve the Union as a whole entity, but given the situation between north and south the chance of Northern victory was always high.

Well, a tough one, but I'll have to agree with PH on Churchill for all the same reasons. Is that an acceptable answer?
My second choice, although unpopular no doubt, is Hitler. His style of leadership was terrible, his leading ability was terrible, but the part that gets me was his speaking ability. It was amazing, to rally the German people like that in the begining, absolutly stunning. I don't agree with Hitler's tactics, but he was an amazing person, when you look at his accomplishments.
EDIT: Whoops no question! To anyone, who is your favorite singer/band?
What a pathetic question...

Oh dear, Acu, what manner of mischief are you trying to draw me into?!?!?! LOL!!!!
I'd have to say it's an even draw. But I have a few more pet favorites whom I won't mention right off; they probably already know who they are.
PH is more like me than practically anyone at HC but he is much more informed. He over-writes like I do, which only endears me to him more. He was the first victim of my stalking behavior here at HC, and the primary reason I became a member (it was one of his posts I first stumbled across all those months ago).
Wolfman is about ten years younger than PH (sorry you two for any revealed secrets there) and I have always admired extreme intelligence in anyone. I admire it greatly in Wolfman who is (well, compared to me) just a newb on this planet. I suspect he will age well, and become more moderate as he grows, because he is so intelligent and capable of free-forming his arguments. Again, while I disagree with much of what he says, he formulates his arguements on those points I disagree with in such a manner that I frequently find myself pursing my lips and nodding in concession as I read. I may still conclude I disagree, but he makes me think getting there at least!
He sorta reminds me of my dad. Just as there are good and bad liberal debators, there are good and bad conservative debators. These two are in the tops of their ranks as far as I am concerned (again, except when they snipe at one another).
P.S. Wolfman, Hitler crossed my mind too when that question was posed. I mean notability in leadership can be achieved many ways. And his pathology was indeed notable, in many ways....
Acu, if/when you go back to school, what are the major fields of study you have considered and why? What idea of a life proffession most makes you tick?
