HoMM5, HoF or ToE? Where to start?

hi all,

I'm new to HoMM5 and it's expansions. I played HoMM3 for years (and so have high expectaions!)

Question is, where should I start?
Is it worth playing these in order of release date? Or just skip to the latest, ie. ToE?
It seems that ToE is rated as the best, but should I still play to others?

Start with Tribes of the East.  TotE has all of HoF's content except the HoF campaigns, which you can download legally for TotE anyway.

Not only start with TotE but buy only TotE, not much point for the others for the reasons Ceph said.

If you already got the gold edition you can play through the original campaigns (without the tribes alternate upgrades)...then do the HoF ones...

If you just want skirmish maps you may as well use tribes because it has the most buildings and neutrals etc.

Don't forget to patch the games before starting.

There are two ways i would say:

The first path you start playing ToTE and enjoy the full arsenal of artifacts, skills and factions. It has less bugs and improved balance and gameplay more options and ex. overall i think it the best of all H5's.

The second path you start with H5 then you go to HoF and finnaly to ToTE. In this way you can play the campiagns with original skills sets, artifacts and factions. If you will complete this game(h5 the first part) then moving to the next addon will give you something fresh & will force you to rethink previous strategies. In this way you will learn more and expierience more then just go for the finnal version. This way grants you longer pleasure and satisfaction until you will learn all that you need to know about the game to start Duels or thinking about your own vision of H6 or moded H5. Maybe you will even discovery something new and fresh who knows...

thanks for the advice.  I'm still waiting (impatiently) for the game to arrive in the post.

When I played HoMM3 (to death) I preferred the random map generator to the campaigns. But I think campaigns are good for getting to know a game and each city type.

Can you play the H5 campaigns with the Tribes upgrades?

They probably have fixed most of them by now, but the original H5 was very buggy.  Was annoying as heck.  Seemed they would fix one bug and 10 would take it's place.  Overall though I enjoyed ToTE the most of the 3.  Just wish it would play on my poor laptop.

I thought I'd reply here instead of openning a new topic

I played heroes from I-IV until I quit gaming in general

I managed to get two of my friends to try out H5, so it got me back again in the game!

They have no prior experience in heroes, so should I have them start from H5 original and follow the sequence? or ToE directly?

As for me, I'd rather start with balanced skill set of ToE as well as alternate upgrades, cavanas and so many features ToE offers -.- but are campaigns challenging & worth playing, considering that I'm not a newbie lol?

I'm nearly done with Haven campaign in original, and boy is it easy? it is too boring ~.~

So far I like V... I didn't like the fact that Nival released a copy-paste of III (back then when beta came) as I did like IV.. but now that I played it a bit & read about it.. it does offer somewhat decent enough new content (e.g. skill system, initiative) that makes it different from III.. I still have to work my head around H3-like retaliation system lol

I'm a bit late coming to V lol but hey I couldn't sleep the past few days and spent most of my hours at work reading & thinking of strategies, comparing faction creatures lol

I guess after playing heroes for more than 10 years it is kinda in my blood now lol I hate the fact I no longer have luxury of spending hours on it.. but oh well (no I'm not an old fart )

Forget the previous ones, they had different skill system and this will mess you up As you said the original H5 campaigns are boring(and still buggy after so many patches I hear..), maybe not all but you won't miss much. Good to see you still have it in you And looking forward to seeing your insights in the game.

Thanks! I'll start with ToE then

What about my friends? Get them started on "single maps"? How do I teach them the game? And by that I don't mean the mechanics and info on every single thing that exists in the game.. but more on how to play the game and what is it about.

One of them is used to strategy/tactics games so he'll pick up fast... but the other one is .. out of it lol... He thought that he'd start with a hero and he'll have it for the rest of the game as if it was an rpg game.. I had to explain to him that no.. this is a map/campaign-oriented game which is strategy-based rather than RPG.

Any suggestions?

Ok, I should really go to bed now lol

Actually I was thinking to start a thread on learning to play multiplayer these days. My suggestion for now is start playing multiplayer maps to get a feel of the game, see how towns are built, how to move in the adventure map, test the neutrals' strength etc. Don't start with the tote campaign, it is meant for players that already know how to play H5 well.

yeah I heard the campaigns are ridiculously hard.

Thanks for the advice, I'll make my friends install expansion & start with multiplayer maps.

On that, are HoF single/multiplayer maps playable in tote? is it even worth installing HoF or should I just install tote for them only & the 1 patch released for them?

I know that the hof and h5 campaigns are available for tote somewhere.. Actually disregard what I said about hard difficulty, try normal first. Better to treat the game is training before you learn its finer points, I sometimes forget that it took me some time till I figured out the AI's patterns in hard. On that note ubi maps suck, I suggest trying some of those.

Personally I like the giants, rat race, mastermind, sidekick, ability, dragon's cape, heritage of Deleb, master of disguise, dragon hill.

I see, I think we still have to play original maps especially for my friends in order to learn 1st before we play better maps so that they can apprecaite them.
Thanks for the link! I'll check it out. I need to check multiplayer guide & see if we can play over the internet without ubi key.

I guess I have to teach them the game myself. They miss on basic tactics like not moving shooters, and over-splitting their units which may not seem obvious at early game but at mid/end game you wouldn't normally want to do that (except for few occaisons like paladins/priests)

I think i have seen a thread where it explains how to download campaigns in tote legally, I'll try to find it.

Yah thanks a lot!

It took me a bit of an effort to find this.

Why not add this question since it is commonly asked in the FAQ?

That tote is good enough & you can download the campaigns and even single maps

Just a suggestion.

Thanks for all the advice! I've gotten into ToE campaigns. Up to the 3rd one - and pleased to see "hard" is actually slightly challenging. It's all very addictive!  A lot like Homm3, but different enough to be interesting (and improved!?)

Now, gotta keep this short, the OrangePlayer has breached the Golem boarder guards!
