RPG quests ideas, anyone?

This topic is only temporary.

What would you like to complete as custom quest in a RPG adventure? ERM can script almost anything, from custom battles to multiple paths or/and  ends quests.

If your ideas are interesting I will script them and give you credit for having the idea.

So far Vlaad proposed and all accepted:

1. Free and escort a princess/character from a prison, but she turns out to be old and ugly... so no prize until you take her to the "fountain of youth", where she changes her portrait... BUT you are not told what to do.

2. Puzzle that can be completed only in time (uncover the conspiracy to assassinate the king)

3. Chained quests, preferably with opposite outcomes based on the player's choices (join the thieves guild, then decide to destroy them or become the leader)

I had an idea I never managed to make it true...

I wanted to create a building like a training camp, where you have to fight every creature in the game from peasant to azure dragon.
Each time you enter the building you have to accept the fight or decline it.
The first one would be against 30 peasants for example, the next one against 31 pixies, the next one agaisnt 32 imps... and so on.
You could be rewarded each time you have fought an entire level of monsters.

That is not really a quest but it can be easily linked to other stuff like that : the mayor of the village doesn't want to talk to you unless you have beaten the level 1 monsters in the training camp.

Thank you for getting in.

Having to complete 196 fights seems to me a bit exaggerated.
Also beating all the low level creatures before going to next level is boring.

But can be converted to something more appropriate, like beating all the dragons types, all the commanders and linked to hero's stats/experience. I will think about.

I have many ideas but prefer to leaving them for my own.

Here's one thing though, about I was thinking long and it could been very useful. (And I'm not aware of anyone realizing it before, still it could been.)

It's from diplowars. For first moment here are assigned territores and even if someone break it, it wouldn't be able to attack or regain (defined) structures on the other territory.

That would work for sixty days, after that the war would be declared and fights would begun.

Also here's another possibility to defeat allienated AI enemies, which would not share theirs view and would be forced to fight "independently"

Sounds easy?

Till some point, I doubt that AI will ever understand it.

Every change in AI behavior must be carefully considered. But those changes could be scripted. It is easy to prohibit AI entering an area after a flag was set to true. Just use teleport back when he reach a specified point. the problem is that AI will not understand he can't go there and will keep trying all the game, as he does actually when you disable a teleporter, he keeps going on it each turn because he was hard coded to do this.

I did this topic because I am working on a scenario where Gorgo, Spartan queen, must fulfill more than 80 customized quests to help her husband, King Leonidas, which is fighting the Persians on the other level.

So, it is not about scripting just for amusement, but actually if your ideas are feasible and interesting, they will be introduced in the map ASAP.

So far, Vlaad ideas are available as quests and functional.

Berenike, Aretras's wife was kidnapped by mages practicing dark magic. They cursed her and her husband is afraid to let her comeback.

After visiting fountain of youth, the curse is removed and the lady is again hot:

Please don't be shy: share your ideas if they can do great quests. Then you will play them and your name will be specified for each quest you gave the idea. It is unlike that anyone else will still make a RPG WoG map at this point.

How about a classical mission?
Such as

Rescue the princess from the tower
A Prince has witnessed the kidnapping of the princess and he needs to pay 10000 gold and 20 gems to get her back. If you take the quests you can do ONE of the following:
- pay the rantsom and get the princess back to the prince
- try to attack the kidnappers, and risk the killing of the princess
- disguise yourself as a kidnapper and infiltrate their organisation, then disguise the princess as the same, and walk away
- make the guards drunk and get the princess out that way

How about it?

It is very good!

What I will take from it:
A character was made prisoner.
You pay the ransom, OR:

1)Attack kidnappers
2)make the guards drunk (actually there is a wine market in my map which sells bottles of wine, so your idea is hitting the perfection)and get the princess away

I can't script disguise because all THE AI heroes are already used, and it works only with heroes, not with creatures.

Idea will be scripted. Thank you

The idea isn't new, but I thought of a quest, which demands to create/transform another creature by crossing two races (example Alamar's gorynyches by crossing hydras/black dragons).

I did a similar quest in the H4-Map "Das Auge des Osiris" (The eye of Osiris): A hero had to collect a unicorn and a nightmare for a necromancer (in a quest hut), who crosses the two creatures diving both together into a "breeding pool" and after a time (a night till a week) a black horse raises out of the pool, a goblin / gnoll / imp /  dwarf... is "smelted" with the back of the steed - a "new" creature is born: the dark champion/black knight. This new creature has to be brought to Gorgo or someone else to fulfil the quest.

Another possibility: crossing unicorns with gorgons to nightmares (why not let the "gorgons" play a role in a quest, if Gorgo the queen is involved?)

Thanks Koni,

The idea is not bad at all, but still I am thinking how to get it difficult.

As you present it, all she needs is to visit the necromancer 2 times, and then she gets the creature. Way too easy. Need some fine tuning.

Maybe she could be told before the quest that the necromancer needs a
horse crossed between a creature of the marshes and a knight of the realm of the dead. Then give her a pool to choose from various creatures. If she choose wrong, no creature will be born.

But still seems me to easy, because the ERM allows only choosing between 16 creatures (the max of a radio box) so it will be easy to mix up.

The classic fantasy quest goes something like this.  Something happens to cause a weak/frail or otherwise innept person to have to go on an adventure.  Crops mysteriously dying, attack by trolls, cursed by (insert witch, wizard, or other diabolical being).  They have to find an item, rescue somebody, get betrayed, then somehow pull off a miracle.  However, I would like something a bit different.

While two well trained heroes (any two you would like) come accross a chest in the middle of a road.  Of course they are suspicious, but they investigate (cautiously).  Doesn't matter though, about half an acre has been prepaired, so when the trap is sprung there is no escape.  The entire area collapses, trapping them underground.  Injured and without supplies, they have to find a town in the underground catacombs before they parish.  Hunted, alone (except for each other), and injured they have to not only survive but find out who ambushed them but why.  Should be some political rival, who is setting up an coup de tat for the kingdom they serve.  So they are racing against a clock to save the king (or similar).

Demon Slayer
You walk into a gypsy's tent, and she predicts that you are fighting a vicious demon called Herkroth. As she explains, the demon can only be harmed with a certain sword, since that artifact only can break through the demon's magical defenses.
The artifact is hidden behind a few border guards.

How about it?
Yes, the story is a slightly adapted version from a RuneScape quest.

Here are some quests wich I planned to use for my Diablo III. map:
(wich will never be completed)

1,
You have to use a one-way teleport with your quest hero to go for a quest artifact, and there is no way to come out. Actually, the only way is to fight the guardians of the artifact, and then start a fight against a single 100HP peasant wich guards the grail, and LOSE.
You may place a sign near to the teleport saying something about the importance of being humble against weak ordinary people, to be honest and to follow the Samurai codex.
I guess you will have a town or external tavern on the map to rehire hero.
Another interesting aspect is that You will loose all of your creatures by loosing the second fight. So You have to choose carefully, how many You need for the first battle. The rest can wait for you outside. (placed in mine)

2, Place a border gate on the map wich will allow to pass You only if You have a quest artifact. (You will need 2..6 external trigger cells to store last visitor hero id in PO number, and a central trigger cell to store artifact number and teleport back hero to last visited external position, if it doesn't have the artifact.)
That's what I call a quest gate.
You may or may not take away the artifact. If You take it away and the hero has to return after completing another quest, then you can add a second quest to have a new copy of the artifact. (don't forget to disable rehiring of this hero at this point, and tell it to the player)
You may also check hero id, name, xp, or level etc.
In this case You may have to complete a quest wich gives You a new name, before You can enter. The holy guardians of the temple will surely give You a new, sacred name if You help them by completing a quest.

A lot of new ideas here.

@Mytical: Thank you for input, but it looks more like a scenario idea than a quest, as it implies from fights to political decisions, and then to ultimate task, find who is willing to kill the king. That could be used to create a whole new scenario.

@Ayreon : I still stick to your first idea, as the later one is too easy and predictable. And already used quests where a monster can be killed only if certain conditions were achieved.

@Doom:

1)unfortunately there is no tavern/any town in the new map. Well, could be done with a dummy tavern, but I still don't understand very well your first idea, why have to lose?

2)Gate quest: interesting, but already done in several maps, as Chaser, the Dragon slaughter. And today I just found how to rename the secondary skills, so I will create quests where my hero will get ranks in different guilds. The ranks will appear as new secondary skills and will be required to unlock gates/quests:

Order of life

ranks:

Associate: get +5defense
Apprentice: get +5 attack
Journeyman: get +5 damage
Protector: Get HPx2 for
Defender: Get Speed x2&+5 knowledge
Guardian: Get earth exp + slow&+5 knowledge
Life Master : destroy undead + 10 spell power

Order of death:

ranks:

Murderer : get +5 defense
Bloodletter: get +5 attack
Journeyman: get +5 damage
Eliminator: get death ripple
Conjurer : get fire expert & inferno
Silencer : get +10 knowledge
Death master: get pendant of life (immunity)+10 spell power

it is like your idea to change name, but a bit different.

Thanks to all for ideas, and do not get mad at me for refusing some. Only eliminating some we can find really inspiring quests, as were Vlaad's ones and first of Ayeron. I think the most inspiring quests are the ones which are not exclusively battle related, but a mixture of RPG/battle/puzzle/fantasy.

Examples of a few quests already done, as this may help you to see for what I am looking:

1)Philomena is a lone and beautiful woman who has a splendid garden. All her time she spends on taking care about her flowers. (hint added in the Papyrus quest---> Philomena loves flowers)

Sostratos is an ugly, bald and toothless man. But his heart is lighted every time he cross Philomena glance. He asks you to go and persuade Philomena to speak to him. it turns that Philomena would indeed speak to him, but only if a charming messenger is send. The main character must acquire "charm" ability before Philomena dare to even look at him. After acquiring "charm" You speak again to Philomena and she agrees to speak to Sostratos. But the discussion goes wrong because Sostratos is not only ugly but also picky about his money, therefore he did not bring any present to the meeting, and Philomena is shocked.

Sostratos is asking you to find something to please Philomena. The main character has to look all around, search every bush and finally he founds some beautiful flowers ready to be picked up.

He goes back to Philomena and give her the flowers saying they come from Sostratos. Now and only now Philomena agrees to meet Sostratos and hear his lovely words.

2) Prisoners revolted because the prison food is bad quality (they are all out and roaming around, set to aggressive level and impossible to beat). The prison keeper sends you to find why the food suddenly lost the quality. You have to find the farm where this food is collected and ask the farmer why the quality dropped.
He tells you that the dogs he used to protect the domestic animals died of illness and asks you to visit another farm and collect for him some wild dogs. It turns that at the other farm, the dogs escaped and are running in some forest, so you have to collect them one by one. As they are set to level 2 of agressivity only diplomacy expert can help you to collect them. So here is opening a subquest where you have to acquire diplomacy before joining the dogs.
Back to the farm, the farmer rewards you by giving you the so much waited high quality food.
You return to the prison, put the food in the right place and the prisoners are set to 0 agressivity. You join them all and put them back into the prison.

3). Leonatos, a high priest is looking for Herakles famous tunic. He wants it because when analyzing it he could take away the poison used by Dreiadera and use it for creating an elixire of life.

The hero is given a scrap map (as the one when you visited an obelisk) and everytime you equip this map, you have a look at the location of the Herakles tomb. But the map is incomplete, so all you get is a covered map.
To unlock more and more details, you have to visit various guilds, characters, and get more maps (by completing other quests), which being added to the first one, will unlock the X where you have to dig. When you got the 4th scrap of map, you can see the X, therefore you have to find the location and dig for it.

Once the tunic was found, you visit again Leonatos and get your reward.

Thats how the first map is looking when quest is starting:

Thats how the map is looking when all subquest are done:

Don't you think it would be possible to change the class system to a more RPG one ?
I mean, you gain xp, you have an unique way to level up according to your class. This would give you specific secondary skills, but also specific spells, unique artefact prequisites (wizards can't wear armors), and even unique creatures sets...
Maybe it would screw up your concept.

I don't have time to read what others have said, so if someone have already said, I 'm sorry...

The idea is to have many "crossroads" where the hero will be able to choose to either do the "good" or the "bad" thing...thus the same being "good" or "bad" and he may be able to hire creatures that are only "good"(castle, rampart, tower) or only "bad"(inferno, dungeon, necropolis)...and maybe if it can be done to change the "style" of the hero...
e.g.:really good=castle hero
    very good=rampart hero
    good=tower hero
    neutral=conflux/stronghold/fortress hero
    bad=dungeon
    very bad=inferno
    really bad=necropolis

Thank you but I was faster on this idea.

The hero is allowed to choose between Order of Death (evil) and Order of Life (good) and being in one disable the other. Each one has its advantages and inconvenient. As getting special creatures, special spells and skills, various bonuses.
Examplesorry for misspelling, was only for test)
