WoG and T.E.
I've always played HoMM3 with AB and SoD installed, and I'm looking into perhaps installing WoG or TE. I've read abit about the new things in each so I'd like some opinions. Is WoG worth installing? Or TE? Do you use, would you go back to vanilla HoMM now?

Quote: Is WoG worth installing?
Certainly yes. WoG lets you do anything. Ok, some of it may seem weird, but the nice thing is that you can enable and disable anything you want, so if there's something you don't like, you can easily play without it.
Quote: Do you use, would you go back to vanilla HoMM now?
No, I wouldn't, because you can just disable every WoG-option, and then you have vanilla HoMM

word to the wise, make a backup of your game before you install WOG, its pretty unstable, T.E. too due to it being built on WOG.
I very much enjoy Tournament edition, but its nigh unplayable as it crashes at least every 2-3weeks, not a huge deal single player or hot-seat, but over the net its a royal pain.

Just a reminder here. If you use (or plan to use) Mac/BootCamp combination, check this out. MACs are unstable even in the vanilla version of the game. For this reason I have not really attempted even installing TE in this machine. Just plain HOMM 4.0 might crash 2-3 times within a week (sometimes even within my same turn ... - sucks totally). Of course, there are weeks that it doesn't crash, but on average I would say that it crashes 2-3 times per game (which ends late 1st month at most). So yeah, forget about Wog or TE in these machines. It will be a pain both for you and your opponents / allies.
Just letting you know.

TE is stable both in singleplayer and multiplayer games. Else people would not play it If someone has problems - that means that something is wrong with his PC or his game settings.

I am referring to TE as I tested it 2 years ago and no that version was not stable SAG. I don't know about newer ones.
As of Mac's again what I say holds. Just find a friend of yours with a mac and play some games in a local network (I am not referring to town bug ...) Pure vanilla homm3 and it just doesn't work as in a regular pc.

Don't spoil your self with WoG - stick to T.E. - wog is... childish and is not Heroes, feels like a different game - more like - Commanders of Might not Magic : )
just my humble opinion of'corpse..

Don't listen to him. WoG is the future of HoMM3. Commanders are optional, as all the other scripts. Remove what you dislike and play a better game.

@dimis: I don't know about any instability of TE. Version wasn't changed during last 2 years. What kind of problem do you have? Do you use recommended settings as mentioned IN QUESTION #8. Have you tried random map or fixed map?

I was devoted SOD player. And as such, i hate WOG and still hate it.
But TE is something different. TE is highly upgraded SOD. Without the game bugs, the weakness of some towns, Its much more interesting and there is some very, very, very usefull tools, that speeds up the game in regards to the real time spend.
So - for more than a year i play ONLY TE. And yes - SOD looks like just plain vanilla. I would never return to pure SOD.
And Dimis - i have probably more than 200 online games on TE. I dont remember single bug. In Bulgaria there are also several other active TE players - no report of bugs either.

I'm inclined to agree with you lio, not about the T.E. as I have yet to dl it, but on WoG. It seems too sparkly/flashy for taste and the myriad of options don't help a bit when trying to decide which you can and which you shouldn't turn off for balance and fun reasons. I'm gonna dl T.E. after I finish this post and give it a go

I have changed my opinion about WoG completely to be honest.
Why?
Imagine:
You have a solid car, let's say a VW Golf (H3 SOD).
But in this car, you have many switches/buttons. With every button you press, you can change your car. Be it just the color, or the horsepower, or make it a convertible, a coupé, or change it completely into a different car, let's say a Mercedes SL.
BUT, only if you press those needed specific buttons. If you want your VW Golf back (or nothing to be changed at all), just leave those buttons alone or bring them back to origin status.
Wouldn't that be a great car?
EXACTLY this is what WoG is for Heroes 3!

Absolutely. If you miss something in SOD, you can have it in WoG. If you don't, then you can still play WoG, but with options disabled.
WoG does not force you to follow its will, but serves yours.
Just to point a few WoG options I can't play without:
**rereadable signs : you can read the signs you visited without having to visit them again
**buy all creatures when in town : one click and all army is yours
**custom events that you can enable again, disable, and re enable again, as long as you wish: more enthralling atmosphere
**changing alliances : realistic
**bring heros into map from the pool : unlimited replayability
**custom skills for each hero : more personality for each one, and endless options
**removed week of plague : not that bothered me much, but if the week creatures are wrong placed, it may screw your map
**change the names and the order of towns : very useful on maps where you have 50 towns.
**change the bio and the portrait of an hero regardless what he accomplished
** display movement points
**the possibility to adapt the neutral monsters to your army total health: no need anymore to test hundred hours to see if that stack will be challenging if you reach it month 12 or month 1 as well. It will simply match the values you desire, any day.

OK. Thats True. But what if the colours are all sh*ty - pink, or some nasty paintings. What if the HP are all less than your orriginal, if it doesnt switch to coupe, but to tractor. And it does change into a completely new car, but its not Mercedes SL, but ford fiesta...
I agree with you, that its great to have the options. The important thing is these options to worth something.
On TE most of the changes are optional aswell, but they are far more interesting than those in WOG. Actually - all the good stuff from WOG is present in TE. So in a way TE is upgrade to WOG, but with the idea to be closer to SOD.

Liophy, you just have no idea what is WoG. No offense.
TE was prepared for you with selected options by WoG accustomed people.
The same thing was done in WoG, by accustomed people also. Play a good WoG custom map and you will see how it works really. As I said, WoG offers anything, to anyone. You dont like the colors, change them. You don't like the speed, change it. TE used exactly the same options WoG offers. But only selected them regardless top players tastes. WoG can do it as well.

I sounded pretty unenthusiastic in my last message. Wog is a lot of fun, I usally play with 10 skills (2 hidden) as well as heroes start at level 5.
Tournament edition is awesome, no more dialogue boxes for most of the useless stuff... +1 attack click, +1 defense click, thats all gone, you get a little sound effect and its over now.
I play on Vista, and we have the crashing problem on 3 seperate computers, running off the Complete CD (US ver) running off a downloaded torrent and running off the SOD CD. they all cause crashes, possibly its a Vista problem, but I get ERM script errors regularly when I enter my castle and I haven't been able to find a solution in the last year so I only play it single player which sucks.
Vanilla H3 V4 never crashes.
Try the game out, but make a backup of your files, or I guess you could just reinstall after if it doesnt work, I have 3 versions of the game on my PC... Complete, Complete+WOG and Complete+WOG+TE right now.
