OpenHoMM
OpenHoMM is open source clone of 'Heroes Of Might And Magic III' engine.
We released Preview #1
http://slil.ru/27458510
At present works as a mapviewer and supports only SoD maps.
Unpack archive to your HoMM III SoD directory.
By default loading "A Viking We Shall Go" map. To load a different map, pass the filename as an argument in the command line.
Quote: openhomm.exe "maps\A Warm and Familiar Place.h3m"

Not the same. VCMI is rewriting WoG engine, we are rewriting SoD engine with some new features. And we do it in different ways.
Preview.2 still in development stage. We need to realize too much stuff.
You can download an updated preview.1 (fixed some bugs in map loader)
http://launchpad.net/openhomm/1.0/preview.1/+download/openhomm-preview-1-bin-win32.tar.bz2
Or you can build it from sources

So this won't have the same visuals as WoG? Some of the creatures in WoG (and the environment on several maps) i find rather wierd-looking compared to any other unit in the "vanilla" versions. Probably the colors and unrefined eyes from my side, but still *I am 100% snow in programming and modding*

Yes, we don't plan to add graphic or something. We only recreating game engine. At the moment the team consists only of 3 programmers.
Third programmers joined some days ago.
But we want to add easy modding feature.
Some goals for preview.2:
- GUI with scripting (you can rewrite all standards action)
- basic game logic
- console
- RoE & AB maps support
- crash report system
- debugger for scripts
- rewrite some code from scratch, because it's terrible
- maybe, begin work on tools.
- add some documentation
That's what we've added after the preview.1:
- added menu for window mode
- added configuration file (ony 3 options)
- fixed compilation on gcc 4.3 and linux
- improved render speed
- some stablity fixes
Too much work, but we will finish it!

...How many years after VCMI is finished?
Maybe you could help with our project instead or writting the same once again. Actually scripting is something we miss at the moment.

Why years? You do not need to be so pessimistic
I think, we won't join. There are some reasons for that.

What about the AI? Other elements can be copied easily but that might be hard. Even better, though, would be the possibility to create a more competent AI as an option.

I thought about this.
We try to make it better than it was in the original. Some fragments of AI will be available from the scripts, like in "The Battle for Wesnoth"

While 2 towns being banned, open maps being ignored, magic heros being useless, 66 spells out from 69 never being used, tactics being considered cheap (hit&run, red rush, town sitting), over usage of some 4-5 heros out from 155, 4-5 secondary skills only used out from 27, yes, it is the best

VCMI already supports maps of any sizes. Not sure about rectangular ones.
Unfortunatelly right now we don't have any tools to make such map, editor and RMG will come only after 1.0 release.
BTW, I just joined the team. Hopefully I won't slow down the project too much .

There is already a russian patch allowing to make bigger maps. But you can't view the additional terrain on the minimap unfortunatelly.
Any knows which part of the code allows changing the editor to support twice bigger maps? Is any of the projects working on such a tool?
