I gave up on using emoticons
And I'm dead serious.
I'm sick of e-style of expressing emotions. People got so used to it, they no longer put effort into their writing and are expressing their emotion by those stupid  and  .
I mean, take them away and like 90% people will not get your intent. You almost can't be sarcastic on a random forum nowadays without that dumb because nobody will understand you anyway. Without the emoticon, they will treat you dead serious.
I'm up for the challenge. No more stupid smilies for me, unless it's necessary or I feel like using it.
Oh, and by the way, what do you think about modern communication? I think it sucks balls. Not only people use more and more stupid shortcuts, but the culture got so dependant on SMSes and things like MSN, they can't even chat properly. They are throwing one liners EVERYWHERE, a complex sentence is like impossible! Especially annoying when you're chatting with a girl you like and she throws one liners, smilies and all, feels like talking to a damn wall. Or a retard. Where's the conversation, is it THAT hard to type those letters, glue the words together into something more meaningful than "sup dude" "lol" "" and so on?
I personally hate it. Meeting girls on internet generally sucks, but it sucks even more that you can't even get to know the person, because she's so lazy she goes with those DAMN ONE LINER SMILEY BS ALL THE DAMN TIME!!!
Argh, I'm angry.

Yup, I agree about the "Shortcuts" and for this reason I never do it myself, unless I'm joking (such as also when I'm joking with 1337 speech, obviously I'm not serious). I think "modern text communication" is a bit different than in RL, sometimes good sometimes bad. It depends. People are more open on the internet, that's a good thing, because it's more important to speak your mind than to mask it with "formality" or not speaking at all. At least this way people will get to know you better.
I also hate "lol" and one liner responses that are too often that they forget what the meaning of that was: to express laugh-out-loud emotion. What's the point to say "lol" almost everytime especially if you are not laughing so hard or find it too funny? (not necessarily laugh it loud physically, you can just find something extremely funny and just in your mind, if you are shy ).

I do not like to talk with certain peple over the internet, because it's easy to misinterpret words...

The thing is, online communication is convenient but doesn't transfer sarcasm very well. (Although sometimes people have a hard time detecting when I'm being sarcastic in RL.) So is necessary.

Amen! Just look at peoples reactions here on HC when you're being sarcastic. 90% do REALLY don't get that you're joking. wtf?

To make it worse, even when you use the smiley, it doesn't guarantee they will get the sarcasm!
Well, HC is a rather intelligent place. There are forums where people are so dumb no amount of emoticons can make them understand even the most basic irony.

well smileys are a bit dumb granted but people are to dependent on them now.
Comparations
 - its an easy way to get your point across even if it has a terrible accuracy deficiency. You expect people to use it
*Chokes on his beer and starts laughing*- this is ok and you have allot more freedom than the smiley bar but you expect this more in role play not texting. People will just think your weird then(or that you got something wrong in the head)

I hardly ever use the things anyway. Usually I forget that they're there because I've never had much of an interest in using them at all. Even if I do use them though, there's usually only around four or five that I choose from.
I recall, back on Celestial Heavens, playing hangman, I never used any smileys when hanging anyone. Someone pointed that out to me. I thought it was a little funny that they noticed. I didn't mind doing so for a while afterward, but I eventually forgot once again. (One of the ones I use most often, if I remember.)

I personally banned myself from using the smily since it was so damn overused! Especially in sarcasm...
I hate . Let's make next week No--week... (and watch the chaos unfold!)
Oh, and I rarely say lol, I say Haha instead.

I agree, I never used them when I joined either, but now I put one into most posts. In RL you have facial expressions to add flavour to conversations, but on a forum it's just words. How bland.
I don't depend on them since this is an English-speaking place and I'm a native English speaker, so I can easily get my point across with words if I need to, but I respect that they're necessary for some people.
Tell you what, I'll stop using them too for a while, and let's have a no- week. If TheDeath survives he gets a QP.

That's exactly why smileys 'help' a bit, since a plain text can't express feelings that properly. Sure some people overuse smileys to make 'shortcuts' but I don't think they were made for that in the first place.
