Quote: Why hasn't anyone suggested twilight? It'll help you score some chicks, unlike these others
Or you can just learn to play guitar and go back to reading stuff that isn't hysterically gay.
@MVass
Mkay. Tastes differ.
You have redeemed yourself by putting the Hitchhiker's Guide and Discworld on the list ^^

Less than you'd think actually 'Tleast for the basics, and a few simple chords are more than enough to get your message across to an average girl (or at least a Twilight reader ).
@MVass
You have redeemed yourself twice.
In fact, just enough to receive a...
+1 WALRUS POINT!
Which I'll probably take away from you when I get the chance. ^^ But still.

The Outsiders - S. E. Hinton
Can't imagine why you think that, honestly. It's not a favourite, but you'd class it among the worst books ever?

More like Diabeetus Point, m i rite?
Cepheus:
Not only is the writing and plot not that good, but it also presents an absolutely wrong moral message: "have loser friends and never get anywhere, even if you have the chance to!"

I don't really believe that was the point it tried to get across.
Well, if you don't like The Outsiders, think twice about Catcher in the Rye.

I will suggest the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. It can be a bit..dark and has some questionable things in it, but it is very good. There are a few of them, so keep that in mind. Examples : One Tree, Illearth Stone..
The Magical Kingdom of Landover Series is good also. Example : Magic Kingdom for Sale...SOLD.
Xanth Books (but they are a bit unusual ): Example : Harpy Thyme
The Phase/Proton Books. Example : Out of Phase.
Test of the Twins, Trial of the Twins...or some of the Dragonlance Books.
Anne McCaffey (spelling?) The Dragonriders of Pern (or just about any of the Pern books, though they are hit or miss).
Man..I've read a LOT of fantasy books..now if I could only remember all of the titles...

As far as nonfiction sirious books go, these three are my summer list:
Machiavelli's, The Prince
Chalmers Johnson's, Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire
Ron Paul's, The Revolution: A Manifesto
The first two books could appeal to anybody. I'm not entirely sure how relevant the 3rd book would be if you're not a U.S.'er.

For a guy like Mvass I would recommend Tom Clancy's books
for addictive readind I'd recommend J. Clavell's "Shogun". A colossal novel, perfectly depicting feudal Japan.

So I'm currently reading "Thus Spoke Zarathustra".
W
T
F
"I love the forest. It is bad to live in cities: there too many are in heat. Is it not better to fall into the hands of a murderer than into the dreams of a woman in heat?"
"Woman is not yet capable of friendship: women are still cats and birds. Or at best, cows."
"Everything about woman is a riddle, and everything about woman has one solution: that is pregnancy."
"One day Zarathustra had fallen asleep under a fig-tree, owing to the heat, with his arm over his face. And there came an adder and bit him in the neck, so that Zarathustra cried with pain. When he had taken his arm from his face he looked at the serpent; and then it recognized the eyes of Zarathustra, wriggled awkwardly, and tried to get away. 'Do not go,' said Zarathustra, 'as yet have you not received my thanks! you have awakened me in time; my journey is yet long.' 'Your journey is short," said the adder sadly; "my poison is fatal.' Zarathustra smiled. 'When ever did a dragon die of a serpent's poison?'- he said. 'But take your poison back! you are not rich enough to give it to me.' Then the adder fell again on his neck, and licked his wound."
I guess the last quotation answers the eternal question of "can you suck out the poison of a snake?"

He's kinda right you know.
Oh and stop whining, it's "a book for all and none". You're neither all nor none, of course you ain't gonna like it.

EDIT: first suggestion was already in list, sorry, did not see...
I'd also say that perhaps the company or devices and desires by K.J. Parker may peak your interest. It's dark (as in people do die and no one is exceptionally cheery and don't you even dare expect a happy end!) fantasy, it's low fantasy and the individuals are all rather interesting in the way they think. Though, you have to forgive its slow pacing in order to enjoy it.
At the mountains of madness by H.P. lovecraft is his second-biggest he ever wrote and consists of about 100 pages, more or less (though, nowadays you'll probably only find an omnibus or something)...
Again, I recommend to read the start of the cthulu-mythos, since it's a fast way to learn more about different types of writing. It's pacing is horribly slow and his books were only published after his death. Though, when he lived it were the days of expressionism and he died in 1940 and was published much later, so... You can draw your own conclusions on that
