Euro
I guess you know that 12 European countries are now using the euro.
What do you think about the change? Will it be worth it? I would like to hear everybody, but specially the ones who now have to fit themselves to use euro (I'm sure we have some here).
I know two reasons for England not wanting to go euro:
1)Their pound is bigger than the US dollar, why should they go for the Euro, which is much lower?
2)This one I saw in the news. The police is worrying because in one suitcase (or something like that) you can put:
1 million US dollars
300000 pounds (0.5 millions US dollars)
The amount of euros that worth more than one million US dollars (can't remember exactly how many, but difinately more than 3 )

I believe both arguments for bot having Euro sucks, but the tradition of the GBP is a better argument. The same goes for the confusion of people when trying to calculate between GBP and Euro. I guesss most people in the other 12 countries will calculate to their "old" currency for many years even if the currency does not exist any longer.
BTW: I`m from a non-EU country, so Euro is no posibility for me :-)

I live in a euro-country, belgium to be exact. I don't have any problems by using the euro, and you shouldn't keep on thinking in your old currency. I think by next year that I'll be totally adapted to it.
About UK, the main reason for them not wanting the euro is their huge attachment to traditions (like egg-rolling, once a year they just roll an egg down a hill for tradition... uhum...fun). However it's quite stupid for them not to join now, because of the high pound, if they join now, they will have almost twice the amount of money. The pound will probably stop increasing and start dropping again, so for them, now is the time.

I also live in a euro country (Germany). I don't think that it will take long till we adapt to the new currency. Maybe a few months.
Well, I'm quite sure that GB's main reason for not joining is the fact that the Pound is a strong currency, while the Euro is not (just look at the Euro / $ relation over the past year). This is due to the weaker economy of some euro countries (including those who will join in the near future), compared to the British economy.

Well, watching the show from the distance (non-Euro Denmark) another good argument for not joining the Euro comes to mind...
What happens to the currency when Germany goes +3% in deficit on their national budget due to imployment problems? (Germany got a heavy billing system installed to prevent irresponsible countries from spending to much money and that way jeopardizing with the reliability of the Euro.)
What happens if Berlusconi actually puts his money where his mouth is...
And by the way - the Euro is a great project... politically!

I'm in the uk and the reaction to the Euro has been quite interesting. Quite a few things are available to be bought in the uk using Euros and one of the anti-Euro tabloid newspapers decided that a suitable headline was the Great Euro Rip Off Begins, they then went on to say how much their paper cost in Euros. Ah well...

Well I don't live in an euro country. Though our currency is bound to the Euro (so it is almost the same).
But we had a money change a couple of years ago.
Nothing will change. You will get to the new calculations pretty quick, and you will forget how looked the old money.
The one thing is for sure. It is done some stealing from people's savings while you change the money. This is done on purpose because the new exchange rate is always overesteemated.
So that is why you think that the new prices are high. In fact they didn't convert your money right. There will be a salary correction very soon so the prices will become the same again, but our savings will be charged.
This is a way for the government to finance the change, and also to take more money from the people who have more and not so much money from the people that have little savings.

Euro is uglyer compared to the good old portuguese Escudo, but well, what can we do. It is shock to in one day have 100000 escudos in your account and the next day have 500 euros, I know it is the same but it is a shock.
