Battle Realms
Anyone still playing this? Or at least played it?
I rediscovered it some time ago and started playing with some pals over Hamachi. Pretty fun. Similar to Warcraft III, just oriental and made before it (to cut down Xerox before he says anything).
And I recon, you guys are playing Master of Orion, so it's not like you care about how old a game is.
(I remember falling in love with the game just looking at it's cover, back when I was 12 or so)
EDIT
(Goddamnit I put "it's" instead of "its" and have now officially become one of those badder grammer people I always laugh at)

It's cool...
Too bad I sucked so much at creating good unit diversity that I just ended up spamming samurai/ ronin by the end of the day. The campaigns where also hard as hell
Oh, and I spent way too much money on the initial release...

Never played it, might be interesting. Age of a game means ZERO to me. I still love Final Fantasy I. Will have to look into it.

I remember absolutely loving this game. Couldn't stop playing it... that is until I got stuck and it frustrated me to point I couldn't even look at the shortcut on my desktop.

Where did you get stuck? My bet would be two stages further from the swan's pool

I think it was closer to the end...
I was playing with the good guys (the ones with samurais) and I remember that I had to climb a mountain or something in the middle of the map. The problem was that I was constantly attacked from two sides - by the green brutes from the south and I *think* by the purple whatever they were from the northeast. I could easily hold them off, but I was too afraid to go on a full assault against one of them because the other would come and crush me.

It is two missions past teh swan's pool. Serpentholme was the place and I was stuck there as well...
Funny thing is I got there with the serpent clan (bad guys), because I found teh missions with the dragon clan to be much harder
A friend of mine used guerilla tactics to do it, but I failed at it
Or once I tried to climb that mountain, but afterwards I realised that my base was left undefended... And reaching the mountain didn't do a thing...

Yeah, Serpentholme, that's the one!
So, did you manage to pass it in the end or just crushed your PC like I did?

My picks are Serpent and Lotus. The Lotus are kinda overpowered though, and their units all tend to look, eh, a bit too similar for my taste. Besides, they constantly keep reminding me of the dude who says he is the black wizards. Still, I love to play a good game or two with them. Especially with Zymeth who can cause a map-wide storm which irrigates your rice and peppers enemies with lightnings.
But the Serpent are my favourites. Diverse, fun to play, more or less balanced, with lots of upgrades and different approaches, and that nasty mentality but still an oriental feeling to them. Did some quite awesome things with the Necromancer hero. And those musketeers.
I'm playing the campaign as the Dragon clan but for some reason I don't generally use them in skirmishes too much. They look cool as hell, 'specially the Kabuki or Dragon Warriors. I've only gotten to about the middle of the campaign by now, though, so my PC's still breathing.
The Wolfies are the least fun for me, beats me why. Possibly cause they seem too generic for my taste (stereotypical waagh barbarians). Though there's a lot of fun stuff with them too, such as the guys with large hammers and Arnold accents. Or the anarchy signs they put on their cottages.
The Lotus are the most annoying to play against, methinks.

How come those silly lepers are so strong? All pof them are supposed to be cancerous and sick as hell, yet they can easily stand up to some wolfie mauler. I like the wolf because of the shale lord and the berserkers...
And I like the serpent as well, though I'm never good when wielding the necromancer. And all those special abilities... yeah, I suck at using them

Yeah, I stopped there as well, since I had no idea why my clone army of samurai/ ronin kept losing there.

Ahhh Serpentholm, I remember it now. The mission with that ruined castle on a hill, with Lotus and Wolfies around...
I got it in first (or was it second?) try; what I did is train some kabukis, dragon warriors, samurai, what I had and charge the greens early. Them and the Lotus are fighting each other and I had the luck of arriving at the Wolf base just when the Lotus were attacking them. I killed them both off, so the Lotus had a crippled army and poor Wolfies got defeated. After that, I cleaned out the Lotus base and voila.
Healers did the most important part methinks.
Way harder was the next mission, before Kenji goes to awaken the Dragon. You basically pick between three territories to attack; two Wolf and one Lotus clan's. I picked the Lotus one and had to restart the damn thing four or five times in order to win.
I love special abilities Though there really isn't much philosophy with the Necromancer. You spawn all 3 available spirit warriors, take a bit of additional army and go around beating things, relying on the Necromancer to automatically raise those temporary zombies to keep enemies busy while you rampage through his buildings (he's great in melee). He's also tough as hell, and with a few Geisha you can expect him to outlive anything you may encounter.

It's nothing like warcraft...
Well... Lemme see...
It's an RTS, it has heroes, I guess(though that system is vastly different from wc3), but basebuilding, resource gathering, unit training and combat are very, very different. Grapics-engines are very different as well. While Blizzard embraced it's cartoony ways, BR tried to get as close to realism as possible, by making water shimmer, buildings burnable, fires extinguishable and it's plants regrowable when water is added.
Things like stamina are held into account during combat etc.
