Does anyone know of any basic newbie guide for this game? All the links I find on these forums seems to be broken.
I'm mainly looking for answers on these questions (assuming normal sized maps):
How often is it acceptable to return to your town?
Should you get a secondary hero to bring you reinforcements?
When should you expect "the final battle" to occur?
Is it recommended to ever siege a town (without something like tremor) with an army in it?
Should you focus on getting basic dwellings and economy buildings before you get more fancy stuff? (Faction specific?)

1) As often as you would like to do so.
2) You can. It never hurts to have a secondary hero to find resources or pick up the random artifact. However, I believe there are caravans in H5 (been a really, really long time since I've played it so I could be wrong), so you don't necessarily need a hero.
3) I am not sure what you mean by final battle. Are you talking in a campaign, multiplayer, or scenario? Campaigns and scenarios have objectives that make it fairly clear who you will need to fight to succeed. As to multiplayer, the final battle will be the one where you only have your castle, a hero, and are defending it and vice-versia. Players do have 7 days to try and take a castle over to avoid losing though.
4) Most of the time you will have to seige a town with an army in it. Very rarely will you find a completely abandoned town you can claim. You'll have a catapult to help you tear down the walls. If you upgrade certain skills, the catapult can make short work of the defenses.
5) That depends. Some faction specific bulidings, such as the Dwarf barracks (or whatever it is), can be really useful early on. However, it is generally a good idea to have a few dwellings and some upgrades by the end of the first week.

When playing competitively it is a good idea to limit your town visits to avoid losing lose valuable time Normally the plan is stay close to town during week 1 so that you can get more units and upgrade one or two of them, then visit early week 2 for more units and maybe spells. After that you can keep creeping for a long period.
It is a good idea to hire an extra hero both for the extra army and to have someone pickup mines/resources. Reinforcements are another plus.
Final battle.. depends on the map. If the map is large chances are that you can press for a week 4-5 final battle. If you delay to week 6, 7 or more some factions will get an advantage. When dealing against a good rusher you may find him knocking on your door as early as week 3-4.
Sieging towns is a tricky case, not recommended unless you have a clearly superior army, level advantage or a way to counter dark. He could well start puppeting and frenzying your army and your units would be sitting ducks. Town-sitters are shunned upon but if they want to play rough you can take your time to control all the map and dwellings. Extending the game for another hour or two is plain silly.
For starters it's a good idea to get some units and possibly a mage guild. Week 1 armies typically consist of 2-4 stacks of the first 4 tiers with usually one upgrade. For instance academy is fine with gremlin saboteurs and gargoyles, haven with crossbowmen and peasants(footmen and griffins are not worth wasting early), dungeon with stalkers and furies, inferno with familiars, horned demons, dogs(upgraded would be great but rare due to high cost) and succubi etc. During week 2 it is a good idea to get castle, tier 7 and capitol. This involved taking gold from chests ofc, also possibly skipping some dwellings - Sylvan will often skip treants, academy will skip golems and rakshasas etc.

Go to the thread "guide for new players" it will show you how to get what you need. Post again if you have problems and I will try to help.
You can also play on ubi server if Hamachi is a problem for you.

ubi maps good enought. few have briliant balance, so why i must read ballsnow about it? if someone want check my teory, welcome - take your position, hero... what you want, on my ubi maps, and try win
ubi maps = more fun. why? fast meet = multiplayer game. alone long creep ( if someone use toh maps ) = almost single player)
when i start rmg on all impossible few weeks ago, i want only check again this settings, but i cant play alone minimum 4-5 weeks. boring game. wilgeforts use ubi maps, i use ubi maps,.... but for elvin = we do stupid things
when i say something, i can improve this alwayes almost. then, ubi maps = very good game and lots fun, becuase have balance and fast meet ( very importent if you want play chess in hero, no "moster hunting" only ) grrrrrrrrr

hm, sorry, my english no good,. i must explain. what is balance? when balance gone? importent question. balance gone when if you choose some position or position+race/hero, you must win game. so, if ubi maps no have this error ( i use few without this error ), balance occurs. if someone want check this, New players, ubi map it very good option!!!not all of course, but few in 100%
