Something to Think about!@
Since I couldn't locate RMS's thread L'Académie anymore I will start something similar.
I want to know how you guys think about this quote ....
It is soooooo 'right on the money'that I wanted to share it with you!
"Very few beings really seek knowledge in this world... On the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have already shaped in their own minds - justifications, confirmations, forms of consolation without which they can't go on. To really ask is to open the door to a whirlwind. The answer may annihilate the question and the questioner."

Hmmm... seems like Lestat means that only questions which regard material things will get accurate answers. Spiritual things actually might have correct answers too but more often than not answers depend on the answering person`s judgement of things.
Well, I have a theory of habits and why they are so hard to get rid of. A man who has a habit of scratching his cheek wont think about scratching when he is doing it (except in subconscious). If his wife tells that it is annoying that he scratchs his cheek all the time, man decides to stop his habit. But he has to think so he wouldn`t do it! As the habit is already in subconcius he doesn`t have to spend a single thought about doing it but he has to spend thoughts if he wants to keep himself from doing it. Well, after an year or so, when the man has been battling against his habit all the time, he goes to sleep tired and accidentally scratches his cheek!

Very few beings really seek knowledge in this world.
Disagree
the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have already shaped in their own minds - justifications, confirmations, forms of consolation without which they can't go on.
Hmm, agree to some degree
To really ask is to open the door to a whirlwind.
No, not necessarily
The answer may annihilate the question and the questioner.
It's possible, but it doesn't have to be.

...I will, when I get back home when I develop some kind of response...right now, I'm simply giving people a chance to think about it themselves, without having the oppurtunity to leech off of the thoughts of others first...

…hmm, frankly I’m shocked at how few people here are still willing to contribute to an intellectually motivating debate…well, I’ll take it then that anyone who will reply in the future has already at least read over the quote first and figured out what it means to them…
Well, usually I wouldn’t give any serious thought to something said by some vile creature claming to be a vampire lestat (whatever that is) but since it’s here, here it goes.
My interpretation is that there are only a select few that have ever existed, who really sought to know things. Instead, just about everyone is too lazy and dumb to do anything, except delve into what they are unfamiliar with and what they have no knowledge of, or at times cannot have knowledge of…especially since it was already said that they don’t seek to know anything anyway. Instead of living on the truth of the world, we believe what we want to believe. Humanity makes life what they want to make of it, and finds their own meaning in life. The innate stubbornness of everyone which keeps most people from looking beyond their own beliefs that they have already become accustomed to, to find the reality of the way things are. We should keep it that way, and sit confined in our little corner of the universe. We do not want to find the answer, and we should not have that motivation to do so. If we do, then we will find what we do not want, and then it will destroy our very soul, and our code of beliefs.
…I feel that there should be two steps in this process though…the different interpretations and then the responses. I believe that “ it is better to know some of the questions than all the answers” but this existential question is crazy…if you ask me, if it’s supposed to be philosophical (and even if it wasn’t supposed to be) it bashes the very meaning of the term, process and the experience…

Quote: In short it's all got to do with selective perception!@
Isn't that the way it's always been? Let's take truth for example: my trhuth is different than yours. I see things through my mind and interpret them in my own style. You, on the other hand, see the same things and interpret them differently, and both our interpreteations may be true. In other words, my truth is not necesarilly your truth. For one person, to gain knowledge means to understand the meaning of life. For another it means to know everything there is to know in their field of work. Are any of them wrong? In my opinion,no.
To Thunder:
About the power of habits... I know a short story which i think explaines it very well:
One day, a wolf ate a sheep.
The shepard got his shotgun, went in the forest and shot the wolf.
The next day, another wolf ate a sheep.
The shepard got his shotgun, went in the forest and shot the wolf.
The next day, another wolf ate a sheep.
The shepard got his shotgun, went in the forest and shot the wolf.
The next day, a sheep ate a sheep.
The shepard got his shotgun, went in the forest and shot the wolf.
If that isn't the force f habits, then i don't know what it is...
