There is no competition for mega corporations. Little companies in the same industry just get squashed

Is that why almost all economic growth is by small companies? Just curious.

Often small companies are more innovative (by necessity) and come up with things that keep them out of direct competition with larger ones. Often the best ones get bought by larger companies that have no idea what to do with them eventually...

Small companies have less power, and are generally better than large corps.

Small business is alive and well in the US. Small buisnesses have certain advantages and big businesss have others.

One thing however I think that needs to be done is to intsitute FAIR trade instead of FREE trade. If a country imposes high tarrifs on US good the high tarrifs should be imposed on their goods. If a country uses virtual slave labor then tarrifs should be impossed on their goods to allow US companies to compete. If nike pays virtually nothing for labor in India or whereever and ships the goods back to the US tarrifs should be imposed to allow US based businesses to compete.

That is a fault of both political parties. One party is socialist and wants global redistribution of wealth and the other is pro-big big business and wants to "slave labor" option available to those businesses.

Because they pose no real threat to the mega corporations, or not serious ones.  When they do start to pose a threat, the mega corporations buy them out.  End of threat.  They may let a small company get so big, but only so big.  (OF course then they are no longer small companies...).  A small company really only has two ways to go.  Stay the same or grow bigger.  If they don't then they go out of business.  So of course it is 'easier' to grow a small business then a mega one.  The same growth might be 500% for the small company and only 1% for a mega corporation (or less).

I am not saying that there are not small businesses that can fight against larger ones.  In fact in the town I live in a small video store sent Blockbuster packing.  However, mega corporations can buy in massive bulk giving them steep discounts.  The times the 'little guys' win in a head to head fight is few and far between.

I believe in the free market operating within the US. But it is obvious that if China can use virtual slave labor then a US company can't produce goods as cheaply as China for example. Labor cost is usually the highest cost in most businesses.

The majority of the US manufacturing base has moved across the border or overseas to take advantage of cheap (virtual slave) labor.

Tell me, what is "virtual" slave labour? Either someone is a slave or isn't. There's no such thing as "virtually" as slave. If they're being physically punished if they don't work, then they're slaves. If they're not (which is the case), then what's wrong? Besides, thanks to free trade, the standard of living of many third-world people has increased dramatically.

And what's the difference between someone working for $1 an hour in the US and $1 an hour in China? (Besides the minimum wage law, of course.)

Virtual slave labor is paying the workers virtually nothing. Such countries also typically have few safety laws to protect the workers.

American companies have safety regulations and can't pay their workers at such a low scale and most offer benefits to the workers. A worker (American or otherwise) should not have to live outside the factory in a cardboard shack.

True, the standard of living of others has risen as a result of America exporting jobs. And the standard of living of Americans has dropped.

American companies can't compete with the "virtual" slave labor some other countries use.
