Annoying
For the past 10 days, I cannot activate new accounts, nor can I modify them and do player services/add winloss etc.. Been waiting for the programmer to fix it. So FYI email I got from the programmer:
Rob,
I did a lot of testing on the admin section of the toheroes site and tracked the data access problem down to the use of one particular command. I’m not sure why things had changed but I suspect that it is due to some environmental change to that server. Possibly an update to the operating system or something like that. The technology that was used to create the automation part of the site is pretty old (over 10 years old) and is a problem when trying to resolve an issue like this.
The problem comes in when calling the setSQLText function of an ADO record set. That function is need when dynamically changing a database query based on settings and conditions on a particular page. I was able to change most of the pages in the admin section to avoid using this function. There are a couple of pages where I could not avoid using it and had to leave it in, but I did what I could to minimize the effect. The Players page is one such page. There are times that it gets stuck after selecting a player from the list. In these cases, I found, that you can click the cancel button (once or twice) and the data will come up. I have also found that after the page gets stuck it can be helpful to click over to another page in the admin section and then go back to the Players page. I know this is a pain in the ass but you should be able to clear out the pending players in the mean time.
I am continuing to work with the hosting people to see if the problem can be resolved by some adjustment on the server. It is difficult since we are probably the only site on that server that is using ADO record sets. If we weren’t, others would have complained and the issue would probably been resolved by now. I don’t think the first-line support people are really capable of dealing with such a subtle issue. I will try to get them to move the issue up to a higher level of support.

ask Jinxer, I think he will do it for you
Yes, working on such old platform its almost impossible or at least very very hard, Ves.
The best idea is to start a fresh new site for the greatest land of Heroes - TOH.
Php/mysql platform will do a great job, but this will be only Ves decision; I also believe players from Toh have nothing against, but to enjoy a better eviroment especially when all the medals and prestige points will remain, in the start, only for the active players at least.
There's also many programs that could save the entire site in html format, so the history will stay for eternity, and meantime the work on the new "land" could start. It's just an idea, cose as Ves mentioned, that platform has been worn out enought time now, and renewing it seems to be the best solution.
Not to mention that Ves' manually work will be minimazed ...
Many players here could have good ideas about this I'm preatty sure of this !

If a new automation would be rebuilt from scratch using current servers/software, it would have to be done at an 'end season'... or when a new heroes (6?) would be released. The other problem with starting again is that the great old database of almost a decade of player information & records would be lost. Of course, I would make screenshots of the season like every past season, but its just not the same. So I hope this will be fixed, and we continue like always.
in other news, here's a video someone caught of me and my Bugatti Veyron.

ADO records ... pfff, that's stoneage stuff
Anyhow, you can easily port your database to a newer version regardless of what it's sitting on right now and what will be used in the future. There's ETL tools that'll help you with any kind of combination.
Gimme a buzz if you need a hand with it.

Problem solved finally, from the programmer:
The problem has finally been resolved! It turns out that the hosting people had installed a device in mid July that is supposed to protect against SQL injection attacks. The filter was evidently overly aggressive and killing the database connection when certain types of queries were done. This was causing the page to hang during certain queries.
I’m sorry it took so long to resolve this. It was the type of problem that was very hard to track down. I tried to modify the code in order to work around the problem so you could continue working but this could not be done for a couple of the pages. In particular, the players page had to use the type of queries that were getting stuck. I hope you will be able to catch up with the backlog now. Thanks.
