The Internet: A Blessing or a Curse

Over the past 18 months of my life, I have been without internet in my apartment for approximately 5 of them. 3 this summer, and 2 last year in the early fall. I have come to realize that they have been some of the happiest times of my life.

Granted I think that the internet and the computer are powerful tools that enrich our lives, I also feel that it can be a curse if not kept in check. I'm positive that a majority of the posters who come here think that they aren't addicted to computer related activities.

At the beginning of the summer, I moved into a new apartment and didn't have the money to pay for internet all by myself. The first month or so was horrible. I was forced to put myself out into the real world if I was to enjoy my free time. If I didn't need to do school work online or check email, I would be perfectly happy never using the internet for the rest of my life. Facebook is perhaps the only thing that I might miss, since I like to see the pictures that my friends post online.

How often do you spend time on the computer every day doing non-work related activities?

Less than an hour? 2-3 hours? 4, 5, 6 hours?

Until the past 2 weeks, I had spent nearly all of my summer spending no more than 2 hours, often less than 1 doing non-work related activities on the computer. Most of those were just me procrastinating while I was doing work.

Anyway I just thought I'd give people the challenge give up the computer for a week. I'll throw in something to make it easier. No more than 30 minutes a day to check email or whatever important matters you need to attend.

See if you are still able to enjoy your day. If you find yourself sitting around doing nothing all day, then you are perhaps not addicted to the computer, but very very reliant upon it for your entertainment.

I don't need the challenge to answer that question - I am reliant on the PC for my entertainment. It's an easy and versatile entertainment tool and is especially good for a university student like me who sometimes only has an hour or two of free time a day.

So yeah, I rely on my computer, but I don't see that as much of a problem.

Well I do admit that the internet can claim your life at times & it prevents you from having a real life.
That is why I am not on as much.
I have been over my depression from my X's & started doing other things.
Never forget but in time, pieces are forgotten.

The internet is a good tool to learn things as well as making things easier like buying things etc.
Of course Fraud increased lol.

I think it depends on the person.
Back when I was Williams age, I never was on the Net.
I was busy having the time of my life.
Going out doing many different things.
Good,bad or experimental.

I think it depends.
To me too much internet can hurt you when it comes to things that are more important in your own real life.

Without internet you would become bored and start seeking entertainment in real life.

With internet you don't get bored because it offers you entertainment 24/7.

Haha

Well my broadband only works after 19:00 every day so it keeps me from sitting here all day long I guess (extremly cheap internet, works great though)

Oh and I accept the one-week-off challenge, going on vacation in Turkey next week...

A Curse to Some, but without the Internet, no HC form me, and without Internet, no Lexxan

So, for you it's a double Blessing

(except during exams where it's both a blessing and a curse)

Well, I heard rumor that you are alive, Paradoxal One. If that is true, why wouldn't there be life outside HC, or for another matter, WoW?

I deffinitely find internet very addictive. The funny thing is when I'm away and don't have access, I don't really miss it that much. But when I'm at home and I know it's there, and I just need to open the computer, I seem to turn to it whenever I find myself bored, instead of doing something that might be a bit more constructive in the long run.

I can play my xbox instead of using the computer.
otherwise I can sleep.

something funny is I don't like when my sister or my mother spend hours on the computer, even if I don't plan to use it.
at least, unlike them, I realise I spend quite a lots of time on the pc. my mother spends hours per day playing the same games over and over and she says she is not addicted

@ Alc: Exactly the same for me: When I was in Bulgaria, I didn't even get close to a PC, yet I didn't miss it. I wasted my times by other means.

However, when surfing, I find it very had to stop. When Lex's on a roll,  He'll get to your soul... while using a Ten-Opion Poll!

thinking about that, when I went in england, with all the geeks of my class (school trip, we were a class of students in computer science) no one seemed to miss the computer. probably because it's more exciting to visit new places, than going out of your home and always see the same things.

Kids have it so easy these days lol.
They will never know the fun experience of going out & doing something.
Concerts, getting drunk with your friends,
playing sports etc.

Even breaking the rules is funner then hanging on the net 24/7 lol.
