I remember I wrote 2 fan fictions on french forums. one for homm4 and one for resident evil 4.
they were basically a succession of funny events.
in the homm4 fan fic, I put the emphasis on the bad design of some creatures (like the ghost), or some of their awesome abilities (the minotaur able to block anything, or the barbarian who can slay a bunch of dragons in a single attack )
in the re4 fan fic, I made several references to movies or video games. I think I made fun of the not so scary atmosphere of the game and the limited intelligence of the opponents.
I tried to make my stories easy to read and dynamic, by using dialogs a lot and very few descriptions.
and I have no problem holding a pen
I don't write much, but I draw many layouts for mapmaking.

Pathetic...
Were you referring to us with the bad and shaky handwriting?
If so, then I have to inform you, it is very likely a subconscious cerebellum or spinal cord problem rather than strength. For me I think it's genetic. Because I have no problem lifting things with one hand (not very heavy mind you, but much heavier than my hand!).

There are 100 pages short stories. Maybe I can't tell you something you know for exsample but there are. They are rare but they does exist. It depends on the way it's written.

Damn, I suppose I stand corrected...
I was thinking: the average short story is between ten and forty pages and anything that passes the mark of about seventy pages qualifies more for a novella than anything else. And anything that climbs past hunder and twenty page would be a novel, but I suppose that is pretty arbitrary and that in the end it's a bit silly for me to have said that. Still I find a 100-page short story to be quite big. Maybe just me.

Quote: I have the idea that with some people it comes naturally
Yes, they do. I really belive that there are two types of poets/writers. They first type are born with, they write like God is whispering the words on their ear. The second type are not born with it, but they somehow learn who to do it, but they can never be good as the first type.
Puchkin was from the first type and he is the greatest poet ever, Shakespeare was one of them as well, the bulgarian poets Hristo Botev, Hristo Smirnenski and Peyo Yavorov also were. They are pretty rare.
I was investigating the live of many great autors and there is one point of them, that is always the same, they all have ŕ cataclysm that turned into catalyst. Yordan Yovkov, bulgarian autor, started his greatest works after the dead of his father, Aleko Konstantinov - the greatest bulgarian humorist and publicist did it after the dead of his entire family, Hristo Smirnenski - proletariate poet was very poor and forced to leave his home for ever when he was very young and etc.
Smirnenski died of tuberculosis when he was 24 years old, all his work collected is in 3 pretty huge books, and there are meny work that he never singed or he did but with pseudonim (like 70 are known, but there are more), how he did it for this short time? He was from the first type - genius.

Yes it is, and most of the 100 pages long "short" stories are pretty boring since the autor most likely just get to deep into the conflict (a novella has more of them). I prefer shorter.

It's true that almost every novel at or below 100 pages is typically described as a novella and not a short story. Stephen King's Different Seasons stories are a good example.

I usually write down every more interesting thought or idea, since I can't remember it after a half an hour or so. There are tons of notebooks hanging around my place. Now I started writing a novella, which I think that I turn into a full scale novel.

I don't really know...
My English teacher is convinced that the ones that kept working on their own writing, like some sculpters do or like painters do who make up like twenty or so drafts are superior to the ones that just write like natural. Or maybe it can be both, though I'd doubt it.
Lemme talk about two different dutch writers: Gorter and Elsschot. now, Gorter worked on his book for 3 years and it ended up about 100 pages. What he did was create a very basic story and then put it entirly in the style of romanticism with scanning and eye-rhyme and everything. Now, that could be called a work of art and I definitely know he couldn't have written that as if someone was whispering into his ear, that would've been madness. Now, Elsschot, he wrote a book roughly the same size, but he did it within a week (true, he claimed to have thought about writing it for several years, but only waited til someone recgnised him, before he started writing).
Personally, I wouldn't be able to say what's better. the quality of gorter's workd can be put up objectively: is all the scanning ad rhyming correct? Does it tell a good story that gives the zeitgeist? yes? then it's good.
Now, elsschot's work was arguably very influential for some reason, since it didn't tell much of a story, but it was mostly focused on the style in which it was written. Maybe the talented people push the litterary genre forward while the hard-working writers explore the depths of the urrent genre?

EDIT: I think that no one can define the size in pages, it's the autor that do it. Exsample: The bulgarian writer Elin Pelin is known with his VERY short works, for another great bulgarian writer - Yordan Yovkov, the short stories of Pelin were novelettes. One of the longest works of Elin Pelin is called "Geratsite" and he call it a novel, while for Yovkov its just a short story (since it's like 50 pages long, but conflicts are way to many for a short story, most of the criticts agree that it's a novella).

I started writing a book when I was like eleven, in english because I feel that there's more feeling in english than in swedish. I think I made like 80 pages (A4) so if I printed a pocket it'd have at least 150 pages, but my hard drive had a total crash and I lost everything on it. Now I'm currently working on two books, one quite serius that I only write in when I feel devoted and a bad one where I can write when I just want to write. I'm also working on several wc3 maps and tes 3 and 4 for mods and I paint quite a lot, unfortunatly I don't have a scanner so I can't post them.
My biggest problem with being creative is that I CAN'T work to get things finished, I can only work for fun, unless I have. I.e. it's a school thing. So mostly I start something and work with it until I've done all the fun stuff. One of my wc3 maps are completly finished (ORPG map in epic size), except I have to balance all creeps (BOORING!) which takes forever and add more quests and heroes, which is boring when you've made ten, and now I can't work on it at all.

Oh, thats kinda normal, don't worry, keep trying, soon or later you'll finish something, and finish your unfinished work one day. Since someone here mentioned Stephen King, he released "Blaze" (one of his first novels) in 2007 (or it was 2008, doesn't really matter) and currently he is working on "Under the Dome" (another previously unfinished novel). If you keep trying you'll finish something soon or later.

Hmmm, my writing process?
1) Get an idea
2) Write it down
3) Spell check it and see if I want to do any changes
4) Spell check it again
5) Get someone else to read it/spell check it
6) (optional) Draw some nice pictures to add to the text
7) I am done
it is the same process I have been using to write for over 7 years... well... except that I usually never reach part 7 as I lose intrest and start writing on something else. I usually finnish the stories when I get intrested in it again after starting on countless other works.
Now I must say, I didn't know there were this many potential writes on HC, but then again, there is much that I don't know
Things I have (started) writing includes short stories, novels(unfinished), fanfics, comic books, childbooks, fairytales, articles, biografies and lots of other stuff

Just FYI, where it matters (i.e., submitting to a magazine), a short story usually has to be less than around 8000 words. For instance, to be considered for the Hugo or Nebula Awards for best Sci-Fi Short Story, the absolute limit is like 7500 or something. Anything longer, and you get shuttled into a novelette, novella, or novel categories, which also have strictly defined word limits.
